Mestni župan in mestni odborniki so ga pričakovali pred mestno hišo in so mu čestitali na uspehu Nemčije tekom zadnjih dni. Buerckel, dosedanji upravitelj Avstrije in novi administrator Moravske. Berlin, 17. marca. Rutenijo so zasedli včeraj Madžari. New York, 17. marca. Kakor hitro ffse Nemci polastili češke, zlasti glavnega mesta Prage, so izdale nemške oblasti drastične odrtedbe. Prebivalstvo je zgubilo skoro vse svoje civilne svobodščine. Vsi javni shodi so prepoveda-1 ni. To bo prenešeno v nemško državno banko. Potovanje Roosevelta Washington, 17. marca. Predsednik Roosevelt bo skoro ves mesec april odsoten iz glavnega mesta. 29. marca odpotuje v toplice v Warm Springs, Ala., kjer ostane do 10. aprila, nakar bo imel na dveh zamorskih univerzah govore. Dne 14. aprila bo v Mt. Vernonu, kjer bodo praznovali 150. obletnico, ko je bil George Washington izvoljen prvim predsednikom. Pozneje odpotuje na svoje posestvo v Hyde Park, kjer ostane do 29. aprila, ko pride v New York, na odtvo-ritev svetovne razstave. Preklicane licence Državne oblasti v Columbusu so odvzele štirim gostilničarjem v Clevelandu njih gostilniške licence, ker so gostilničarji prodajali ob nedeljah. Namestnice 1;o: Mary Stanovnik, Cecilija Skrbeč in Dorothy Strniša. Vsa dela so končana in sedaj se oblasti v New Yorku čudijo, kdo bo plačal. Sedaj so — svobodni in nevisni Čehi in Slovaki v — nemški sužnjosti. Naj vrag vzame take demokracije kot jo predstavljati Francija in Anglija. Zda.i nastane vprašanje: zakaj je ata župan odbral take? . . . Seveda, kakopak, kar pomagaj. . . . Z lopato bi rad kopal? No, kar daj. Tukaj imaš lopato. . . . Ne, ne, Jimmy, ne tam. Tam so vsajene čebulice tulipanov. ... . . . No, no, saj nisem nič hudega mislil. "Kaj ? Da ne boš kamenja pobiral? Grablje bi rad, praviš? No, pa vzemi grablje in lepo grabi, kot to dela atek. Pazi, kako atek to dela. ... Da sem siten? Nič nisem siten, ampak prav de-!aj, ti pravim. "Samokolnico bi rad vozil? Bo menda pretežka zate? No, če ne odnehaš, pa naj bo. Ampak pazi, Ja je ne zvrneš. Hej! . ." Torej vidite, kako težko pričakujem tistih časov, ko mi bo prišel pomagat na vrt naš naga-jivček Jimmy. Jaka Kako kaj politika? Cleveland, O. — Danes se ustavimo doma in poglejmo našega župana Burtona. Saj on ni tako bedast, kakor nekateri mislijo. No, saj sedaj so časi zapravljanja! Govoril sem s prijateljem in ga vprašal, kaj on misli, ali bo dobil Burton zopet tistih devet milijonov. On hiti k njima in vzklikne: —Bodite pogumni, rešil vas bom! On objame Natalijo. Felsinga ni zadel nobeden kamen, nobeden hlod in prišel je do portala. Tu ga sprejme navdušena A množica. * Felsing se opoteče in omahne * v naročje poveljnika gasilcev. Ti ' ga odpravijo skupno z Natalijo 1 v bolnico. Ječa se je zrušila. Pod svoji- * mi razvalinami je pokopala sto- ' tine bednih in nesrečnih žen. Ljudje so bili razjarjeni in pripravljeni na . vse. —Sedaj, Ivan Kardov, — so kričali, ko so prišli pod njegova okna, — sedaj za te ni rešitve ! The Ferfolias drew a bye but will resume play next week. Serenaders of Newburg show was a huge success. The Serenaders Glee Club presented their much talked about Minstrel Show for the Business Men's Club of the Typewriters Ass'n at the Lake Shore Hotel Tuesday night, March 14. The Penthouse where the show was held was entirely too small for the attendance. Incidentally there were approximately 200 members of the Association and guests of the Club present. Your correspondent will not be exaggerating when he says that not only was the show a financial success but showed a tremendous opportunity for the future. Because talk for another show at the hotel was under way 'before the show was over. One cf the biggest surprises for the Serenaders was when the President of the Association said that they are planning a short program over the air. If the plans materialize the Serenaders will be part of the show. Saturday, April 29, the Serenaders will again perform before what we hope will be a capacity crowd for the show will be held at the Slov. Nat'l Home in Maple Heights where many of the good friends of the Serenadei-s live. "Watch the pace of the Serenaders." ED PLANISEK REPORTING . . • Last week's game decided who will share in the play-offs due in a few weeks. The Ferfolia Furniture five is in by virtue of their winning that game which was their one and only chance. As this one day in the year is set aside for prayer and meditation, it is an opportunity which all should take advantage. Mass will start at 8:30 and all those who receive Communion will be served breakfast by the nuns. There will (be no charge for this; only your donations. The devotions will last until 4:30. Let's try to make this a one-hundred per cent attendance of the Young Ladies Sodality of St. Mary's Parish. Don't forget to keep filling' those Mission socks. Even if you don't wear size ten, the socks will hold more than just the six and the sevens. "PEN AND SCROLL" As the first edition of the news-sheet is now in your hands, you, the readers, are its judges. The Young Ladies Sodality and the Young Men's Holy Name committees have worked and tried very hard with your interests in mind, to please you, the reader. We hope that this undertaking does come up to your expectations. As it was said before we will be only too glad to receive any criticisms which will be of some good to us in improving the newssheet. If you liked our gossip columns, especially those mentioned in them, we hope you will take it as just good fun, for that was the way it was intended. A warning was given quite awhile back to be on your good behavior. Better take it to heart because now you have a:i idea of how it looks in black and white. We're out to get news and plan it to be good news. You may have noticed that a few of the articles are not signed by their writers. This is not because they are afraid of the consequences, we assure you. but merely an over sight. We do hope, however, that by the next issue they will have gotten up enough courage to sign them Stan Brodnik is having quite a time selecting a good pen name. He just can't find one that will disguise him good enough. Not that Stan's failure to sign Parish Pickups was an indication of anything. O'f course not, we wouldn't dream of anything like that, but we will think about it, Stan. The first edition was a complementary one, but future editions will be at a suubscription rate of twenty-fie cents a year. Those who are not members of either the Young Ladies Sodality or the Young Men's Holy Name and wish to purchase copies can receive them from either Joe Ko zar or Frances Tomazic. There will be a different rate for these persons. We hope you have enjoyed this first edition as much as the committees have enjoyed preparing it for you. VITUS! The Young Men's Holy Name Society wishes to take this opportunity to extend its congratulations to the St. Vitus senior basketball team in winning the Northeast CYO Championship. Although you boys lost out in the finals, to Holy Name, for the City C. Y. O. championship, you put up a grand fight. So, once again, congratulations from the St. Mary's Holy Name Society. NOTES ANB QUERIES Where is Johnny Mervar keeping himself lately? He hasn't gone South for spring training, has he? Another Mervar, Frank, hasn't been seen much lately, either. Frank recently became an insurance man. Hoping you a lot cf luck in your- new field, Frank. . . . Henry Bokal was confined to bed this week with influenza. Hoping you a speedy recovery, Henry. . . . Birthday congratulations are in order for Joe Zorko, who is celebrating his birthday this coming Tuesday. Mike Anzlin was . seen sporting a nice new Hamburg last Sunday morning. O. organizations. At a recent meeting he wanted the boys to join the C. I. O. instead of the C. Y. O. More Notes and Queries again next week. The Younger Set at St. Christine's Ye Olde Schoole Myron Mlachak had the entire 3rd grade in a dither qf excitement the other day. Suddenly it was whispered all around that he's got a nice little pony. Led by Eddie ' Baehr and Jackie Posch a big crowd surrounded him at recess time to get the real low-down on the matter. And sure enough, he told them that it's all too true. Maryanne Swartzmiller quickly made reservations with Myron lor one of the first rides; Eleanore Zimperman started jumping all over the place in excited anticipation of learning how to be an honest to goodness cowgirl; Melvin Plut informed all and sundry of his big sixshooter banging from atop the saddle; the only one who listened and said nctning was Frankie Vidmar. "Say, Myron, just where have you got that peny?" said he with evident skepticism. "Why, my uncle is raising him fcr me in Europe," Myron informs his gaping audience. Which, naturally, busted up the meeting and everybody started playing marbles again with many a disgusted "Aw, gee whiz." But, don't make a wrong estimate about these third graders! They have a high class percentage of honor students among them; and, what's mere, highest individual averages in the entire school Namely and to wit: there is Mary Ann Budan with 98%, Alice Kuhar, Marie Baitt, Anthony Miklaucic, Richard Fox, and Johnny Golinar. While the following are the first grade stars: Norene Kallmann, Dennis Mlachak, John Kinkopf, Irene I-Iccevar, Eddie Potokar, Tommy Luz.ar, Virgil Knettel and Marlene Kolovich. Boys and girls, we are pi cud of you and congratulate you on your accomplishments. Keep up the good work! And may there be more who will be inspired to work harder and join this select group during next six weeks. We, naturally, also felicitate the parents of these star pupils. May they always bs ycur joy and pride! Among the Grads Do ycu still remember Rudy Cin-co? He was one of our second graduating class in 1932. He continued his starring at Euclid Central and then turned his steps to the campus of one of our Ohio Universities. He's still there now nearing the end of his college studies. Keep him in sight! Rudy is sure to make his mark. He always was a dogged sticker to whatever he set his mind on. Then there's our present "popularity queen," Irene Jasbeck, '37, who is not only doing well in her studies at Shore High but also manages to find spare moments for advanced voice culture. Which makes- her appearance a treat on any program as witnesseth her numbers on the recent making her the leader of our 217 pupils; Rita Kolovich 97.4% Maryanne Swartzmiller 96.2%; Joan Rammel 96%; Helen Kuhar 96%; Mary Anne Repasky 95.8%, and Eleanore Zimperman 90%. And on many occasions we also find this group very polite as a whole, gentlemanly and ladylike. For all of which we congratulate them and their teacher! All of which leaves us on a precarious perch. We must therefore, hasten to tell ycu of our honor etudents in the three grades still un-menticned; for, we've heard dangerous grumblings from somewhere right after last Saturday's column appeared in this neighborhood. The fourth graders, who take particular pride in themselves because they are away from the "hoi poloi" in a building of their own, and whose meticulously clean classroom must be seen to be appreciated, present the following names on the honor roll: Ethel Langa, Aloysius Nemec, Mar-jorie Sternberg, Jane Tomsic, Dorothy Gole, and Helen Kotnik. Pride of the second grade are Lillian Gus-tincic .Eileen Knific, Wilma Mrsnik, Alumni Variety know, when Irene seemed to us to have been in exceptional voice. And, did you hear her on a recent Sunday over the air waves, when she was presented as a ccloist on the Slovenian program? Keep It up, Irene! We'll all be proud cf you when we'll be able to even see you in our parlors through our television sets. And, youse guys and gals, did you knew the list of our married grads is growing, too? Jennie Ule, of course, deserted single blessedness quite some time ago to become Mrs. Carl Kidd. Cradle lullabys are no longer a novelty to her. More recently, Jennie Globokar, also of the class of '31 became Mrs. Anthony Dragolich. And not to let the ladies outdo the men, Andrew Fink, '32, decided to uphold their honor by bravely deciding to join the ranks of the benedicts. This, of course, is not exactly recent history since it all happened during the long months of our columnar silence. But, he did come around recently, three months ago to be exact, all beaming and smiling with the news that he and his Rosie, nee Golinar, i got a little bundle from heaven. Andrew Kenneth is the name we gave the heir-apparent on Christmas day. Oh, gee whizz, we almost forgot to mention Anne Cercek, '31, whom every body knows for, yea, these many years as Mrs. Frank Petrich. All of which makes us wonder just who will "flcp" next! Please, do not forget that poor Lucinka Trskan, '36, is still sics at her home. Go and cheer her up a bit once in a while. She'll be ever so grateful. And we again noticed the other day Mary Smrtnik doing something which we thought was very nice. She had an off-day from work and edified us all by coming to mass on a weekday! If you, and you, and YOU, who simply don't know what to do with your time because of lack of emplcyment, would only know how good it feels to notice you put into practice some of the principles of the education we gave you, you wouldn't hesitate to surprise us pleasantly a little cftener like Mary did. Or, let's put it this way! You're out cf wcrk for months and months; you'e gone all over town and left ycur applications with exactly zero in success; in fact, you've tried everything! Except one thing. During your schccl days you were taught about the power oft prayer. Have you given that a try? What , about making a novena in honor of St. Joseph, the .patron saint of workers? Tomorrow is his feast; why not start that no-vena tomorrow and then come to Mass every morning for nine days to get his intercession for obtaining a job. Ask Johnny Zupančič about it; he tried something like it a few weeks age and got partial success before his novena was over. Meetings You, Holy Name Juniors, remember your monthly meeting on Monday night. Get ready for it by coming with loads of ideas for interesting activities among the fellows. Ncr should the Sodality girls forget their meeting on Tuesday night after the regular lenten devotion. The proper thing, of course, will be to attend that first in homage to the heavenly Queen and then come down fcr the business and social session. Choir Static by Irene Mlach and Mary Gombach, the "Two Sour Notes" Wonder, if you all know that the mixed choir is preparing strenuously for a concert on Sunday, April 23? Yes, we are! And we'll be able to present some new faces in the lineup cn the stage. Clarence Hupar Joe Jarc and Edmund Krenz joined cur male contigent during recent months; while Helen Kosten helped fill out the ranks of sopranos, depleted somewhat by some who care more apparently, for own glory amidst godless association than for the glory of God. Following items prove that all is not hard work at rehearsals. Edmund Krenz used a lull to outline his Easter outfit thus: "I'm getting- a pink suit with green polka-dots, scctch plaid socks and a tie, purple shirt and yellow shoes." If he means it there will be riot on the choir loft on Easter Sunday. Have a heart, Ed! We got to have someone to do the singing . . . Mrs. Mary Gerl, the organist, wanted to know about the whereabouts of Joe Jarc when Helen Kosten obligingly informed, "I think he's in bed having a cold One of our altos (for once we won't tell just who) wondered why she wasn't singing like the other ones; inspection by her friends revealed that she was using music sheets marked "Tenor and Bass" .... Ox-like soulfulness was clouding Irene's dreamy eyes when she turned to Mary and said, pointing to music page, "Gee, Mary, but I would like to sing this song." Noticing that a blank page was being abstractedly pointed to Mary ,she encouraged obligingly, "Go ahead; you might as well. It's the only kind of songs you know, anyway." Varieties—the Spice of Life by Joe and Rudy It's noticed on Goller Ave. that A1 JTanchar has been coming home late these balmy spring nights. A1 says it is ping-pong which keeps him up. Neighbors wonder whether, his heart's accelerated bing-bonging isn't the real explanation. . . . Jce Jarc has been confining himself to his home rather more than was his wont. He claims it's a slight feer; we suspect its either fear of reprisals from his recent barbs' victims or a phobia he succumbed to after viewing the movie, "The Son of Frankenstein."—(Joe, ya dope, why don't you consult the list of movies, not recommended for children; that's why we put it up in the hallway every week so you kids can look it up before deciding what movies to go to.) Frank Laurich always proudly claims that Dannie Cupid has no terror for him, thus he gradually built up a reputation as one of the mere confirmed unattached local bachelors. But ,he was seen, on a recent bargain day, standing in front of a big store gazing attentively at a display of bridal trousseaus and apparently waiting for his . . . er . . . awk . . . companion to rejoin him. Better wear a disguise next time, Weazer! One of the social groups you never hear about is what could be called the Saturday-night Poker Club. Soda-jerker par excellent, Pete Petrovich and his booing companion Frankie Skrobot could give you more details as they are even somewhat annoyed at times by these birds who "poke around" in their drugstore without offering any prospect for business. Sports by Weazer The completely disorganized Seniors dropped another one; this time by a score of 41 to 28 to the Noble Club. It actually seems that this was the low spot of the rapidly waning season. At least we hope that they'll pull together during the remaining few games, forget quibbling and dis-senticn and start playing as the fans know they can if they want to. Last night, Wednesday, they took the measure of St. Mary's quintet, which may bs the spark needed to put them intc the good graces of their many followers. The Seconds added another scalp tc their string of victories. 26-23 was ihe final count in an exciting tussle with the boys from St Theresa's church. Last six weeks certainly brought a wonderful improvement in the play of our intermediates. With this y-ar's1 experience under their belts they should prcve a tough team fcr next year's opponents. The girls played two games and won them both. On Wednesday night cf last week they overwhelmed St. Emerich's by 33-15. Marie Reclier, Lillian Bczeglav and Marianne Intlhar played a great game. Emma Su-pance seemed to be off her usual game. It appeared that pciarily too concerned 8 curl in her hair. The ^ was also a run-away. ^ were simply snowed UIlde ]3 score. YOUNG SLOVENES OF SLOVENIAN HOME Being • quite a while since any news of the Young Slovenes of Slovenian Home has appeared on this page, I am writing a few lines to put you up to date on the activities of the club. The Young Slovenes, as you all know, are a group of young men who are working fcr improvement of the Slovene Home on Holmes Ave. As you all remember the Y. S. sponsored a series of Friday night dances which were discontinued during Lent. The Y. S. are again appearing on the Social Calendar with a dance. You will all probably remember the Easter Parade Dance sponsored by this club last Easter. It was one of the most successful dances of the season. The Y. S. are making an Easter. Dance a annual affair. For music the Young Slovenes have booked the most popular orchestra in Collinwood. It is the very well known and much loved orchestra of Frankie Yankovic and his boys. For an entertaining evening come to the Young Slovenes dance on Easter Sunday. Time: 8 p. m. Place: the Slovene Home on Holmes Avenue. Closing with the pleasant thought of seeing you all Easter Sunday. Committee -O- Irma Kalan-O'Hern: SYMPHONY CONCERT The Jugoslav (Slovene) Club of the International Institute is sponsoring a symphony concert to be given by Friends of Music Symphony Orchestra, with Clarence S. Metcalf, director, to be held at the Slovene Auditorium on St. Clair Avenue, Sat urday evening, March 25th, at 8:15 p. m. The assisting artists participating in the program are Jeanette Perdan-Juttner, soprano, Louis Grdina, baritone, Annette Werwage, pianist, and Independent Zarja Male Chorus. The Friends of Music Symphony Orchestra was organized by Mr. Met calf Secretary-Treasurer of the Cleve land Fublic Library, six years ago for the purpose of providing a place for high school graduates to keep up their interest in music, principally for the enjoyment of, playing g~d music. Many former members of this orchestra have graduated to large, symphony orchestras, music supervisors, and a number of them are now in prominent musical schools in the country. As a result of the organization of this group, there has sprung the Cleveland Women's Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestra. Mrs. Juttner's first appearance at the Slovene Auditorium since her return from aboard was when she so dramatically portrayed the role of Micaela in the opera, "Carmen," given by the Federal Music Project on Friday, March 17th. Accompanied by the sixty piece orchestra she will sing "The Voice and the Flute," by John W. Densmore. This song is a musical fantasy wherein there is portrayed a wood-land flute and a voice. The flute hears a voice and is so enchanted by it that he follows it wherever it gees. When the voice soared to the skies, the flute followed, for what else could he do? Mr. Grdina is also well known for participating at numerous concerts and Slovene radio programs. He will sing the very difficult, dramatic "Prologue to Pagliacci," by Leoncavallo. When Leoncavallo finished the opera, "Pagliacci," a famous baritone in the cast complained that he did not have enough to do, so the Prologue was written especially for his benefit, and has become the second most popular number of the opera. In the opera, Tonio, the clown appears and asks, "May I?" Stepping before the footlights he bows and explains to the audience that sometimes the actors have to play the part of clowns when their hearts are really breaking. Tonio then disappears and the curtain rises on the opera. Miss Werwage, pianist, is a pupil of Franklyn Carnahan, well known teacher.'Accompanied by the orchestra, she will play the brilliant "Fantasy" by Franz Liszt, which is taken from the No. 14 Rhapsody. This is a fantasy on Hungarian folk melodies. The dark, swarthy gypsies swarming in the outskirts of the village, and at evening practising their free, lawless dance, or singing their plaintive songs, inspired Liszt to become the one distinctive national composer of Hungary.
