FBI je mnenja, da sta Lai Singh in Am-mand Singh vodila teroristično sikhsko skupino, ki je osumljena odgovornosti za oba napada. Istega mnenja so kanadski preiskovalci.
Sirhan B. Sirhan, ki je L 1968 ubil sen. Robert F. Kennedy, bo ostal v zaporu
SOLEDAD, Kalif. — Sirhan B. Sirhan, 41 let stari palestinski priseljenec v ZDA, ki je 5. junija 1968 ubil demokratskega predsedniškega kandidata in brata prav tako v atentatu ubitega predsednika ZDA Johna F. Kennedyja, sen. Roberta F. Kennedyja, bo moral ostati v zaporu. Sirhan je bil prosil za pogojno izpustitev po 17 letih v zaporu, vendar je pristojna komisija njegovo prošnjo odklonila.
Ko je pričal pred komisijo, je Sirhan dejal, da obžaluje svojega dejanja in da mu je žal za Kennedyjevo družino. Proti pogojni izpustitvi je bil lokalni tožilec Larry Trapp, ki je izrazil mnenje, da bi moral Sirhan ostati v zaporu do smrti. Sirhan je bil utemeljil svojo prošnjo s trditvijo, da so drugi, ki so ubili več ljudi, presedli v zaporu veliko manj časa, kot je on za en sam umor. Predsednik pristojne komisije Rudolph Castro pa je rekel po komisijevi odločitvi, da je bil atentat na Roberta Kennedyja »napad na naš demokratični politični sistem«.
Sovjetska vohuna priznala krivdo
LOS ANGELES, Kalif. — Včeraj sta dva priseljenca iz ZSSR priznala na sodni obravnavi, da sta res vohunila za Sovjetsko zvezo in da je z njima sodeloval 48 let stari agent FBI Richard W. Miller. Zvezni sodnik David Kenyon je takoj odredil kazen 8 let zapora za 52-Ietnega Nikolaja Ogorodnikova, kazen za 35-letno Svetlano Ogorodnikovo bo pa izrečena kasneje. Na sojenju je postalo jasno, da je Svetlana Ogorodnikov potegnila v vohunsko mrežo Millerja, njen mož pa je igral manjšo vlogo. Ogodorodnikova naj bi vzdrževala stike z neko osebo v sovjetskem konzulatu v San Franciscu.
Millerju bodo sodili kasneje, v dosedanjih izjavah pa se je branil, da v resnici ni bil vohunil za ZSSR. Njegove stike z Ogorodnikovo je opravičil s trditvijo, da je hotel izvedeti več o vohunski mreži in da bi bil potem poročal nadrejenim v FBI.
— Kratke vesti —
Bagdad, Irak — Iraška vladaje pretrgala diplomatske odnose z Libijo in sicer zaradi libijske podpore Iranu v 57 mesecev trajajoči vojni med Irakom"1ri Iranom. Pred nedavnim je Irak vzpostavil redne diplomatske odnose z ZDA.
Moskva, ZSSR — Sovjetski voditelj Mihail Gorbačov je dejal, da so Sovjeti zelo nezadovoljni z ameriškim stališčem na ženevskih pogajanjah o omejevanju oborožitvene tekme. Ako ZDA ne bodo spremenile svojega stališča napram načrtu »Vojna zvezd«, je pripomnil Gorbačov, bo ZSSR ponovno pretehtala svojo udeležbo na pogajanjih.
Islamabad, Pak. — Predstavniki pakistanske in afganistanske vlade so se sestali v želji, da bi našli miroven konec šestletni vojni v Afganistanu. Do ponovnega srečanja bo prišlo avgusta meseca. Pogovore podpirajo Združene narode.

Enotedenske počitnice—
Prihodnji teden gre AD na enotedenske počitnice. Pisarna bo zaprta do ponedeljka, 8. julija, dopoldne ob 9. uri, naslednja AD bo izšla v torek, 9. julija. Pričakovali smo, da bomo danes natisnili 16 strani redne AD ter 8-stransko prilogo, vendar zaradi zapletenega dela pri usposobljenju novega tiskarskega stroja, lahko tiskata samo dva od treh del stroja. Prepričani pa smo, da ste že opazili znatno izboljšanje v kvaliteti tiskanja.
Skupno sv. obhajilo—
Članice Oltarnega društva fare Marije Vnebovzete so vabljene k skupnemu sv. obhajilu v nedeljo, 7. julija, pri 8. sv. maši. Sestankov v mesecih julija, avgusta in septembra ne bo, skupni sv. obhajili pa bodo vsi trije meseci.
Folklorni festival—
Festival slovenske folklore, katerega prireja Slovenski folklorni inštitut, in na katerem bo prvič v ZDA v takšnem obsegu predstavljena Slovenska kmečka ohcet, se bo vršil v soboto in nedeljo, 10. in 11. avgusta, na ADZ-AMLA letovišču v Leroy, Ohio. V četrtek, 4. julija, Dan neodvisnosti ZDA, priredi Ženski odsek SNPJ farme piknik s kosilom na tej farmi na Heath Rd. v Kirtlandu. Popusti pri ogrevanju hiš—
Mnogi Ohijčani so upravičeni do posebnega popusta pri stroških za ogrevanje njih hiše ali stanovanja v zimskih mesecih. Prosilci morajo izpolniti tri osnovne pogoje: 1) morajo živeti v lastni hiši ali stanovanju in biti odgovorni za vzdrževanje drugih stanovalcev; 2) mora biti najmanj 65 let star ali pa popolnoma in trajno nesposoben za delo; 3) ni imel več kot $9000 dohodka iz vseh virov v 1. 1984 ali pa ne bo imel $9000 dohodka v 1. 1985. Da dobite popust za ogrevanje hiše ali stanovanje v 5 zimskih mesecih pa je treba vložiti prošnjo na posebnem, tiskanem formularju. Te formularje lahko dobite v bankah, poštah in knjižnicah. O narodni spravi

»Duh je izšel iz steklenice« je naslov članka, ki ga je iz Tisoč in ene noči povzel Milan Apih, eden izmed uradnih recenzentov (cenzorjev) Kocbekovega zbornika, kakor je članek Apih napisal za ljubljanski Dnevnik dne 2. marca letos.
Preden se spustim v prikaz ostre polemike, ki se je sprožila okrog vsebine tega Kocbekovega zbornika, kateri leži že natisnjen v tiskarni, ker ga »ljudska« oblast ne dovoli izdati, bo umestno v kratkih črtah osvežiti važne dogodke iz zadnjih let v zvezi s pokolom domobrancev.
Vsestransko je znana stvar, da so komunistične oblasti v Sloveniji s partijo na čelu strogo prepovedale vsako omembo pokola, zaprle dostop do množičnih grobov in uvedle nad to strahotno tragedijo popoln tabu. Veljal je celih 30 let, ko v republiki Sloveniji ni smel nihče o tem niti črhniti, celo v zamejstvu se je o tem le zelo redko kdaj kaj malega omenilo; le povojna politična emigracija je zvesto držala luč prižgano, da zločin nad narodom ni utonil v temini pozabe.
Po dolgi dobi 30 let je krščanskega socialista in vodilnega partizana Edvarda Kocbeka, odgovornega tudi za ta pokol in za vse strašno gorje komunistične revolucije, grizenje njegove še krščanske vesti prisililo I. 1976, da je pomor domobrancev javno priznal kot veliko krivdo, to strahopetno dejanje obžaloval in pozval k priznanju in obžalovanju vse, ki so odgovorni za zločin. In je dodal dobesedno: »Brez tega dejanja Slovenci ne bomo stopili v čisto in jasno prihodnost.« Ta zapozneli korak je Kocbek drago plačal. Povzročil je namreč velik alarm in vihar v Sloveniji, kateremu so sledili žolčni in sramotni napadi na Kocbeka, ki so ga duševno strli. Umrl je osamljen, od partijcev zaničevan in zavržen, zapuščen in življenjsko strt I. 1981. Zapustil pa je bogato literarno dediščino, saj je bil velik umetnik peresa, čeprav reven v politični umetnosti.
Njegovi somišljeniki in občudovalci so se po njegovi smrti trudili, in se še vedno trudijo, da bi zgodovinsko podobo svojega vzornika očistili njegovih moralnih in političnih zmot in ga postavili v pravo perspektivo do revolucije in njenih strašnih posledic. V ta namen je deseterica njegovih častilcev sestavila v knjižni obliki Kocbekov zbornik, ki je bil lani dotiskan, a ga je oblast ustavila in ni smel iziti. V njem je namreč natisnjena razprava Spomenke Hribar, sociologinje in filozofinje, bivše članice centralnega komiteja KPS, ki je vneta zagovornica Kocbekovih idej. V razpravi Hribarjeva razvija Kocbekov poziv k priznanju velike krivde in k narodni spravi, ki naj bi bila simbolizirana v visokem obelisku sredi Ljubljane v spomin vsem »padlim za domovino«.
Prepovedano besedilo Hribarjeve iz neobjavljenega Kocbekovega zbornika ilegalno kroži po Sloveniji in ljudje slastno berejo temeljite in globoke misli iz njene razprave »Krivda in greh«.

Romanje Oltarnih društev v Lemont
CLEVELAND, O. - Zopet se bliža čas vsakoletnega romanja Zveze oltarnih društev v Clevelandu v naš lepi Lemont. Letos bo naše romanje v soboto in nedeljo, 10. in 11. avgusta.
Predno sem začela ta članek pisati, sem pregledala seznam romaric od leta 1975. Kar streslo me je, ko sem videla, koliko jih je že umrlo in koliko jih je danes tako bolanih, da ne morejo več iti z nami. Mnoge stanujejo v starostnih domovih. Bile so zveste, zveste romance vsako leto. Kako rade bi zopet romale, ako bi le mogle. Kako srečne smo vse, mislim, ki smo še zdrave, da lahko romamo v Lemont. Slava in hvala Bogu in Materi božji!
Lepo vas prosim, drage članice in faranke pri Mariji Vne-bovzeti in tudi drugih farah, priglasite se kmalu za romanje v Lemont! Upamo, da bomo lahko napolnile vsaj dva avtobusa, osebno pa upam, da bom izpolnilo mojo nalogo — 30 romaric.
Pomagajmo naši dobri, zvesti Zvezini predsednici Mary Marinko, ki si toliko prizadeva in trudi za vzdrževanje tega vedno lepega romanja! Veliko dela in skrbi ima, zato vas še enkrat prosim, da se odločite in priglasite že danes. Pokažimo, da smo res zveste katoličanke in članice Oltarnih društev. Naša nebeška Mati nas pričakuje z odprtimi rokami in odprtim srce. Pojdimo se Ji zahvaliti za vse prejete dobrote in izročiti se Ji v varstvo. Ne vemo ne dneva ne ure, kdaj nas bo Bog poklical na odgovor za vse, kar smo storile na tem svetu. Z molitvami in žrtvovanjem si bomo dobile milost pri Bogu in Materi božji.

Na gornji sliki vidimo plesalce Slovenskega folklornega inštituta na klopci pred cerkvijo National Shrine v Washingtonu,v kateri je slovenska kapela in kamor je SFI pred kratkim romal na božjo pot. Od desne proti levi so Vesna Prelog v ljubljanski noši, Nadine Lisac v goriški noši, Denise Grčar v koroški. Veronika Dejak v belokranjski, in Sofija Dimitrijevič ter Gregor Sedmak v gorenjski narodni noši. Te in druge pokrajinske noše bodo predstavljene tudi na FESTIVALU SLOVENSKE FOLKLORE, katerega pripravlja SFI in na katerem bo letošnja posebnost KMEČKA OHCET, v soboto in nedeljo, 10. i" 11. avgusta, na ADZ letovišču v Leroy, Ohio.

EUCLID, O. mesečni seji našega kluba je bilo živahno, saj je bilo nad 300 članov navzočih.
Tokrat nas je zabaval karikaturist Dick Dugan od Cleveland Plain Dealerja. Zanimivo in šaljivo nam je pokazal, kako z malimi potezami naredi ali spremeni vsakovrstne osebnosti. Hvaležni smo g. Duga-nu za zabavo.
Predsednik Frank Česen je ponovno povedal, da bo klubov piknik v sredo, 17. julija, na »farmi« SNPJ na Heath Rd.
Piknik Federacije upokojenskih klubov bo pa na istem prostoru v sredo, 14. avgusta.
Dalje je preds. Česen poročal, da bo naš klub tudi letos sodeloval pri festivalu na E. 185. cesti. Več podrobnosti o tem bodo podane prihodnji mesec.

Vidmar, poznani šef OF, za njim pa z večjo ali manjšo jedkostjo vrsta drugih komunističnih veličin v dnevnem časopisju. Vnela se je zelo nečedna polemika, ki prizadetemu časopisju gotovo ni v čast. Oglasil se je tudi, v uvodnih besedah tega sestavka imenovani, Milan Apih, eden od uradnih cenzorjev Kocbekovega zbornika, čigar opredelitev zasluži omembo. Med drugim Apih ugotavlja: »Ob tem se nam vsiljuje vprašanje, ali je po štiridesetih letih res prezgodaj za odpravo vseh embargov, ki ne morejo skriti zgodovinske resnice? Morda zato, ker so mnogi neposredni udeleženci te tragedije še živi? Ali pa, ker krivci med njimi še niso pripravljeni priznati svojega dejanja, ki ga kljub temu, da se je zgodilo v izjemnih okoliščinah, pač ni mogoče imenovati drugače kakor zločin?«
»Že ko sem pisal svojo recenzijo o prispevku S. H. sem se vprašal: Narodna sprava? Ali ni tudi ta sintagma tabu, ki vzbuja sum in strah? Čeprav je jasno, da ne gre za spravo z belogardizmom (Nesmisel!), temveč za spravo med ljudmi... kot kohezijo vseh narodnih sil, vseh ustvarjalnih sil naroda, ob priznanju nazorskega pluralizma, kar je tudi edina alternativa — kot neizpolnjena dolžnost revolucije... Že neštetokrat izdelana raziskava neogibno pripelje do sklepa, da smo bili takrat, ko se je to dogajalo, v železnem objemu in pod ideološko in materialno peto Stalina.«
»Ali bomo spravili duha nazaj v steklenico? Zato pa naj s svojih skromnih pozicij nazadnje še jaz apeliram k spravi.« Tako razmišlja in sklepa cenzor neobjavljenega Kocbekovega zbornika Milan Apih.	(Dalje)

NEKAJ MISLI O EMIGRANTU

Nobena teh treh teorij — pelting pot, pluralizem, asimi-acija — sama zase ne opiše zadovoljivo procesa adaptirala emigranta in njegovega
element, ki se mi zdi, da manjka vsem trem. Preveč namreč gledajo na emigranta z vidika stare ali nove domovine in premajhno vlogo igra v njih emigrant sam po sebi. Stara in nova domovina mu naprtita svoja pričakovanja in ideale;
kot avto prof. Timoteja Pnina je stisnjen mednje. Stara domovina ga morda gleda kot izgubljen človeški potencial ali kot vir gospodarske in politične koristi; nova domovina ga ima predvsem za gradivo, ki ga je treba preoblikovati, ker
bi morda drugače ogrožal njeno pristnost.
2. Emigrantova eksistenca
Vprašati se je treba, ne kako drugi doživljajo emigranta, ampak kako emigrant sam doživlja novo domovino in življenje v njej, kako doživi presaditev iz enih tal v druga, kakšni so njegovi odnosi do stare in nove domovine, kakšne so njegove potrebe in pričakovanja.
Toda takoj se pojavi pomislek, da se emigrantovo dojemanje sebe in življenja, ki ga živi, vendar razčleni in izrazi v miselnih kategorijah kulture, katero je zapustil, in kulture, v kateri se je znašel. Vsa njegova miselna in izrazna sredstva, pojmovanja in občevanja, so ustvarjena in oblikovana v okoljih, v katerih je živel in živi. Vendar mu ta okolja, ti »naravno« rastoči organizmi ne morejo nuditi pojmov in občutenj, ki bi popolnoma odgovarjali njegovi izkušnji — to je vsaj delni odogovor na gornji pomislek.
Pomislimo na dejstvo, da bo dal nekaj svojega novi domovini le pod pogojem, da temu delu ne posveti skoro nobene energije; če namreč hoče, da bo imel kaj nuditi, mora ostati sam svoj. Po drugi strani se spomnim jokavih opisov izseljenskega življenja, ki sem jih prebiral v svoji slovenski mladosti. Pa se ne najdem v njih, kajti ne čutim izgube ali odtujenosti od svojih slovenskih korenin in ne vzdihujem po dolinah in gričih, med katerimi sem zrastel. Toda preden postanem prepiker, moram priznati, da so v meni strune, ki drhte le ob slovenskih melodijah.
Emigrant je prehodno bitje, ki ni rojeno kot tako in se kot tako ne reproducira. Usoda, ki mu je naložena, ostane le njegova. Kot takega ga ne razumeta ne oče ne sin, ker nista primorana izkoreniniti se. Njemu samemu ni do iskanja kategorij, ki bi ga natančno opisale, in drugim tudi ne. Delo za vsakdanji kruh ga ponavadi tako zaposli, da nima časa za introspekcijo.
Socialne vede, psihologija in zgodovina v svojih raziskava-njih predpostavljajo neko stabilnost. Čeprav se jasno zavedajo sprememb, napredka in razvoja, iščejo, in ker iščejo najdejo, organično kontinuiteto, ki jim dovoljuje, da jo vsaj delno izmerijo in predvidijo.
Emigrantovo življenje pa je razcepljeno in vrženo v nepredvidljiv tok; čeprav je dežela, kjer se naseli, vse preje kot kaos, jo doživi kot kaos. Njen jezik ni njegov in ker mu sprva ni razumljiv, mu je tudi manj razumljiva stvarnost, katero opiše, ureja in posreduje. Navade, prazniki, navdušenja, humor, javni in privatni medsebojni odnosi in razmerja — vse to je vsaj delno drugačno, nerazumljivo, vznemirjajoče. Jezik je le najbolj občuteni element tujosti.
Emigrant doživi boleče srečanje s svojo zgodovinskostjo; opore, ki so mu doslej služile, se spodmaknejo in vsa eksistenca postane krhka. Ni prav
ta krhkost in bežnost resnična snov zgodovine in zgodovinopisja? Menil bi, da je, vendar je zelo naravna in razumljiva, želja raziskovati to, kar traja in obljublja, da bo trajalo na viden in otipljiv način — s tem postanemo deležni stalnosti snovi, ki jo študiramo.
Zato emigrant sam po sebi ni privlačen predmet zgodovinopisja, kajti oprijemljiva stalnost ni ena njegovih značilnosti. Kljub temu pa bi se zdelo, da ga moramo študirati kot takega, že zato ker je danes preseljevanje univerzalen pojav. Poleg tega nam nudi paradigmo vsakega človeškega življenja, že po naravi krhkega in bežnega. Nadalje je bežnost le en element njegove biti. Kot emigrant se sicer ne reproducira, reproducira pa se kot človeško bitje, podvrženo pritiskom vseh vrst in oblikovano po njih; celo od svoje bežnosti se uči in razvije obrambne mehanizme, ki ostanejo. Njegovi otroci podedujejo njegovo trmasto trdoživost, fatalistični optimizem, samozavestno svo-bodnjaštvo, pa tudi odtujenost, skrbno prikrito bolečino in komplekse.
3. Emigrantovi odnosi
a) Rodna dežela
Emigrantov odnos do rojstnega kraja se začne spreminjati takoj, ko ga zapusti. Vezi, močne vezi, seveda ostanejo.
Te vezi so morda najbolj vidne pri političnem ali ideološkem beguncu, toda enako globoke so pri ekonomskem emigrantu. Ohrani stik s sorodniki, sosedi in prijatelji, ki jih je zapustil, in le postopoma spremeni ali opusti politično pripadnost in navdušenja, ki jih je prinesel s seboj; še dolga leta se zanima za uspehe in poraze svojega nogometnega kluba. Domov pošilja denar, na domovino je ponosen, obišče jo in pelje s seboj svoje otroke.
Vpliv emigrantskih skupin na staro domovino zna biti precejšen. V preteklem stoletju so doprinesle svoje k rasti narodne zavesti pri nekaterih pozno zorečih evropskih narodih (gl. W. Herberg, Prote-stant-Catholic-Jew, str. 23-28).
Nekatera gibanja med emigranti so odločilno posegla v politični razvoj svojih domovin; najvidnejša primera sta Lenin in ajatola Homeini. Služijo lahko kot svetilniki svobode domovini, kajti dejstvo samo, da eksistirajo in delujejo, jo opominja, da so mogoče tudi druge politične in družbene strukture poleg tistih, ki so ji vsiljene.
V teh skupinah najdemo lepo število nadpovprečno močnih osebnosti: ideološki begunec je bežal zato, ker je imel pogum in iniciativo javno se identificirati z določenim gibanjem in imeti voditeljsko vlogo, vsaj na lokalni ravni. Ekonomski emigrant pa ima pogum da pretrga vezi z vsakdanjo domačnostjo, in sposobnost, da začne na novo in na svoje.

IGNACIJ HREN
Pokojni je bil rojen 27. julija 1891 v Verdu pri Vrhniki. Leta 1945 je s svojo družino z Ostalimi begunci zapustil domovino, preživel deset let v begunskih taboriščih v Italiji in leta 55 prišel sem v Cleveland. Preden je dočakal svoj 94. rojstni dan, je po kratki bolezni na °niu med svojimi izdihnil svojo plemenito dušo. Pokopan je bil 1. junija 1985 na pokopa-'Šču Vernih Duš, kjer čaka njegovo truplo vstajenja.
Čutimo dolžnost, da se zahvalimo vsem, ki so pokojnemu ob smrti na kakršenkoli nač>n izkazali svojo naklonjenost in nam v težkih dneh stali ob strani.
Najprej naša globoka zahvala svetovidskim duhovnikom. Prečastitima gospodoma _ ®*etu Simčiču in Jožetu Božnarju se zahvaljujemo, da sta očetu prinesla sveto popotnico mu Podelila zakramente za umirajoče. Iskrena hvala tudi obema za molitev rožnega Vhe"ca °b krsti. Gospodu župniku Božnarju, gospodu Simčiču in gospodu Kumšetu prisrčna ala za somaševanje pri pogrebni sveti maši ter gospodu župniku še posebej za globoke |. sh v nagovoru med sveto mašo. Pravtako se mu zahvaljujemo za spremstvo na pokopa-e 'n molitve opravljene ob grobu.

Sv *Jepo seie pokojnega spomnila skupina romarjev v Lurd in Fatimo, kjer so darovali za • maše za rajnega. Bog jim povrni za to lepo misel.
Naša iskrena hvaležnost velja tudi vsem, ki so v tako lepem številu prišli našega eRa očeta na mrtvaškem odru kropit in molit za pokoj njegove duše. Hvala tudi vsem, So ustno ali pismeno izrazili sožalje.

Misijonska srečanja in pomenki
660. O. JANEZ MUJDRICA, D.J.
se je oglasil kratko pred odhodom v domovino in kasneje nazaj v Zambijo. Srečen je v misijonskem delu in vsem se v molitev priporoča.
Mater Terezija je bila med nami v Torontu v cerkvi sv. Sebastijana 24. junija ob pol treh. Tako nas je škofija povabila tja, če želimo dobro sestro srečati. Od presednika Reagana je v Washingtonu prejela odlikovanje za njeno neumorno delo za uboge in pozabljene. Navadno tako odlikovanje samo Amerikanci dobijo. Predsednik Reagan je dejal, da ga ona zasluži kot »državljanka celega sveta«.
Za par dni je v Toronto prišel tudi župnik Božidar Slap-šak, ki je na pogreb svojega brata Julija iz domovine prišel.
Pred odhodom na obisk v domovino se je oglasil z nekaj vrsticami brat Jožko Kramar iz Nove Gvineje. Nekaj znamk je poslal, prosil tudi, da mu A.D. ustavimo, ker da bo po povratku prestavljen v Rabaeil. Vsem misijonskem sodelavcem v MZA pošilja lepe pozdrave.
Iz Trsta lepo pozdravlja in za vse moli sodelavka gdč. Dora Kosovel. Spet je poslala lepe znamke, kot to dela že vrsto let.
G. Franc Šeškar iz Monako-vega začetku junija piše, da je g. Vinko Zaletel v bolnici, skoraj slep. Pravi, da je nekaj časa kar vsak dan maševal za naše rajne domobrance. Vseh se redno spominja pri sv. maši.
Iz Milwaukeeja sporoča ga. Frances Dragan, da se je mož vrnil iz bolnice in pošilja za sv. mašo za predsednico MZA go. Mici Coffelt. Obema pionirjema želimo, da bi mogla še mnogo let nadaljevati z misijonskim sodelovanjem v pomoč vsem našim na terenu.
Kanosijanka s. Anica Miklavčič bo v juliju premeščena v drugo hišo in bo njen naslov v bodoče: Canossian Retreat House Honeywille, 57 Mount Davis Road, Hong Kong. A.D. zanjo je prav že sedaj spremeniti, ker pošta hodi počasi po morski poti. Molimo zanjo, kot ona dela dnevno za nas.
Družina Marije in Vida Rovanšek iz Sudburyja obnavlja letno vzdrževalnino za domačega bogoslovca v Afriki. Več vzdrževanih bogoslovcev se je oglasilo in smo dobrotnikom razposlali njihove vrstice. Večina so se oglasili iz Ghane.
Jezuit o. Vladimir Kos
se oglaša z nekaj lepimi znamkami za Binkošti kot dar MZA. Nadaljujemo danes z njegovim sestavkom, kjer smo zadnjič končali:
»Na prvi pogled prošnji krik »Stvarnik, ohrani Slovence!« ne zadeva MZA, ki ima oči uprte v ves misijonski svet, toda tak površen pogled se kmalu umakne globljemu razumevanju misijonskega sodelovanja. V tem smislu premore občestvo več kot posameznik; oboje je potrebno za misijonsko delo v polnem razmahu; občestvo lahko deluje le po poedincih; poedinec pa črpa polno človeško moč iz občestva; in vse to velja podobno tudi za nadnaravni svet, ki tvori temelj misijonskemu delovanju in sodelovanju.
Zavestno misijonska MZA s tem (ali podobnim) prošnjim krikom (besede same niso tako važne) izpove ne le odvisnost od božjega dela, ki hoče tudi v odrešenem stvarstvu rabiti enovitega činitelja iz občestva in poedinca; tudi lastno nebogljenost izpove, navezano na čas in prostor in ostale oko-
liščine, ki jih mora Gospod po svoje urediti, da se bo v njih območju lahko razvijalo misijonsko so-delovanje.
Prošnji krik »Stvarnik, ohrani Slovence!« postane na šahovnici zgodovine posebna oblika sodelovanja z milostjo: z milostjo misijonske zavzetosti in misijonskega so-delova-nja, v kolikor nam je bila dana v izkušnjo dobrega, ki ga hočemo imeti še nadalje pri sebi; ni nam namreč vseeno, ali to milost imamo ali ne; želimo jo ohraniti, ker pomeni neke vrste »veselo moč za vsak dan življenja«, kot o milosti poje in si želi psalmist (89-90:14).
Vsi poznamo
tisto starodavno, lepo molitev Angelskega češčenja, čeprav nihče ne ve, kdo je dokončno zlil Zdravamarije in ostale molitve v eno celoto, neke vrste duhovno popevko, s katero lahko razveselimo srce naše nebeške Matere Marije vsaj trikrat na dan. Spomni jo namreč na to, da je bila izbrana izmed vseh človeških otrok in žena za Božjo Mater. Kakor je molitev Angelskega češčenja starodavna, tako je s stoletji rodov okrašena navada, da jo molimo ob začetku dnevne luči, ob njenem zenitu in ob njenem zatonu: Kristus, naš Gospod, je Luč, ki je pregnala temo (Jan 1:5.9); najvišja in najgloblja Luč (ITim 6:16), ki tudi ob naravnem zatonu luči ne pozna zatona (Jan 8:12); Ps 17-18:29).
Trikrat na dan lahko s to duhovno popevko razveselimo srce naše ljube nebeške Matere, in kjer je njeno srce veselo, je veselo tudi srce njenega Božjega Sina. Kaj, ko bi na koncu te nebeško priljubljene popevke dodali — kot neke vrste srčni refren — besede: »Stvarnik, ohrani Slovence!?
Stvarnik, ohrani Slovence za širjenje vesti, da se je božji Sin resnično učlovečil v Mari-
ji, da bi nas s svojo smrtjo na križu odrešil in po Svetem Duhu včlanil v novo človeštvo! Jasno je, da gre za večjo žrtev, če darujemo to molitev v obliki S.O.S. trikrat na dan, namesto enkrat na dan ali celo le enkrat na teden — zato pa smemo več upati. Tako je, kakor s tehtnico, na katero polagamo darove: na eni strani je Gospodova obljuba, »kjer sta dva ali trije zbrani v mojem imenu« (Mat 18:20), na drugi strani pa svarilne besede o kriteriju ali »meri« (Lk 6:38), po katerem se na dnu srca ravnamo, in pa tista neprekosljiva prilika o trdem sodniku, ki se je dal omehčati, in ki se bo v osebi Večnega Sodnika dal omehčati, če bo dovolj zaupne vere pri prosilcu (Lk 18:1-8).
Zavedam se,
da govorim o določeni žrtvi, obenem pa se zavedam, da predstavlja nekaj vzvišeno lepega, tako zame kot za druge Slovence. Ko bi to možnost uresničili, jaz in drugi Slovenci, bi se na poseben način trkali na nebeško materinsko srce Kraljice Slovencev (besedo »Kraljica« moramo imeti v njenem nadnaravnem smislu), namreč tako, da bi iskali božjo pomoč (prim. Ps 120-121:2) v Njeni navzočnosti in ob njeni pozornosti, ki — kakor nekoč v Kani Galilejski — potrebuje le nekaj znakov zaupne osebne vdanosti, da se na svoj kraljevsko darežljiv način odzove.«

ANTHONY B. OKICKI
Anthony B. Okicki passed away early Saturday morning, June 22, after a long illness. He was 77 years old. A resident of East 157, Mr. Okicki was a retired conductor for the New York Railroad.
Mr. Okicki was a member of 'he Collinwood Pensioners and KSKJ St. Joseph’s Lodge No. 169.
He is survived by his wife, Mary M. (nee Zupančič) of whom he was married to for 50 years. His sister Mary Codosky preceded him in death. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces.

The United Slovenian Society is proud to announce that the famous Lojze Slak Ensemble of Slovenia, Yugoslavia will be coming to Cleveland and Ohio for the fourth time July 31 and August 28 through September 2.
The opening night “Preview Performance” will take place Wednesday, July 31, at the East 185 Street “Old World Festival” on East 185 St. at Arrowhead Ave. just off the 1-90 freeway. A Slovenian “Grand March” will precede the appearance at 6:45 p.m. from Tony’s Polka Village to the entertainment site.
From here, the Slak Ensemble goes on an American and Canadian tour until the end of August, when they once again will appear in this area. A “Pensioners Performance” will be held Wednesday, Aug. 28, the Slovenian Society Home, 20713 Recher Ave. in Euclid at 2 p.m. This event is restricted to all senior citizens. Tickets are $5 for the concert and dance and are available from officers and at the Clubroom.
On Friday, Aug. 30, the Slak Ensemble will appear for a “Penn-Ohio Performance,” a cabaret show and dance at 7 p,m. at the Idora Park Ballroom, Rt. 62, Youngstown, Ohio. The Tony Kepec Orchestra of Girard will entertain for the dance. Tickets are $7 and are available from Tony Klepec or Idora Park. This is a BYOB event.
“Slovenian Night with Slak” will be held Saturday, Aug. 31, with a dinner, dance, and show at the Slovenian National Home, 6417 St. Clair Ave. Reserved table seating is $15 per person with dinner starting at 7 p.m. Balcony seats (no dinner) are available for the show at 8:30 at $7 each.
Once again, the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Ave. will be the scene of a
“Slovenian Concert with Slak on Sunday, Sept. 1, with a concert program and dance to begin at 3 p.m. Following the concert, dancing will take place with the Slak Ensemble and the Jeff Pecon Orchestra entertaining. Adult tickets are $7 and children under 12 tickets are $4.
The final grand performance will be a “Super Slovenian Fest” on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, at AMLA recreation Center on Kniffen Rd., Leroy Township (Painesville, off 1-90 Exit 295). This picnic atmosphere event will take place from 2 p.m. on. Besides the featured Slak Ensemble appearance, entertainment will be provided by the U.S.S. Band, and colorful folk dancers. Button box groups playing in various tent areas will include Buttons and Bows Button Box Club, Fairport Ensemble, Holmes Hall But-tonaires, Kusar’s Button Box Gang, Northern Ohio Button Box Club, Penn-Ohio Button Box Club, Slovenian Society Home Sqlieezeboxers, and the West Park Button Box Club. A variety of food and refreshments will be available. General admission tickets can be purchased at the gate on the day of the event for $4.
A new album “Vandrovč or “Wanderer” plus some of the previously released Slak LPs and' cassette tapes will be on sale as a benefit of the project by the U.S.S.
The U.S.S. members are selling benefit drawing tickets for an authentic Melodija button box accordion or a cash prize, which will be given at the final performance.

Elizabeth Speck-Kern, the
daughter-in-law of Anne and Frank Kern of Cleveland, received her doctorate in school psychology from the University of South Carolina last month (May 18).
She is married to David F. Kern, a State House reporter for the State, South Carolina’s largest newspaper.
Dr. Speck-Kern’s research focused on the possible role of mild forms of brain damage in children who have difficulty

with mathematics. After graduation, she accepted a job as chief psychologist for the rehabilitation wing at Crafts-Farrow State Hospital in Columbia, S.C.
The Kerns joined the graduate’s parents, C.Q. and Peggy Speck, who travelled from their home in Little Rock, Ark., and after a graduation celebration in Columbia, everyone headed for a weekend at Myrtle Beach.

Helen Jarem, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Jarem of Euclid, Ohio, graduated on Sunday, June 2, from Regina High School. Among the scholarships Misš Jarem received were a $2,275 scholarship from the University of Dallas, Texas, but she declined it; the Presidential Scholarship from Cleveland State University, which covers her first quarter of tuition her freshman year, and the Ohio Board of Regents Scholarship for ranking as one of the top 1000 high students in Ohio. The award involves receiving $1,000 every year for four years.
She is also a semi-finalist in the Communication Education Scholarship Foundation’s scholarship competion. Helen has decided to attend CSU, starting this summer, and major in Business. Her ultimate goal is to receive a Master’s degree in International Business. Some of her accomplishments at Regina include being a member of the National Honors Society, hav-
ing been commissioned as one of the first student Eucharistic Ministers at Regina, and of course, her class rank — third of 147.

and Sunday, Aug. 10 and 11 to AMLA Recreation Center in Leroy, Ohio, where there will a lot of fun for everyone. Come to the Festival of Slovene Folklore where you W*H enjoy colorful folkloric dancers from United States and Canada. For two days there will be over 10 popular orchestras playing for your enjoyment both before and after the performances.
Special feature this year will e Pageant of the Peasant deciding of the old world of
and traditions. These weddings as once celebrated in Slovenia would last a whole week.
Kmečka Ohcet at AMLA will last only two days, but it will portray all the typical original customs that our people respected and preserved through 1,000 years of Slovene history.
Most of these rituals are today described only in books that our young generations most likely don’t bother to read, since the endless modern
keeps them,too occupied.
Bride wilfbe from the region of Bela Krajina, the groom will be from .Koroško. The ceremonies will introduce unique traditions from all Slovenian regions i with music, customs and motives. Much progress is being made in the restoration of homes and historical landmarks. There are many Churches and Temples and much pride is taken by the citizens of Richmond in its historical background. Many organizations and groups are busy keeping tours, festivals, and cultural activities alive.
We saw two large equestrian-mounted statues of Lee and Jackson. We were sorry not to be able to see the only statue posed for by Washington since it was indoors. The guide told us that people who viewed the statue thought that the intense expression in his eyes was caused by anxieties of office, but the truth is that the artist caught Washington bargaining for a mule and he captured that look in his eyes.
We passed many different styles of houses each with its own decorative accents. There were as many homes with wrought-iron decorations as you would probably find in New Orleans. If a place is torn down and wrought-iron railings had been on the house or grounds, they were removed and used in another restoration area. In certain areas, before you can paint or change any outside features, you have to get approval of a special legislative committee.

Besides the leader, Privsek, other members of the orchestra are Andrej Arnold and Albert Podgornik on alt. saxophones, Tone Janša, Dusan Veble on tenor saxophones, and Zoran Komac on baritone sax.
Trumpet section consists of Pavel Grašič, Petar Ugrin, Marko Misjak, and Tomaz Grintal.
Trombonists are Franc Puhar, Emil Spruk, Alojz Krajnčan, and Aleksander Grašič.
Silvo Stingl is on piano, Milan Ferlež, guitar, and Ladislav Rebrek, bass, with Ratko Divjak the drummer.
The first conductor immediately after the end of the war and leading it up to 1963
was Bojan Adamic. He was followed by Joze Privsek.
The Big Band of Radio Ljubljana has appeared in Austria, Hungary, USSR, and West Germany where it had remarkable success in the jazz festivals there.
These appearances in the fifties were followed by tours through France, Italy and Switzerland.
In Germany they became regulars on the radio network called, “Dancing Parties on Saturday Night.” They performed at International Dancing Contest in Munich and later at Garmish as well as at the so called “Crazy Days” of the Munich-Carnival of 1973/74 where the band was highly acclaimed especially by the youth.
On Dec. 9, 1983 the orchestra appeared at Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana in a special jazz program. Both the audience and musicians there agreed this was probably the best concert in the history of big band music.
American singer Joan
Faulkner lent her voice to the occasion and was very warmly received. A record came from the concert which is probably the best big band music ever recorded.
In the number called “In" diana” the entire orchestra plays with such precision that 10 musical instruments punch in and out as if there was only one person playing.
Other numbers include “Makin’ whopee,” “Misty. “Ain’t Misbehavin’ ”, anC* “Georgia on my mind.”
A few of the strictly if' strumental triumphs include “Blue Hawaii,” “Thunder-ball,”	“Edelweiss,
“Mexico,” and “The Entertainer.”
Joze Privsek is the arranger throughout. He received some of his musical education >n Boston, Mass. He is otf Slovenian everyone should e proud to claim as their own.
One of the greatest privilege5 in life would be to hear Joze Privsek conduct the Big Ban of Radio Ljubljana.

Any person living in a neighborhood in the city of Cleveland understands that without the cooperation bet-Ween private citizens, businesses, and public/private institutions, the growth of an urea will turn into stagnation and, eventually, decay will occur.
St. Vitus parish is similar to many private institutions in Cleveland. It provides an en-vironment where people may express their religious beliefs, ’^here neighborhood children are educated and receive a set defined values and morals. Where culture and language are expressed in the form of Pfayer, dance, song, and art. And where people can feel at °me with one another. In Jovenian this term is domači: feeling of family and home.”

The St. Vitus Festival Committee
The parishioners at St. Vitus parish and in the Greater Cleveland area have either heard or seen the above headline appear on either print, radio or television. But you may be asking yourself just who are these people, the Festival Committee.
The St. Vitus Festival Committee is a group of dedicated persons, like so many other volunteers in Greater Cleveland who decide the format and approach of fund raising for capital improvements at St. Vitus parish through summer and fall festivals.
The current members range in age from late teens to mid-60s. Both males and females participate on the Committee. The direct leadership is-entrusted to a three-person chairmanship: one male and two females.
The festivals also provide an opportunity for the parishioners at St. Vitus to unite and work together regardless of whatever organization a parishioner may belong to: a unique manner to share in the commitment and results of the efforts of many persons.
The Committee is responsible	for
establishing procedures, voting on format and entertainment, safety and security precautions, and many other details for both events.
The members of the Committee are just like you: hoping their efforts will make an improvement in the lives of many persons.
10K Run Benefits School Program
St. Vitus Church proudly announces it will sponsor its 2nd Annual 10K Benefit Run.
While the proceeds from last year’s race helped fund the summer jobs youth program, this year’s proceeds will go towards the purchase of computer hardware and software for the children of St. Vitus School. Basic hands-on knowledge of computers is fast becoming the standard for future careers and our pastor. Rev. Joseph Boznar, wants the children of St. Vitus to be well-equipped in skills for tomorrow. Every year at this time St. Vitus Parish hosts a popular summer festival consisting of warm hospitality, friendship, entertainment, ethnic culinary menus and much more. This year the summer festival is set for July 12,! 3 and Mth. Cotp.-ing as it does in the hot days of Summer, the Festival presents a welcome respite from summer heat, it brings together old neighbors and friends, and a homecoming occasion for present and former parishioners of St. Vitus Parish.
There is, of course, a hopeful expectation in every person’s heart of winning one or more of the cash and other valuable gifts all amounting to over $5,550.00.
You may be wondering about this publication, called a tabloid. This is also a first for our Summer Festival. By words and even more by pictures, we want to show you, at least on the surface of things, a!! that St. Vitus Parish is today. On this occasion we frvr-ncprl on St Vitnc School It has helped prepare for life thousands of boys and girls from St. Vitus Parish. This year it has taken another important step in this direction with the acquisition of a computer lab consisting of ten computers and two printers.
The school children are very grateful to the many generous parishioners who by their
donations made it all possible. In the coming school year we shall make a study if perhaps there is a need for a preschool piogiam ui u day care center at St. Vitus School.
We take this opportunity to thank our parishioners and many friends for their persistent support of St. Vitus Parish and its various service programs. History of a Parish: St. Vitus

The First Slovenian Greater Cleveland is a diverse metropolitan area that consists of many persons of various national origins. The near northeast side of Cleveland is considered the home of one such nationality, the Slovenians. The Slovenes are a distinct ethnic group in Yugoslavia whereby Slovenia is an autonomous republic situated in the northern most section in Yugoslavia.
The first permanent Slovenian settler in the Cleveland area was Jožef Turk. He arrived in October 1881. He became very active in the St. Clair area and was a leading spokesman for the Slovenian community until the time of his death. The epitaph on his tombstone in St. Paul’s Cemetery (Euclid, Ohio) simply states, “Here lies Joseph Turk, born 1838... died 1903... First Slovenian Settler.”
Beginnings — New Church and School
A young Slovene who came to study in America was Vitus Hribar. In 1893 he was ordained a Catholic priest in the Cleveland diocese and was asked to organize a parish for the Slovenes by then Cleveland Bishop I. F. Horstriank.
By 1894 land was purchased in the vicinity of E. 60 and E. 61 Sts., off St. Clair Avenue. A wooden church structure was completed and blessed prior to December, 1894.
A wooden structure was built in 1902 to accommodate the children of this growing parish to function as an elementary school. The Sisters of Notre Dame (S.N.D.) were assigned as educators for the new St. Vitus School.
Transition Period The parish did, however, encounter growing pains. The parishes in Slovenia at this time received financial support from the State. This was not the case in America. Bitterness developed	between
parishioners and Father
Hribar on the question of parishioners supporting a parochial school. Eventually, Father Hribar received an assignment in 1907 to Saint Augustine’s in Barberton, Ohio and Father Bartholomew J. Ponikvar was assigned to become the second pastor at St. Vitus.
Period of Growth
Under Father Ponikvar’s guidance and leadership new school and church edifices were erected. A three-story school was built in 1912 at the cost of approximately $100,000 to handle nearly one thousand students.
The second construction, a new church in 1932 was more difficult to accomplish. Two difficulties arose. One was the Great Depression, and many parishioners were opposed to the demolition of the old wooden church.
Both difficulties were overcome and after two years of construction, work on the new edifice was completed and blessed on November 30, 1932. The church building cost $350,000.
New parish organizations developed during Father Ponikvar’s tenure: The Holy Name Society, Young Ladies Sodality, Lira Singing Society, Triglav Dramatic Guild, Orels Club (Physical fitness group), and many other organizations. Father Ponikvar served as pastor for 45 years at St. Vitus until his death in 1952.
Decline and Rebirth
The St. Clair area was beginning to change dramatically in the early 1950s. Many families were moving from the area. The school enrollment was declining to less than 400 students. World War II had, however, changed not only the face of Europe, but also St. Vitus parish.
Many Slovenian people were being banished from Slovenia by the then ruling Communist party (i.e., Tito/Partisans) due to their religious beliefs. Approximately 10-20,000 Slovenians were executed by the Partisans during and after World War II. Some of those banished Slovenians found a new home in the St. Clair area.
A Saturday Slovenian language school was instituted in 1953. A drama and singing groups were either renewed or initiated, thanks to the new immigrants.
New Leadership
The guiding pastor during the 1950s and 1960s was Monsignor Louis B. Baznik. During his pastorship, an auditorium-gymnasium complex and school convent were constructed in 1956 and 1963 respectively.
A school library was also renovated and modernized in the late 1960s.
Enrollment reached approximately 700 students by 1967.
From 1968 to Present
Approximately 17 years have passed since the Diamond Jubilee (75th year) anniversary of the founding of St. Vitus in 1968. Monsignor Baznik has since retired from his active priesthood duties and currently resides at Borromeo Seminary in Wickliffe, O.
St. Vitus has seen three new pastors since 1968: Father Rudolph Praznik (1968-1975), Father A. Edward Pevec (1975-1979), and Father Joseph P. Boznar (1979 - present).
Father Praznik died in 1975 while Father Pevec was elevated to auxiliary bishop, eastern region, Cleveland diocese in 1979. He was the first priest of Slovenian descent to attain the bishop’s office in the diocese of Cleveland.
A new wave of immigrants reached the shores of Lake Erie during the late 1960s and early 1970s. These people were of Croatian descent and some became parishioners at St. Vitus. This migration, plus the interest of second, third and fourth generation Slovenians reactivivated interest in Slovenian culture and language. For example, the Slovenian men’s singing group, Fantje na Vasi, was organized in the late 1970s by many young men from St. Vitus and St. Mary (Collin-wood) churches.
The start of upgrading the physical properties of St. Vitus parish was initiated by Father A. Edward Pevec and has con-
tinued by Father Boznar. The following improvements since the mid 1970s have been made.
•	New carpeting and lighting system in St. Vitus School.
•	Total insulation of St. Vitus School Auditorium and Convent.
•	New Charcol insulated windows and doors at St. Vitus.
•	Acquisition and improvement of an adjacent lot to St. Vitus.
•	Purchase of 10 computers and remodeling of classroom as a computer laboratory room.
The total capital outlay for upgrading these capital improvements have amounted to approximately $400,000. These capital improvements aside, St. Vitus parish is an anchor in the St. Clair area committed toward improving the quality of life in this near northeast neighborhood in Cleveland.
Other programs such as the
yearly Lenten Renewal, a Free Medical Health Fair, F00 Pantry, 40-hour devotion, Marian devotions (May anc* October), plus others serve the spirtual and human needs of St. Vitus.

Miklavž), the colorful blessing of food on Holy Saturday, the “butara presentation on Palm Sundaysinging Slovenian Marian songs on Easter Sunday an Christmas. These are but a fe'v examples of Slovenian expressions at St. Vitus.
St. Vitus is approaching l$j years of existence as a vita and vibrant institution 1° Greater Cleveland. Only through the dedication an willingness of the parishioners of St. Vitus will it continue to have a deep influence on no only itself but also the Greater Cleveland and surrounding ireas.

The architectural style is Lombard-Roman, using pale y*11^ l alston brick. The dimensions of the church are 141 feet long 3 100 feet wide with the parish rectory on its west side.	^
A uniqueness of this church are the two twin Romanes^ Towers that reach approximately 110 feet in the sky.

The church building cost approximately $350,000 and ^ built in 1932. Measured in today’s dollar value, the appr°*l,n J() cost to duplicate St. Vitus Church and Rectory would amoun approximately $3-$5 million.

260 Students Call St. Vitus A Place of Opportunity

St. Vitus School is home to 260 students from kindergarten through eighth grade. The goal of the staff is to unite with parents in forming a child in the Catholic Faith and in a tradition of academic excellence. Daily religious classes, weekly class or school liturgies, celebration of liturgical seasons and feasts, instruction by St. Mary Seminary students and varied opportunities for Christian service enable the students to integrate their knowledge and practice of Faith and make a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and His Church.
A highly certified staff motivates students to master the basic skills of language, arts, mathematics, social studies, science, art, music, and physicl education. Computer literacy, recently mandated by the State of Ohio, will be integrated into the curriculum from first through eighth grade. This will be possible as a new Computer Room has recently been completed.
Cognitive Abilities Test is administered to students in Grades 1,3,5, and 7. This test is designed to measure the child’s capability to acquire knowledge and skills.
The Iowa Test of Basic Skills is administered to Grades 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. This test measures the pupil’s mastery of skills to date. High schools use the 7th grade Iowa score when evaluating an 8th grade student’s possible acceptance to the high school.
Auxiliary services provided by state or federal funding include speech and language therapy, remedial instruction, and psychological and guidance services.
The students are often privileged to participate in planned educational and cultural experiences at museums, theaters, concerts, libraries, and government buildings.
Extra-curricular activities include Servers, Drama Club, Ski Club, CYO Soccer, School newspaper, and intramural sports.
A warm lunch is prepared in the cafeteria in St. Vitus Auditorium by a staff of employees and volunteers on each school day.
A Finance Committee also exists to examine the financial condition of the school and offer remedies. The Committee reviews applications for financial assistance. Specific stipulations for application to this Committee are stated in the St. Vitus School Parent Handbook.
In recent years the school, community has chosen a theme by which to coordinate the efforts of students, teachers, parents, and priests in a unified and spirited spiritual goal. This year the
goal was “REACH OUT” and challenged all to reach out to others in the spirit of Jesus who reached out to live and die for us. Each month was dedicated to reaching out to a segment of society to try to meet their needs. Various months were devoted to reaching out to the elderly, the poor, family members, the parish, people of other races, and people of our neighborhood. Among the
projects that were undertaken to “live” our theme were inviting the elderly to Mass and breakfast, inviting “moms for the Morning” and “Dads for Donuts”, painting the “Rec Center”, inviting senior citizen neighbors to an afternoon Bingo Party, sponsoring a rummage sale for the missions, and planting flowers throughout the neighborhood for beautifying neighbors’ yards.

Taking lime out from a busy school schedule, three young ladies were completing a visual display of this year’s “Reach Out” program by St. Vitus students to many elderly persons in the St. Clair area. The program showed how young and old could help one another.
Showing how private enterprise can work through the school system Stane Kuhar instructs Eighth Grade students on the basics of business, via Project Business. AmeriTrust Co. N.A. enabled Mr. Kuhar to teach at St. Vitus. The result was completion of three projects by the students. With the completed Computer Room, next year’s class will be able to use new tools to solve every day problems.
Mrs. Mary Petelin and Mrs. Zalka Likozar take a break from a rehearsal for a Mother’s Day program with some of the students who attend the Saturday morning Slovenian Language School. In existence since the early 1950s, the language school exposes the Slovenian culture and language to many Greater Clevelanders of Slovenian descent.

Sezatoarea
The Romanian artistic dance group “Sezatoarea” was organized 26 years ago in the Greater Cleveland area. It is one of the oldest and most active Romanian cultural groups in the Cleveland area.
The purpose of Sezatoarea at its inception and at the present time, is to cultivate, preserve, and promote the Romanian songs, dances traditions, and culture in the United States. It is independent of any church or lodge. Membership includes any Romanian of a multitude of faiths interested in the Romanian heritage.
Sezatoarea has performed from large national conventions and affairs to small programs in nursing homes or golden age groups.
A record was produced in 1964 by Sezatoarea. A second printing was made in 1983 and is still being sold by members of this group.

The Showcase Show Band
The Showcase show band features a three man horn section, a guitar, bass guitar, and drummer. Showcase can play any format of music ranging from jazz to rock — to polka.
The band recreates mostly, however, the music from the Big Band era through the rock hits of today. Add some polkas and country music, and you have one of the most ver-
satile bands in the Cleveland area.
Showcase will be performing at the St. Vitus Summerfest in 1985 to please the hearts of old and young, playing many songs that can be danced.

The Cleveland Junior Tamburitzans take their name from the Tamburitza, a multi-stringed, lute like musical instrument utilized by the Croatian people.
Attired in beautiful, authentic, native folk costumes of Croatia, the Tammies perform lively village dances, and sing in the lusty voices of peasant folk at a festival.
Music and dance have a language which transcends national boundaries. The words may be strange to your ears, but the music will speak to your heart. The invitation to the dance is quite clear. It cries; come share our joy, our love of living.
In 1979 the Cleveland Junior Tamburitzans celebrate twenty years of music and song. Our unique contribution to the cultural life of our counfry is that we have provided the descendants of immigrants a pride in the rich folk culture of their past, while insuring future
generations the rich benefits of our cultural heritage. With thirty young, talented, and enthusiastic performers we present a diversified cultural and musical experience. Each year in October a new show is produced for the annual concert. Throughout the
year this show is performed at many civic and cultural events throughout the United States and Canada. Twice the show has been taken to Europe, and for the last ten years the Cleveland Junior Tamburitzans have added authentic dances from the Balkans to their annual programs. Mr. Jerome Elbicki, president and choreographer of Syrena, has had extensive training in Polish dance both in the United States and in Poland. He is a former member of the Alliance College “Kujawiaki” and “Krakus” Polish Folk Dance Ensemble of Krakow, Poland.
Syrena is currently preparing for dance competition next year. They have been accepted to participate in the International Polish Folk Dance Competition held tri-annually in Rzeszow, Poland. Syrena is the only group from Cleveland, as well as in the state of Ohio, selected to participate at this competition.

One of their most memorable performances was in the opera “Bartered Bride” presented by the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Dedication of the Czech Chapel in the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. Their latest performance was at the American Sokol Slet held in Chicago in June of this year.

The Slovenian community in ' the Greater Cleveland area is fortunate to have so many ; diverse and active cultural \ groups performing year round to the pleasure of many persons in Greater Cleveland. One of these groups is the dance folklore group “Kres.” Kres was organized over 30 years ago after the arrival of many immigrants from Slovenia at the end of World War II.
Kres has performed not only in the Greater Cleveland area but also in cities such as Pitt- ,, sburgh, Milwaukee, and in Europe. The group visited Italy, Austria, and Slovenia when it performed in Europe.
Many of the current members of Kres are second, third, and fourth generation Slovenians in America. For some, the opportunity to perform in a dance group is a manner whereby they can express their feelings and emotions about the Slovenian culture. For others it is a way where language, dance, and song merge into one format and can be experienced in a dance number.
The members not only perform various traditional Slovenian dances but also in- >■ elude a number of American western dances.
The current directors of Kres are Breda Lončar, Bernie Ovsenik, and Veronika Žnidaršič. Additional dances taught to younger performers are by Jane Jaksic.
Many of the members in Kres have also been educated in the Slovenian language at either St. Vitus or St. Mary (Collin-wood) Slovenian Language Schools.
Kres invites any person of Slovenian background to join this well-known nationality dance group and provide an aspect of the Slovenian culture in America in the future.
Alpine Sextet
The Alpine Sextet is a Cleveland based band made 3 up of young musicians who specialize in the European “Avsenik” sound.
The group performs regularly at the famous Hofbrau Haus, which is known to furnish only the finest quality food, drink and entertainment.
Since the band was formed in 1975, it has delighted audiences in many places including Chicago, New York, Washington, Toronto, and Pittsburgh. In Cleveland the Sextet has appeared several times on the nationally syndicated television program “Polka Varieties,’ as well as on the new “Polka Time U.S.A.” show. The musician-ship of the Alpine Sextet has also been in demand as accompaniment to many other local performing groups such as Korotan and Fantje na Vasi.
In addition, the band recently began to perform — as a sideline — jazz and pop tunes at the “House of Swing” in Cleveland	Heights
demonstrating once again the versatility of each musician.
