First Pennant Winners Had Colorful Caps: The Chicago White Stockings, winners of the National League’s first pennant race in 1876, presented a colorful appearance, with each player wearing a cap of a different color. Catchers Catching Little Louie: Jim Pagliaroni’s all-round catching has improved with his hitting this spring. The still youthful Red Sox catcher achieved considerance distinction in the May 6 double-header against the White Sox. He tossed out Luis Aparicio of the White Sox trying to steal second in each game. Pagliaroni has now pegged out the American League’s base stealing leader three times during the first eight meetings of the Boston and Chicago clubs. According to Aparicio, Elston Howard of the Yankees is the only catcher to throw him out three times in one season before. That was last year. On the morning of May 20, before 9 o’clock Mass, six (6) of the Cubs of this wonderful pack will receive their Pavuli Dei Award. It will be a very memorial occasion for the Cubs Moms and Dads of these fine “lads,” and I being involved in this great movement am indeed very proud, as all having any part in the interest of our boys, should be. The Pack is a great one. The boys who do not belong really miss out on great training, especially in building character. So why dor.’t you and You take advantage and join. The recipients of this award who have been preparing for many months, and very deserving of this great honor are namely: —Cub Scouts Ronald and Donald Snyder, Alex ar.d Henrik Bonutti, David Kern, and Anthony Palcic. To you “Cubs of the Day” may I say—when you go up before the altar to receive your award, do so with sincerity in your hearts and a prayer on your lips. Thank God for this privilege. May you live up to all it stands for. Now — what is the Pavuli Dei Award? What is expected of a Cub Scout, before being eligible? Very few in my opinion know. The House wont back to work last week, following the Easter Recess, and passed three bills which had been considered and recommended by the House Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce. One proposal, H. R. 6949, will eliminate a loophole in the Natural Gas Act which now bars the Federal Power Commission from suspending proposed rate changes with respect to sales of natural gas destined ultimately for industrial use only. It would put such proposed changes on the same footing as sales for consumer use. The second bill, H. R. 8031, would authorize the Federal Communications Commission to require manufacturers of television sets to equip their sets to receive UHF signals (ultra high frequency, 70 channels) as well as the present 12 channels in the VHP (very high frequency) portion of the radio spectrum. The Committee feels that the use of more UHF channels will enable the American people to enjoy more and better television service. Because of the scarcity of UHF receivers and therefore the limited number of listeners, there are only 103 UHF stations In our country. Only about 16 per cent of the television sets in the United States are equipped to receive UHF signals at present. By requiring all new sets to be capable of receiving both VHP and UHF stations, the Committee hopes to encourage the growth of UHF stations. The Committee reported that an all-channel TV set will cost about $25 more than a comparable VHF-only set. It also stressed the need for UHF stations to promote the development of educational television. The third bill, H. R. 1KM0, is to bring into being a private rather than a government corporation, which would be the U. S. participant in a global satellite communications system. This is a system of the future to provide more eff“-ti"o ra'-1-' television, telephone, and telegraph conununication on a worldwide basis. While we were debating this bill, the Air P’orce announced it had successfully bounced a television signal from Camp Parks, California to Westford, Massachusetts, by using Echo I, a passive reflector satellite. The legislation passed by the House seems to be an appropriate vehicle to speed U. S. participation in the developing field of space communications by establishing machinery through which existing carriers and other private individuals and groups may play a vital role. ***** >l> CIVIL SERVICE EXAM FOR AIR FORCE ACADEMY A preliminary Civil Service examination for the U. Into this biographical and dramatic narrative are woven three of the Grimms’ famous stories, “The Dancing Princess,” “The Cobbler and the Elves,” and “The Singing Bone.” A top list of Hollywood favorites headline the cast of both the biographical and the folk tale scripts. Laurence Harvey, one of the industry’s most popular leading men, portrays the role of Wilhelm Grimm, the imaginative dreamer. Karl Boehm, famous Austrian star, who made his American screen debut in “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” is the more practical Brother Jacob. Internationally famous stage and screen star Claire Bloom flew from Lor,don for her role as Dorothea, Wilhelm’s wife. Other popular members of the cast are Walter Slezak, Barbara Eden, Oscar Homolka and Arnold Stang. None the less star studded are three Grimm stories. Yvette Mi-mieux, Russ Tamblyn, Jim Backus, Beulah Bondi and Clinton 'Stind-berg star in the delightful “The Dancing Princess.” The whimsical cobbler of “The Cobbler and the Elves” is played by Laurence Harvey who, as he tells the story, is transformed into the kindly little man who neglects his cobbling to bring happiness to five small orphans. “The Singing Bone” is an exciting story of knights and dragons and stars the famous British comedian Terry-Thomas with the equally popular American comic Buddy Hackett. This first of the Cinerama storytelling productions was directed by Henry Levin, who took over the biographical script, and Producer George Pal, who helmed the fairy tale sequences. “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm” hits the zenith of 10 successful years of Cinerama, during which time more than. 150 milion theater goers shared the unique experience of sight and sound. MeGaha A/-~ " Cleveland, Ohio — Although but five v/eeks of the playing season have elapsed, freshman manager Mel MeGaha of the Cleveland India;.s already has displayed facets of patience and courage that augur v/ell for the Tribe. Best example is the manner in which he has handled the club’s center field situation caused by the trade last summer which sent Jim Piersall to Washington for Disk Donovan, Gene Green and Jim Mahoney. He believed that his best candidate to replace Piersall was young Ty Cline whose two seasons in the Cleveland farm organization had been most impressive ones. r~~ ~ l, t j v-------- Ty Clin« The ex-Clemson College star joined the Mobile club of the Class AA Southern Association in June of 1960 and hit .311 in 95 games. Last year, which was his first full year in organized ball, Cline batted .290 in 144 games at Salt Lake City of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League. Even to think of replacing one of the American League’s premier outfielders with such an inexperienced young p}gyer may have bothered some managers. But MeGaha opened the 1962 spring exhibition season with Cline in center and used him more than any other player in the hope that the experience thus gained would help Cline. Cline responded with an excellent spring, hitting in a manner to support his minor league batting mark and showing enough ability in the field to warrant his being in the 1962 opening day lineup at Boston. Howeverr, Cline failed to get a hit in the club’s first three games and actually appeared very tight at the plate. When, the Indians met Washington in the fourth game of the season, MicGaha desided to rest the young man for a few days. However, when the Indians played the New York Yankees in a twin bill at Yankee Stadium, Cline was back in the lineup. He responded with a double in his initial time at bat and then started a batting barrage that has cemented his position on the roster. Batting in the leadoff position, Cline already has 14 runs batted in. Another youngster in whom MeGaha has displayed great confidence has been outfielder A1 Lup-low, the ex-Michigan State athlete. MeGaha gave Luplow the same opportunity as he did Cline to make the grade in spring training and Luplow came through impressively. His improvement both at bat and in the field was most dramatic over his 1961 appearances in Tucson and when it became apparent that he was ready, Tribe General Manager Gabe Paul was able to bolster the club’s pitching staff by sending Vic Power to Minnesota for Pete Ramos.
