John Habat, tight, contemplates the old Goss “Comet” printing press of the American Home Publishing Co. which has served its readers here since 1924. The press was built in WOT and was brought in as a used piece of equipment. Habat has his hand on the starting lever which moved a main drive leather belt from idle position to “on”. At left, American Home publisher James V. Debevec, gets set to push the “start” button of the new Solna Print King offset printing press. The button activates electronic switches and relays which puts the press into moticm. Habat is president of the Federation of Slovenian Homes which for the fourth consecutive year will publish a special edition of he American Hoine newspaper in March. Subjects discussed were: police responsibility to the community, participation of residents, juvenile criminals and lack of punishment, and the need to bolster the manpower of the civil patrol. It was evident that residents are truly alarmed with the continued worsening conditions. and look for leadership for the unification of community residents, with a common goal of working together in an effort to restore, at least some of the safety we once enjoyed. We call upon the Perry Howeo.wners Association to take hold and provide us with ‘ this leadership. • Slovenska Pesem Is Polished Gem sole purpose of the Reported by S. Frank Last Saturday evening the Slovenska pesem chorus from the Chicago-Joliet area made its first guest appearance in our area with a concert in the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Ave. The hall was filled to capacity and the balcony was also full. The chorus was under the direction of Rev. Vendelin Spendov, pastor of St. Stephen’s Church in Chicago and was accompanied by a 15-member orchestra which provided exceptional accompaniment to the almost 50-member strong choir. The concert was carefully prepared and included selections by the orchestra, the full chorus, a smaller ensemble ‘Glas Slovenije”, a duet, girl’s choir, women’s choir and an instrumental solo by Lorraine Gornick. All of the songs were in the Slovene language and included some of Rev. Spendov’s own compositions and arrangements of standard Slovene songs. It would be difficult to single out one or several selections as being superior to the others, but the audience responded with special warmth to Rev. Spendov’s arrangement of “Zabučale gore” a song which the chorus dedicated to former U.S. Senator Frank Lausche, who was in the audience .and who also made a few.most appropriate remarks. Last Sunday morning the Slovenska pesem chorus also most rewarding experience sang at the 10:30 a.m. mass at for all in attendance. St. Vitus Church. This was a Rudolph M. Admiral Hyman Rickover was speaking at the Town Hall lectures in Stouffer’s Inn on the Square downtown Cleveland last Wednesday and remarked “No dummies get into heaven.” His words evoked laughter from the audience, and he stopped his prepared speech and said he was amazed at the chuckles. He said, “Man’s greatest goals are to read, and then to write.” He stressed the importance of getting a good education. “Teachers should be the highest paid people in the world,” he said, because they train children. “And the greatest treasure in the world are our children.” On January 26 Fred Friendly, former president of COBS, and known as the creator of TV news programs with the Edward R. Murrow show, stressed the importance of freedom of the press. He outlined how the supreme court ruled in favor of the printed word being sacred. While talking with some of the workers on our new offset printing press they remarked how the newspapers in other countries are controlled by the government. The dictator issues a license for the paper, if the newspaper prints something the government doesn’t like, they immediately close the prin-tery down by revoking its license. We live in one of the few countries where freedom of the press is guaranteed by an Amendment to the Constitution. All over the U.S. newspapers have been dying ibecause of lack of money or interest. It is heartwarming to see that so many Slovenians value their own paper, the Ameriška Domovina. Their dedicated efforts on behalf of the paper will keep the beacon of freedom shining brightly, and at the same time (according to Admiral Rickover) help them earn a heavenly reward. James V. (Studia Slovenca, 15) Just off the press is this new and detailed study about the economic conditions in the Slovenian lands (Camio-la, Styria, etc.) during the third quarter of the last century. The author produced an in-formative and well-documented work based on extensive and meticulous research. He wants to show, as he puts it, “How did Slovenians deal with their economic problems during the era of their nation-building.” Of special interest in many chapters are agricultural credit, taxation, peasant debt, manufacturing, education and migration. Professor Amez presents some valuable insights of deteriorating economic conditions in the Slovenian ethnic territories in the second half of the 19th century; conditions which contributed to the rising emigration, especially to the United States.
