V torek imamo primarne volitve. Končno smo iste krvi, živimo v isti sredini in smo uživali podobno vzgojo. Nihče nam se more zameriti, če podpremo svojo lastno kri. Naj nas zastopajo v zakonodaji in v vseh drugih javnih uradih ljudje, ki nas poznajo! Le ti bodo v stanju vselej in povsod zastopati naše mnenje. Enako kandidira v 20. okraju sin slovenskih staršev Edward L. Pucel za State Central Committee (Državni centralni odbor). Ne pozabite na John W. Donahey State Treasurer in Edward L. Ihe American Economic System For almost all of the 6,000 years of recorded history, people literally starved to death in every land on earth. In many nations, a great number still starve.. We in the United States are so used to having enough to eat that we forget that a large part of the people in the world go to bed hungry every night. We forget that ours is about the only large group of people in the world who have never had a famine. There’s a reason for this. The reason is not natural resources, or physical or mental superiority over other peoples. After all, we Americans stem from every race and every country in the world —- from nations which have more natural resources than v/e do. But our ancestors were effectively able to develop and use nature’s resources only after they left their native lands and migrated to America. And thiey did this in the United States v/hile working fewer hours than they had worked back in “the old country.” Why? There’s a reason for this, all right. It is the simple reason of a fuse market economy, or comparatively free Unfortunately, our market has never been completely free from governmental interference, and it is becoming less free every year Thus we have been less productive and prosperous than we could have been; and, as long as the various restrictions against trade continue, we will not be as prosperous as a free people could be. But even so, our people generally have had more freedom of choice in buying, selling, producing, pricing, competing, working-worshipping, joining, saving, investing, earning, losing, and bargaining than have the peoples of other lands. KOVACIC An outstanding literary figure was Narte Velikonja (1891-1945), born in the village of Otlica near Ajdovščina in the Slovenian Coast-land. In 1945, the author was sentenced to death and executed by a Communistic “people’s court” in Ljubljana. Beside a number of short-stories, Velikonja was the author of the outstanding novel “Vi-šarska polena” (The Wood from Vilarje). Later, he published two more novels, “Sirote” (Orphans) and ‘Besede” (Words), in the latter he described his native village with a skill of a great artist. The youngest generation of the Slovenian authors starting its literary career shortly before World War II was partly sentimental and partly realistic. To escape from lyric in prose, Bogomir Magajna, a psysician, turned to naturalism trying to combine the both extremes. The latter social-minded prose became frequently a political tendency in the works of Tone Seliškar.,. Similar was the start of Mirko Javornik, who later found the way to great travel descriptions “Srečanja z nepoznami” (Meetings with the Unknown) and “Pomlad v Palestini’ (Spring in Palestine). Modern naturalism, frequently combined with socialistic tendencies came to existence in the works of Anton Ingolič, Miško Kranjec, and Lovrenc Kuhar (known under the pseudonym Prežihov Voranc). Ingolič described, the Field of Ptuj with its people in the novel “Lu-karji” and the life of wood-workers traveling on rafts on rivers in the novel “Na splavih” (On Rafts). The land and the people of Prekmurje found its writer in Miško Kranjec, who was often too naturalistic and pessimistic in his novels “Življenje” (The Life), “Os življenja” (The Hub of Life), “Povest o dobrih ljudeh” (The Story of Good People), etc. The works of Prežihov Voranc (Lovrenc Kuhar) was the epic description of the Mežica Valley, but frequently with socialistic tendencies. A contrast to the modern na turalism was given in the work oi Vladimir Bartol, who searched for philosophic and psychological wisdom about men, while Ivan Matičič was beside shorter novels the au Ihor of an outstanding historical novel “Živi izviri” (Living Fountains). Populars novelists of before World War II Zoree, the writer of the trilogy on the history of the monastery oi Stična “Beli menihi” (White Monks) Matija Malešič, and Janez Jalen. The latter continued Finžgar’s popular novel with a closer connection between the nature and the people in the novels “Ovčar Marko” (Herdman Marko), “Cvetkova Cilka”, “Trop brez zvoncev” (The Herd Without Bells), etc. Jalen proved to be also a good dramatist in his trilogy “Dom” (Home), “Bratje” (Brothers), and “Srenja” (Community). Modern Slovenian Poetry The modernists influenced the' Slovenian poetry in a higher1 extent than the prose. The free versei and a new expression became the common possession of the contemporary poets. The beginning impressionistic trends of the modernists, however, changed to expressionism in the poetry of Oton Žu- pančič and Joža Lovrenčič. Formalistic pietry, cultivated especially in the past century, was followed only by Engelbert Gangl and Mihael Opeka. The new formalism excelled by a witty expre-son and a movable spirit (art-ism)) found the way to the poetry of Oton Župančič, Silvin Sarden-ko, Vladimir Levstik, and Vojeslav Mole. Alojzij Merhar (1876 - 19,42) known as a poet under the pseu-the period donym Silvin Sardenko, born at were Ivan Ježica (at present a suburb of Ljubljana), became a priest and canon at the cathedral. As a student, he contributed lovable poetry for the youth and became at the beginning of the 20th century the leading poet of the magazine “Dom in svet”. Hjs first poetical collection “V mladem jutru” (In the Young Morning) contributed religious motives and tender idyllc and reflexive poetry to the work of the modernists. The study in Rome gave the poet new motives in the poetry of the eternal city in the collection “Roma”. Sardenko’s best collection of poetry was “Nebo žari” (The Sky is lighted,), the reminiscence of World War I, in which lie expressed the faith in the wounded Slovenian homeland. After World War 1, the poet published two more col- lections, “Dekliške pesmi” (Girls’ Poetry) with a little educational purpose and a collection of reflexive lyric petry “Daritev” (Sacrifice). Besides, Sardenko published a number of collections of religious poetry and shorter dramatic works. Sardenko’s poetry proved of his tender soul and a nature that tended to escape from Ih® world. Woodling, attorney, has met the challenge of the juvenile delinquency problem with a proposed Parent-Youth program based upon the development of youth and parents for better citizenship, and to establish a Parent-Youth Division in the State Department of Welfare to direct this Program. As a Sunday School Teacher for boys, and later as a Cub Scout Leader, and more so now since he is in the process of raising two boys, the problem of youth development and the prevention of juvenile delinquency has always been of prime importance to Mr. Woodling. By a unanimous vote, this week the members of the War Veterans Bar Association instructed their secretary to write a letter of commendation to Mr. Woodling 1 to the effect that his program to I prevent juvenile delinquency is : a step in the right direction, and J further, the organization is to / submit a copy of Mr. Woodling’s program to its Judicial and Legislative Committee for helpful suggestions. “My plan is to bring parents and youth closer together and to promote more family interests and recreation,” says Mr. Woodling. “Each county will govern and regulate its own Parent-Youth Board, but State planning, coordination and cooperation will be helpful to the County Parent-Youth Boards on the local level. I feel that there is need for some organization which will enable and encourage parents to meet the problem of developing youth for better citizenship and to face youth with uniform and consistent standards of expectation— for example, hours of coming in at night and other cooperative regulations. “Although there are many excellent organizations working diligently to combat this problem, there has not been a common front of concerted action. By integrating all the efforts put forth by churches, parents, established divisions, bodies, agencies, institutions and committees of State and local governments, we will develop a program for parents and youth which will provide the leadership and facilities for better citizenship,” concluded Woodling. - — Rich's Auio Body Shop COMPLETE AUTO SERVICE Painting - Motor Service Ignition - Brake Service 1078-80 East 64th Street Tel.
