Namen teh obiskov ni nadziranje, ampak želja, seznaniti člane glavnega odbora z društvenimi uradniki in članstvom in obratno. Pozdravljeni! "Ah, kaj! Kaj pa se ženska razume na službo! Tajnosti ženska že itak ne more molčati. Le nikar ne izbegujte! Vedeti hočem !" "Neskončno mi je žal!" "Saj ne bom štedil s pošteno nagrado." "Gospod, v službi sem in vas svarim, da me ne žalite in me ne skušate podkupiti." In ni čuda! V vsakem tobačnem listu - celo najfinejšem najmilejšem - skriva narava gotove nečistoče, ki so, če niso odstranjene, neprijetne nežnim glasovnicam! ker, vede ali nevede, vsak kadilec ali kadilka vdiha del dima iz cigarete, so Lucky Strike razvile ta slavni znanstveni proces, ki odstranja gotove nečistoče. Luckies so ustvarile ta proces. Edino Luckies ga imajo! ELECTION CAMPAIGN TIGHTENS Monday evening marked the passing of another Comets' monthly meeting- Those of you who were not, there, missed the delicious ice cream and dainty cookies that were served by Miss Stella Noch. We were very surprised to see seven Eastern Star members and one Modern Knight present. It appears like the Eastern Stars are boupd to break all records in .attendance. Plans were discusssed for a combined wiener roast by the Eastern Stars and Comets. Of course, this will take place some time in July, along the lake and on a Saturday night. Arrangements will be completed at the Eastern Stars meeting on Holmes Aye., June 20, so all Comet members are urged to be present. Speaking of meetings, I would like every one of you to attend the Eastern Stars meeting in July. Michael Lah Jr. claims it will be an event you'll not want to miss. Keep July 25 open for this occasion. Some sad news, folks! Eastern Stars lost to Holy Name last Sunday by a score of 10 to 4. We'll be expecting better work from you, boys! One certain member of the Stars seems to blame it all on the umpire. Rumors are that Ed Skull and Bill Koželj were out for a ride Sunday. Don't know who did the driving, but anyway they were hit by a policeman. The results were that they had the chance of seeing the inside of the 15th precinct, but were let go and the damages will be paid by the policeman. Getting off easy, boys! It looks as if Michael Lah Jr. had better stay away from Euclid. He picks up too many nails put th,at way, and the conclusion—a flat tire. Too bad, Mickey, and on the evening of our meeting, too! Frank Marzlikar, leading governor of the State of Eastern Stars, No. 51 SDZ, has increased his lead by signing up two more members. He now has a total of nine votes. This seems to have a wonderful effect on Frank Gregor cic, who has one member to his credit. Frank is doing some real campaigning now, and it is expected that he will be handing the SDZ world a surprize. Stanley Kozel j, a charter member of this lodge, also signed up a new member. He has ambitions and his desire is to be a mayor. Here is wishing him the best of luck. By MARTIN VALETICH JR Symptons of a bleeding heart pn the part of a "big oil man," a mayoral candidate of the city of "Kochmania" in the State of Modern Crusaders, testify once again to Dan Cupid's unerring aim. The fact that the object of this well-known citizen's attentions has reciprocated them with interest rather publicly;* leads us to believe that Cupid has also performed his oft-repeated feat of impaling two hearts with the same piercing barb. A man experienced in the game of love and matrimony, Mr. Francis M. Surtz, seems to think that this affair _has gone a little beyond the stage of temporary infatuation. He says, "When a fellow starts out for a package of cigarettes with a girl, and takes an hour to perform this tremendous task, something must be brewing." This authoratative statement was made at his home on May 21, when he was entertaining the Magic City Juniors from Barberton (mostly girls), who had come to Cleveland for that memorable event, the Modern Crusaders outing, which was held on the following day. To further prove the "oil man" guilty, and the other party an accomplice in the above matter, we present further and more conclusive evidence. When a man sings love ditties with the gang, but has eyes for only one person, who responds by ecstatically snuggling on his shoulder; surely this denotes deep feeling on the part of both persons. This man, at the Modern Crusaders' recent outing, asked if there were any daisies in the vicinity. When he was asked why, he said that he and . . . wanted to "pick petals," suddenly realizing that he was disclosing what he thought a secret, he hurriedly, tried to "cover up" by saying that they both, cpincidentally, had the same hobby, namely Botany, By MARTIN VALETICH JR. Due to a lack of interest and to irresponsible officers of some of the English-conducted SDZ lodges, the attendance fit the Central Committee meetings has been decidedly poor. The secretaries of the various groups were sent notices of meetings, asking them to attend and to urge the president, treasurer and entertainment committee chairman to do so likewise. These were first sent out for the meeting pf April 29, and have been issued every two weeks since that time. Although some response has been elicited it has not been great enough to merit attention. Is it possible that the younger generation of Slovenians is losing its traditional ability to shoulder respensobility, and to carry on the work of past generations? That such lack of co-operation, as has been displayed by certain groups, shpuld exist in any Slpvenian organization is unbelievable, although the evidence is irrefutable. The Central Committee has so much faith in the English-conducted lodges that they are quite positive that certain extenuating circumstances exist, which accounts for their delinquency. For this reaspn we refrain from publishing the names of the truants at this time. Perhaps this organization has been looked upon with some suspicious because of its repeated efforts to arouse interest. Let us explain the purpose of this organization by citing-extracts from the minutes of past meetings. From the minutes of April 15, we find that, "Mr. Surtz stated, that since such a committee might make possible again an SDZ Athletic Association, and since it would be advantageous in the supporting of social functions of the individual lodges, and since it would, without a doubt, assist materially in increasing the membership even when no campaign was in progress, it would be well to have one." From the minutes of April 29, we learn that; "It was decided that an entertainment committee should be appointed Comets' Meeting Lures Eastern Star Bachelors MICHAEL LAH CLOSES IN ON JAMES PERAT fpr the purpp^e of preparing special entertainment which would be presented at the meetings pf the various lodges." From the minutess of May 13, we see: "That the Central Committee hopes eventually to amass a treasury of proportions great enough, so that they may ,be able to offer material aid to any lodge if the necessity should arise." From these statements we can readily see of profit. This organization was also born of a need fpr some method of controlling the dates of social af fairs which so often conflicted and which usually resulted dis-asterously for all lodges concerned. So far the cpmmittee has supported two functions, the Comets' dance on May 14, which was far more successful than any of their past affairs, and the outing of the Modern Crusaders on May 22. At present the Central Committee is attempting to get more space in this paper due to a concerted demand by representatives of various lodges. The next big job will be the support of the dance being given by the Magic City Juniors in Barberton, 0. Tickets for this affair have already been issued. To readers who are members of EngUsh-cOfiducted lodges and who are truly interested in the welfare of their lodge, we make the following request: Bring up this matter before your members at your next regular meeting by citing this article. Make it clear to them how -beneficial it will be for them to become affiliated with the Central Committee. Ask your officers for .reports of the Central Committee's -meetings; if they cannot do so, due to their absence from them, why then, make a demand for them! Remember, it js your inalienable right to do so, and if your demand receives no consideration, then bear this fact in mind at your next election of officers. The Central Committee needs the support of every member and intends to keep after them until that support is tendered, although they feel that this one strong appeal to their sense of duty should suffice. It is quite fortunate for Perat that he did, as the citizens of Eastern Stars state are leaving no stone unturned in their drive to place Michael Lah Jr., at the head of the list. As it is, the gap between these two leaders has once more been cut (More SDZ News Page 4) cpuid compare with the Eastern Star battery. The Pitcher, Rudy Gulic, and Martin Lpkar, catcher, can surely do wonders' with a ball. The first three innings, seemed to be all bad luck fpr the Stars' team, the Hply Name's scored six runs and they had only wanted to ascertain the exact structure of the daisy. (Note his political tendencies, he can think up good excuses in a hurry.) It has been rumored about that this esteemed mayoral candidate has lately taken a deep interest in jewelry and particularly in diamond rings. It has also been rumored that his "Madam X." has been caught in the act of experimenting with monograms. Persons providing this evidence stated that she was trying to decide whether J. R. lopks better pn a pilow slip than her maiden initials, J. M. Strange as it may seem, this young lady pnce claimed that she did not believe there was such a tiling as'lpve. We winder if she* can honestly make that §ame statement now. Oyr conclusipn is that a certain party may be flashing a bit pf jeweiry before long, and down and the Eastern Star leader now stands an excellent opportunity of displacing Perat from the lead he has maintained ever since the campaign ppened. Lah owes his belated spurt to the efforts of Frank Marzlikar, who continues to add new members to the club roster. Marzlikar, the leading gubernatorial candidate in the state, is now second to Mary Milner, Modern Crusaders go-getter, for the honor of bringing the most new members. Third in the presidential race is Helen Petroff, Barberton Magic City Juniors candidate. Late in getting under way, the Barberton miss now looms as one of the strongest candidates. Grdtna Says Had occasion to speak with a traveling representative of one of the world's largest organizations recently. Naturally, the discussion turned to business —or rather the lack of it. Most surprisingly, however, the man, whose travels of the last month and a half have carried him the length and breadth of the nation, was opti mistic, despite the decrease in his own enterprise. "The one encouraging note," he said, "in all this country is the attitude of our farmers. Everywhere the farms are in far better condition than they have been in the past twenty years; everywhere you go you meet with the pleasant sight of growing things. "The answer, of course, is cheap labor. Today we are turning back the hands of time and the trek is not to the cities and bright lights, but back to the farms and the simple things. Men, disappointed with their inability to combat the city, are turning back to the tilled fields where they are at least assured a livelihood—simple as it is. In many instances farm help represents nothing more than these wanderers who ask nothing more than board and keep. And the farmer, on his part, is not looking forward to a profit from his labors, seeking only enough to keep himself going. This is made possible only through the cheap labor available. "They are not making any investments, and very many of them are even going back to horses. Why, I know of one Midwestern farming center where a harness shop has just been opened and is working night and day in order to ■ keep up with the demand for its products!" No, he didn't consider this as a forerunner of prosperity, but he did see where it could do much good toward this end. It at least enabied those drifting back to the farms to get away from the badge of charity, to regain their self-respect by earning their own living, working in the sun and air and digging in the soil, instead of tramping Sunday, July 31, Is Date for Elaborate Affair MERCHANTS HOLD ANNUAL PICNIC AT CONNEAUT PARK Set DANCE AND GOLF FREE ST. Singularly enough, that same day the writer had his attention called to an article appearing in a Wall St. journal, which pointed out the increase in gold mined since boom times have faded. Drifters have taken to Colorado creeks, where it has been found that they are earning from $2 to $4 a day panning gold. Of course, such a return is not fabulous, but when one considers that the cost of living for these men is considerably under $1 per day, we see that their average daily saving is $2—-or $700 a year. How many people living in the cities are able to save that much a year during stress times? Not very many. The article further pointed out that such an increase in gold mining is quite characteristic of all depression periods. And not so much because men are attracted by the lure of gold and easy money, but because they see in it an opportunity of earning their own living. It appears that Frank Yerse, first year golfer, was on a threesome with Charlie and Harry Lausche. Frank was in a trap going into the final hole, and in three strokes could only move the ball a few feet. Whereupon he became disgusted and swung his niblick with his right hand, hitting the ball beautifully. The pellet bounded on the fairway, on to the green and glided right into the cup for a one-handed shot, that Bobby Jones could not probably achieve in a century} He finished the hole in 0, which was indeed a pleasant surprise to himself and his playing fellow-men. KEnmore 2674-M Zagreb, lying in the very heart of the Old World, can boast of being not only the second largest city of Jugoslavia, but can also claim its place as one of the most beautiful and prosperous communities of the thriving young kingdom. With a population of approximately >50,000 inhabitants, Zagreb is mar-velousjy situated geographically and is the point of junction of many important railways, among which is the Sim-plon-Orient Express Line. The city is the capital of Savska Banovina, and has become one of the really great cities of southeastern Europe, offering many attractions to the tourist. The outward appearance of the Jugoslav city is proof of its wealth of art treasures. The clean, neat streets, all asphalted in the center of the city, are the pride of the inhabitants. As soon as the visitor leaves the main station he finds before him a beautiful view of Tomialav Place, where a monument to the first Croatian ruler, King Tomislav, stands. Next to the Municipal Art Gallery, where expositions are held periodically, is the Strossmayer Square, while a little further north lies the Zriny Square. On the Strossmayer Square stands the imposing monument of Bishop Strossmayer, the work of the Jugoslav artist, Mestrovic. On the Zriny Square, with its beautiful shady parks, is the Paiace of the Jugoslav Academy of Science, containing the Archeological Museum and the Strossmayer Art Gallery. Passing by the Jewish synagogue of Moorish style, one arrives on the modern Jelacic Square, which is the very center of the city, with an equestrian statue of Ban Jelacic. One of the most interesting spectacles for the visitor is the vegetable market which is held daily on the square and which is filled with picturesquely costumed peasants from the neighboring villages. North of Jelacic Square, the new Gothic Cathedral stands on the site once occupied by the ancient cathedral, which was ruined by the earthquake of 1880. Here also is the beautiful old Palace of the Archbishops, the greatest part of which was built during the 18th century. The dioceses of Zagreb were formed in 1093. Here, too, is found a large and modern market hall, contrasting with the ancient surroundings. West of Jelacic Square runs Ilica Street, leading to the upper town, which was the center of municipal life 100 years ago. It is many centuries old and became a royal free city as far back as 1242. Its southern border is formed by the Strossmayer Promenade, offering a beautiful view of the entire lower town and the extensive neighborhood on the lower side of the River Save. In former times it was surrounded by a strong wall, a few relics of which are still well preserved. South of Alecia is Frankopan Street, with its small dramatic theater, a large convent for nuns, and several girls' schools. After this the visitor arrives on King Alexander Square with its Renaissance Theater devoted chiefly to opera; an old university building; Mes-trovic's statue, the Spring of Life; the Art Museum, and the technical secondary school. Southwest of King Alexander Square is Wilson Square, with the Chamber of Commerce, Trade and Industry, the Journalists' Home and numerous school buildings. Nearby also is the National Ethnographic Museum and the School of Forestry, while on Marulic Square stands the University Library, with its 300,000 volumes, and the Chemical and Physical Institute. Passing the beautiful Governmental Botanical Garden of the University, and the office building of the state railway, as well as the large palace which is the chief office of the Workers' Union, and the luxurious Esplanade Hotel, situated on Starcevic Square, one arrives back at the station after an impressive tour of the town. East of the Zriny Square lies the newest part of the city, chiefly industrial in character. There stands the beautiful and imposing Exchange Building, and the Commercial High School. There also takes place the Zagreb Fair, which is held every year and is proof of the city's advancing commercial spirit. A little further east are Zagreb's many factories. The city has its own gas establishment, an electric light and water works, and a municipal savings banks, which also runs the street railway. The city also offers excellent hotels with accommodations adapted to every taste and purse, from the fashionable de luxe hotel to the modest hostelry or the quaint old inn by the wayside. America and nearly all the European governments have consulates in Zagreb. In the beautiful town park, Maksi- mir, is a small zoological garden, which the municipality instituted a few years ago and which is now being enlarged. The faculty of medicine is situated on a hill east of the city, with the Hygienic Institute and the Episcopal Schools. A little farther north the curious Mirogoj Cemetery, with its beautiful arcades and chapel, which is shaped like a pantheon. West of the upper town lies the well appointed Tuskanac Park, which is a recreation ground for the population during the summer. The numerous hills to the east and west are adorned with villas, and the wooded Medved-nica with its towering summit forms a very picturesque background to the city. Autobus trips may be taken to nearby and more distant points, as, for instance, to Šestine, Gracani, Remete, Bukovec, Podsused and Samobor. Other excursions may be recommended to the different health resorts of Ku-rorte Krapinske, Toplice and Varaz-dinske, as well as to Rogashka Slatina, and, last, but not least, the well-known Plitvice Lakes. Sightseeing motpr tpurs with guides are organized for visitors. \ K & P FURNITURE CO. Inner-Spring Mattress (Regular $39.50 Value) The best slipping « « O 75 comfort money can f I Q* u buy.
