Reagan vztraja pri nameravanem obisku nemškega vojaškega pokopališča v Bitburgu
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Včeraj je predsednik Reagan v intervjuju s skupino novinarjev vztrajal pri sporni odločitvi, da bo med obiskom v Zahodni Nemčiji v prvem tednu maja obiskal nemško vojaško pokopališče v mestu Bitburgu ter se udeležil slovesnosti, na kateri bo tudi položil venec v spo-tnin tem Nemcem, ki so padli v bojih z ameriškimi in zavezniškimi enotami v drugi svetovni vojni. Med padlimi nemškimi vojaki, Pokopanimi na tem pokopališču, je tudi nekaj pripadnikov nacističnih SS enot.
Ti nemški vojaki, je dejal Reagan v odgovoru na vprašanje, so tudi bili žrtve nacistov, prav tako žrtve, kot so bili tisti, ki so bili poslani v nacistična koncentracijska taborišča. O SS vojakih je Reagan priznal, da jih je nekaj res pokopanih v Bitburgu, da Pa Predstavljajo le manjšino. Nemški vojaki v bitburškem pokopališču so večinoma mladi fantje, stari okoli 18 let, ki so jih nacisti vključili v nemški vojni stroj. Ako bi ne obiskal pokopališča zaradi kritike, nastale v zadnjem času, je nadaljeval Reagan, bi to zelo škodovalo odnosom med ZDA in ZRN.
Skupina Reaganovih svetovalcev še podnje po Zahodni Nemčiji in išče primeren raj. ki bi ga lahko Reagan obiskal in priznal trpljenja tistih, ki so jih bili nacisti preganjali. Še vedno so silno nezadovoljne z Rea-ganovim obnašanjem v zvezi s to zadevo ži-0vske in tudi ameriške vojne veteranske Organizacije. da še ni mogoče govoriti o začetku kakega gospodarskega zastoja. Poročilo trgovinskega tajništvo, ki je sicer presenetilo mnoge ekonomiste, trdi, da gre odgovornost za sorazmerno slabe številke predvsem rekordno visokemu uvozu. Zaradi uvoza so mogla ameriška podjetja manj prodati ameriškim kupcem, močan dolar pa je zelo škodoval ameriškim izvoznikom.
V zadnjem poldrugem mesecu je tudi ameriški dolar pod močnim pritiskom na denarnih borzah. Od 25. februarja, ko je dolar dosegel rekordno visoko vrednost na-pram drugim valutam, je zgubil 12% svoje vrednosti. Od začetka leta pa je dolar vreden 5% manj. Finančniki so bili sicer mnenja, da je bil dolar precenjen in radi tega niso še posebno zaskrbljeni. Bojijo se le, da bi dolar začel prehitro padati, kar bi lahko povzročilo paniko med investitorji. Trenutno pa ne kaže, da bo do kaj takega prišlo.
Tesnejše sodelovanje med Kitajsko in Japonsko na vojaškem področju — Strah pred Sovjetsko zvezo povod za zbliževanje
TOKIO, Ja. — Opazovalci kitajskih in japonskih političnih razmer soglašajo, da se Kitajska in Japonska zanimata za tesnejše sodelovanje na vojaškem področju. Japonci predlagajo, naj bi japonske bojne ladje obiskale kitajska pristanišča, julija lani pa je Japonsko obiskal kitajski obrambni minister. Prišlo je lani tudi do tajnih pogajanj med državama, na katerih sta menda našli skupno mnenje o nevarnosti obema, ki jo predstavlja ZSSR.
Kitajci dobro vedo, da imajo Sovjeti v bližini kitajskih meja kakih 52 divizij, ki so oborožene z najsodobnejšo opremo. Zadnji čas Sovjeti tudi nameščajo rakete SS-20 po vzhodnem delu ZSSR. Te rakete so brez dvoma naperjene zoper Kitajsko in Japonsko. Japonci in tudi Kitajci so zaskrbljeni zaradi okrepitve sovjetske mornarice na Tihem oceanu, posebno, ker imajo Sovjeti oporišča v Vietnamu, torej južno od Kitajske in Japonske, vse to poleg oporišč v Vladovo-stoku in okolici severno od obeh držav.
Japonska ustava sicer močno omejuje obrambne ukrepe, ki jih lahko država podv-zame, torej ni mogoče govoriti o kaki pogodbi med Japonsko in Kitajsko.

Cape Canaveral, Fla. — Danes dopoldne rtaj bi pristalo na Floridi vesoljsko letalo Discovery, na katerem je 7 članov posadke.
Peking, Ki. — Danes je načelnik kitajske komunistične partije Hu Yao-bang dejal, da bo Kitajska vojska zmanjšana za milijon vojakov. Ukrep je v skladu s kitajsko zunanjo politiko, je dejal Hu.
New York, N.Y. - Podjetje Union Carbide je odobrilo 5 milijonov dolarjev pomoči žrtvam zastrupitve s plinom, do katere je prišlo v mestu Bhopal, Indija, 3. decembra lani. V nesreči je umrlo 1700 oseb, do 200.000 pa je bilo poškodovanih. Predstavniki žrtev so že vložili tožbe zoper Union Carbide, v katerih zahtevajo skupno odškodnino v vrednosti več milijard dolarjev.
Moskva, ZSSR — Sovjetski voditelj Mihail S. Gorbačov se bo udeležil sestanka držav varšavskega vojaškega pakta, ki bo v Varšavi prihodnji teden. Pakt poteka letos in članice bodo podpisale novo pogodbo, ki ga bo podaljšala. Gre za prvi obisk Gorbačova v tujino od prihoda na oblast po smrti K. Černenka.

Pri Mariji Vnebovzeti—
To nedeljo ob 3.30 pop. bo v šolski dvorani pri Mariji Vnebovzeti salezijanski duhovnik g. Mirko Žerjav kazal čarovniške umetnosti (magic show). Spremljal ga bo g. Franc Levstek, župnik v Radencih, ki bo poročal o gradnji nove cerkve. Vsi vabljeni!
Pomemben sestanek—
V	nedeljo, 26. maja, bo v clevelandski stolnici sv. Janeza koncelebrirana sv. maša za žrtve vojske in komunistične revolucije s posebnim poudarkom na žrtve Vetrinjske tragedije. O tem smo poročali v torkovi številki AD. Tiste slovenske organizacije in posamezniki, ki so voljni pri tej osrednji žalni slovesnosti sodelovati, so vabljeni, da pošljejo svoje zastopnike na sestanek to nedeljo ob 6. uri zvečer v Družabni sobi avditorija Sv. Vida.

Frances Gorše in Freda, zaposlen pri Eaton Axle Co. 28 let, do svoje upokojitve 1. 1971, član eu-clidskega upokojenskega kluba in SNPJ št. 614. Pogreb bo iz Želetovega pogrebnega zavoda na E. 152. cesti v ponedeljek, 22. aprila, dop. ob 10. na pokopališče Vernih duš. V	nedeljo, 14. aprila, je za rakom v Manor Care starostnem domu umrla 79 let stara Anna M. Markovich, rojena Medic v Clevelandu, 1. 1911 pa se je s starši vrnila v stari kraj in se zopet v ZDA naselila 1. 1924, vdova po Georgeu, mati Dorothy Trepal in Georgea Martina (Minn.), 7-krat stara mati, 3-krat prastara mati, sestra Josepha (Jefferson, O.), Toneta, Karoline, Marije, Angele, Ivanke (vsi v Jug.) ter že pok. Rudija (Jug.), zaposlena pri Parker-Hannifin Co. 20 let, do svoje upokojitve 1. 1970, zelo aktivna na društvenem polju. Bila je članica SŽZ št. 20 (služila kot preds. 20 let), društva sv. Helene št. 193 KSKJ, Oltarnega društva pri Mariji Vnebovzeti ter Collin-wood Golden Agers. Vatikan v našem času
Govoreč o »našem času« imam v mislih časovno obdobje od konca druge svetovne vojne do danes. Je to, bogme, zelo razgibana doba, polna sprememb in novosti, kakor jih svetovna zgodovina le prav malo beleži. Samo površno premislimo: pojavila seje do tedaj povsem nepoznana atomska znanost, ki kulminira v atomski bombi, grozeči uničiti življenje na našem planetu; nesluten razvoj tehnologije je izumil mašino, ki nadomešča človekove možgane in jih celo nadkriljuje v računanju, kalkuliranju, razkrivanju tajnosti in planiranju in bogve kaj vse; človeška družba se rapidno razkraja iz temeljnih podstav družine in države v nove socialne oblike človeškega sožitja, v neomejeno individualno svobodo izživljanja v enem oziru, v drugem pogledu pa vklenjeno v breznarodno in brezdržavno marksistično nasilno vladanje svetovnega proletariata. In tako naprej.
Cerkve, molilnice in sinagoge se praznijo, polnijo pa hiše neomejenega seksualnega izživljanja in prešuštvovanja. Nerojeno človeško bitje izgublja sleherno možnost, da bi mu bilo še možno rešiti življenje. Mladi rodovi se pogrezajo v naslado erosa in vseh vrst mamil, in izhoda iz tega stanja ni videti. In tako naprej.
Sredi vsega tega preobražanja stoji Vatikan, svetovno žarišče katoliške vere in Petrova skala Cerkve, kakor mogočen svetilnik sredi razburkanega morja. Vse vrste valovi se zaletavajo vanjo, a skala se zdi, da stoji nespremenjena, kakršna je bila pred sto in sto leti. A to se le zdi, je le videz. Resnica je čisto drugačna.
Težko je najti v cerkveni zgodovini primere, ko bi se bil Vatikan in z njim vesoljna Cerkev tako obsežno in odločno priličil potrebam preobrazujoče se človeške družbe v obdobju ene same generacije, čemur smo danes mi vsi priče. Za ceno močnega pretresa celotne cerkvene strukture, je Vatikan II uzakonil daljnosežne ukrepe za uspešno duhovno misijo Cerkve v bolni človeški družbi; več kot 400-letna praksa voliti Italijana na Petrov stol se je umaknila izvolitvi slovanskega sv. očeta; ta si je opasal ledja in se podal po svetu misijonarit za Kristusa križanega in vstalega, kakor ni zgovorno misijonaril še nihče v človeški zgodovini: uči, razlaga, prosi in roti, pa tudi opominja in graja milijonom in milijonom navdušenih poslušalcev širom sveta, ki plakajo od veselja, ko ga zagledajo.
Ko Vatikan skrbno in pazljivo zasleduje učinke in posledice razkrajanja dosedanje človeške družbe, pri tem pa ocenjuje s tem v zvezi učinke in posledice Vatikana II in njegovih ukrepov, se pokaže umestnost ponovno sklicati vesoljni cerkveni zbor v Rim prihodnjo jesen, da škofje z vsega sveta proučijo po dvajsetih letih od Vatikana II položaj vere in Cerkve ter potrdijo primerne ukrepe. Spremembe znotraj in zunaj Cerkve so velike, in Vatikan je previden, zavedajoč se težkih razmer.
Pa je Vatikan tudi moderno prožen in gibčen pri izvrševanju svoje od Jezusa Kristusa zapovedane misije: Pojdite in učite... V tem naročilu ni rečeno, kako naj nalogo učenja oblikujejo in kakšna sredstva naj uporabljajo. O tem odloča razvoj in trenutno stanje človeške družbe. Način evangelizacije izpred 100 ali le 50 let v sedanjih razmerah ni več zadosten. Tudi Vatikan čuti potrebo po uspešni uporabi sodobnih komu-
ZSatomašniški jubilej msgr. Louis B. Baznika
CLEVELAND, O. - V nedeljo, 28. aprila 1985, bo msgr. Louis B. Baznik slovesno obhajal svoj zlati jubilej mašni-škega posvečenja. Ob 12. uri opoldne bo v cerkvi sv. Vida v Clevelandu darovana slovesna koncelebrirana sv. maša. Glavni maševalec bo poleg jubilanta prevzv. škof dr. A. Edward Pevec ob somaševanju mnogih duhovnikov.
Malo je slovenskih duhovnikov v Ameriki, ki bi ob svojem jubileju mašništva mogli pokazati na tako obsežno in čestokrat želo kočljivo duhovniško delovanje tekom 50 let vršenja dušnopastirskih dolžnosti. Ob tem slovesnem zlatem jubileju mašništva čutimo dolžnost, da vsaj v glavnem zabeležimo važnejše podatke življenjskega delovanja zaslužnega in uglednega slovenskega duhovnika v Ameriki, ki je opravljal tako važne naloge, da neobhodno spadajo v zgodovino ameriških Slovencev.
Msgr. Louis B. Baznik je bil rojen 13. decembra 1907 v Clevelandu, Ohio, na znani Addison Road. Njegov oče Janez je bil rojen v vasi Malo Mraševo, župnija sv. Križ pri Kostanjevici, Slovenija, mati Lucija pa je bila rojena v Dobrepolju, Slovenija. Oba sta prišla v Ameriko leta 1893. Poročila sta se leta 1894. V družini je bilo potem 9 otrok. Oče je umrl 15. avgusta 1925, naš jubilant je bil takrat star samo 18 let. Mati je umrla 27. marca 1944, je torej dočakala sinovo mašniško posvečenje.
Slavij enec-zlatomašnik msgr. Baznik je prejemal prvi dobri šolski pouk v novi domači farni šoli Sv. Vida v Clevelandu. Njegove učiteljice so bile sestre notredamke. V osmih letih šole pri Sv. Vidu si je pridobil dobro podlago, da je nadaljeval študije v Latin High School in od tam k na-daljnemu študiju na Dayton univerzi. Nekaj časa je obiskoval tudi benediktinski kolegij St. Bede College v Peru, 111.
Bogoslovne Rudije je
dokončal na St. Mary’s Seminary v Clevelandu, Ohio. V mašnika je bil posvečen 23. aprila 1935, svojo prvo sv. daritev ali novo mašo pa je daroval 28. aprila 1935 v svoji rojstni župniji sv. Vida. Torej točno 50 let pred svojo zlato mašo.
Dober mesec po duhovniški posvetitvi, 31. maja 1935, je bil novomašnik Father Baznik že nastavljen kot kaplan na stari slovenski župniji sv. Lovrenca v Nevburgu, Ohio. Takrat je bil tam za župnika zaslužni in ugledni slovenski duhovnik msgr. John Oman.
V času vojne, leta 1944, je bil imenovan za vojaškega kurata v ameriški armadi. To službo je vršil 5 let. Dve leti je bil na severnem italijanskem vojnem področju, večinoma na Goriškem in Tržaškem. Potem je bil eno leto kurat v vojaški kaznilnici v Milwaukee, Wis., nazadnje pa še eno leto na Japonskem.
Prihod k Sv, Vidu
Msgr. Louis B. Baznik je bil imenovan za župnika največje slovenske fare v Ameriki Sv. Vid v Clevelandu 9. aprila 1952. V tej zelo zahtevni
nikacijskih sredstev na polju čudovitega tehnološkega napredka.
Nedavno so listi poročali o doslej nepoznanem dogodku v Vatikanu. Kako je do tega prišlo, je in bo najbrž ostala skrivnost: eden vodilnih managerjev ameriške televizijske družbe NBC Timothy Russert se je s pismom v poljskem jeziku obrnil na papeža s prošnjo, da bi tej družbi dal »priložnost molitve z Vami«, in sicer v času letošnjega velikega tedna. Janez Pavel II. je po obrazložitvi predloga o izvedbi v svoji veliki vnemi za širjenje božjega kraljestva na zemlji, čemur naj služi tudi svetovna televizija, prošnji ugodil.
Na ta način je NBC postaja oddajala v svoji ustaljeni oddaji »The Today Show« pet dni zaporedoma velikotedenske dogodke v Vatikanu v »živi« obliki. Začela je oddajo s papeško mašo v Pavlinski kapeli, katere se je udeležilo celotno televizijsko osebje, ki ga je sv. oče po maši nagovoril in blagoslovil. Oddaje so se po skupno deseturnem programu zaključile na veliki petek. V teku oddajanja so prišli na vrsto tudi intervjuvi raznih vatikanskih visokih dostojanstvenikov. Med njimi je posebej omenjen vatikanski državni tajni, kardinal Casaroli, pa tudi vrsta drugih osebnosti, ki so razlagale strukturno ureditev te skoro 2000-letne katoliške ustanove in njeno sedanje delovanje.
Dogodek gotovi zasluži svetovno pozornost, ki jo je bil deležen. Naznanja začetek najbolj sodobne in učinkovite poti, po kateri Vatikan v našem času more dosegati človeški rod širom sveta in na svojski način oznanjati svetu božje kraljestvo miru, sprave in ljubezni.

župniji je msgr. Baznik preživel najbolj plodna leta svojega duhovniškega delovanja. lu' kaj je bila še do nedavnega strnjena slovenska naselbina, ki se še sedaj odraža na mestni mapi kot majhen etnični otoček.
Slovenska naselbina okrog Sv. Vida je bila že pred desetletji močno ogrožena, kritični položaj so vsaj za nekaj časa rešili novi slovenski naseljenci* ki so proti koncu leta 1948 ia pozneje začeli prihajati v ZDA in se v velikem številu naseljevali v okolici Sv. naše slabosti in dolgove, kot nihče ustvarjenih bitij na svetu ne more.
Svojo veliko družino je zapustil tudi g. Alojzij Dolenc. Polna cerkev pogrebcev je pokazala, kako je bil med rojaki priljubljen. Preprosta duša, dober do potrebnih je še pred dobrim mesecem prinesel v naše župnišče stotak, kot vsako leto poprej, za naše slovenske misijonarje na terenu. MZA ga šteje med svoje pionirje. Spomnimo se obeh v naših molitvah.
Zastopnik farnega pastoralnega sveta je po sv. maši izrekel nekaj toplih misli o rajnem in poudaril, da je bil pokojni dober delavec in zvest katoličan. Zapustil da je nam vsem zgled, kako moramo živeti v svojem poklicu, da nam ne bo težko stopiti pred Sodnika.
Somaševalo je pri obeh sv. mašah več slovenskih duhovnikov in pomožni torontski škof dr. Alojzij Ambrožič je obakrat zaključil pogrebne molitve v cerkvi.
Počivajta \ v miru, dragi Peter in Lojze! Naj Bog tolaži Vajine domače in prijatelje, ki Vaju bodo pogrešali. Prosita za nas pri Bogu, da bi domovina doživela spet dan vstajenja v resnično svobodo in da bi naši misijonarji mogli pripeljati k Bogu še mnoge, ko jim pri njihovih naporih pomagamo reševati neumrjoče duše.

Odkar sem prišel nazaj v Indijo pred Božičem lanskega leta, sem moral veliko potovati po raznih opravkih in naročilih predstojnikov (duhovne vaje, pridige, tečaji itd.). Pošto vlačim s seboj v upanju, da se nekje malo bolj v miru ustavim za pisanje. Mi boste oprostili to veliko zamudo. Tu vam pošiljam potrdilo o prejemu zgoraj omenjene vsote. Bog naj dobrotnikom v MZA stokrat poplača. Prispela mi je AD z dne 26. oktobra 1984, z opombo glede obnovitve naročnine, za katero ste vi poskrbeli. Tudi zato najlepša hvala! Posebej bom pisal g. Usmiljenka Terezija Pavlič
se je oglasila 11. marca s tem pismom: »Vi ste meni voščili za Božič, jaz pa Vam odgovarjam za Veliko noč. Je pač pisanje zame trda šola. Prav lepa hvala za poslano pomoč. Bog plačaj! Čeprav je malo glasu od mene, vendar veliko mislim na svoje dobrotnike. Še posebej v molitvi. Vem, da pričakujete novic. Na splošno še kar gre, le male neprijetnosti nas iznenadijo od časa do časa. Imeli smo povodenj. Marsikdo je ob že zreli riž in lakota je neizbežna. Ceste so pretrgane, država ne more spraviti uvoženega blaga do oddaljenih mest in tako so mnogi želodčki lačni. Draginja na vse strani. Mi smo imeli lep pridelek preteklo žetev. Dva do tri mesece so bolniki preskrbljeni. Potem se bo morda našla kaka rešitev.
Za letos imamo načrt napraviti pri nas operacijsko sobo. Dosedaj smo namreč vse bolnike, ki so potrebovali operacijo, vozili v Tananarive. Vidimo, da je to prenaporno in tudi nevarno, da same sestre vozimo bolnike v dalj nje mesto. Eno naših ambulant mislimo spremeniti v. operacijsko sobo. Ves potrebni material: aparate, motor za elektriko in podobno bomo morali dobiti iz Evrope, za kar nam bo pomoč MZA zelo prav prišla. Saj je tudi tam vse drago, s pošto vred. V načrtu imamo tudi kopalnico, WC, 80-90 postelj, ki smo jih naročili v podjetju. Izdelalil so jih na grobo, sestavili pa jih bodo naši bolniki sami, pod vodstvom mizarja, ki jih poučuje dvakrat na teden.
Tudi prebeliti mislimo celo naselje, kar ni majhna stvar. Če bo vse to uspelo, bo to že kar majhni čudež, saj je to nov dodatek na vse naše redne izdatke, ki niso majhni. Upamo in računamo na božji blagoslov in pomoč dobrih duš. Mi pa na ta način tudi delamo dobro ljudem, ker damo zaslužek mnogim, ki so lačni. Vsaj kradejo potem ne več, kot je tukaj v navadi. Čudimo se včasih, če mine dan, da kaj kljub trem čuvajem ne izgine in ne zmanjka.
Naj končam s ponovno zahvalo za vse. Želim Vam in vsem sodelavcem - dobrotnikom v MZA veselo Alelujo. Vaša hvaležna sestra Terezija Pavlič, usmiljenka.«
Sestra Marie Vincent Novak se je v januarju zahvalila MZA za pet stotakov pomoči in v februarju za dodatnih sto dolarjev ob 50-letnici redovniškega poklica. Obe vsoti je uporabila za uboge in lačne. Hvaležna je Bogu, da lahko pol stoletja v Južni Afriki misijonari. Pripravljajo duše na krst, sv. obhajilo, sv. zakon. Šole so zelo zahtevne, a velik blagoslov za otroke in starše. Konec januarja 1945 je zbolel Mačkovšek. Dolgo se je držal dobro. Imel je izredno voljo. Ko je že komaj sedel, je pisal pismo svoji sorodnici v Kamnik. Začel je (kakor smo menda vsi začenjali): »Ich bin gesund und es geht mir gut« (zdrav sem in dobro mi gre), a je bil na smrt bolan.
Sedel sem poleg njega, ker sem se bal, da bo med pisanjem omahnil. Zato sem videl, kaj je pisal. Ko je pismo končal, sem ga spravil na pograd. Tožil je, da ga silno boli glava. Prosil me je, da grem k Stan-kotu (dr. Stanko Lapajne) na 23. blok. On ima neke zelo močne tablete. Morda mu bodo te pomagale.
Stankota sem našel na pogradu. Rekel je, da počiva. Ko sem mu povedal, kaj želi Mačkovšek, mi je dal par tablet in rekel:
»Daj mu jih, pomagale mu bodo samo za kratek čas. Nato se bo glavobol povrnil. On ima tifus. Spravi ga v revir (bolnico), kakor sem jaz Fetticha (dr. Oton Fettich), če ne boš še ti nalezel tifus.«
Moj tovariš Mačkovšek je šel v revir 29. januarja in tam umrl 1. februarja. Njegove stvari smo razkužili in Polen-čič se je z dovoljenjem štubaka preselil na Mačkovškovo ležišče, ki je bilo poleg mojega.
Tudi Polenčič je zbolel, šel v revir 16. februarja in tam umrl 23. februarja. Ivan Iljič je bridko jokal, ko me je obvestil o smrti obeh. Ostal sem sam.
Oba sem spremil v revir, od obeh sem se s težavo poslovil. Govoril sem jima bodrilne besede, a sam nisem verjel vanje. Slutil sem, da se ne bomo videli nikoli več. In se nismo! Bog sam ve, zakaj je tako moralo biti.
Tifus je divjal vedno bolj. Revir je bil poln, jetniki so ležali in umirali po blokih. Bilo je strašno! V tretji štubi se je štubak Rihard z vso silo boril proti kaosu. Na tifusu bolni so bili tako izčrpani, da niso mogli na stranišče in so opravljali potrebno kar na tla. Bivši francoski konzul v Konstantinoplu je bil ves bscan in posran, ko so ga mrtvega potegnili iz pograda.

kot drva v skladovnice na koncu bloka, kjer so jih vsak dan enkrat pobrali, naložili na vozove in vozili v krematorij ruski jetniki, ki so bili v tej žalostni komandi. Predno so jetnika nesli na kup, mu je štubak privezal na palec kos kartona z njegovim imenom in številko. Obleko in perilo so zmetali na poseben kup zunaj štube. Večkrat so pobrali v enem dnevu nad sto pa tudi 150 trupel samo tistih, ki so umrli po blokih.
Kasneje so vsakemu napisali njegovo številko s črnilom na prša, čim je zbolel, ker je bilo večkrat težko ugotoviti identiteto tistega, ki je umrl.
Spominjam se Francoza, ki se je opoldne še postavil v vrsto, čakal, dobil juho, se opotekel do ležišča in padel mrtev na tla, predno se je juhe doka-knil.
Spominjam se dveh Italijanov, ki sta prikrivala, da je njun tovariš mrtev, in sprejela zanj kosilo in večerjo, ki sta jo sama pojedla.
Življenje ni bilo več vredno življenja.
Tiste dni je umrl tudi moj dober prijatelj Samuel de Lange, odvetnik iz Groeningena, Nizozemska. Bil je globoko veren protestant. V najtežjih dneh mi je dajal pogum in me s citati iz sv. pisma poučeval,' da je trpljenje potrebno, ker očiščuje dušo in telo. Bog s teboj, Samuel, bil si blaga duša tudi med hijenami!

Papež Janez XXII. je leta 1960 imenoval župnika msgr. Baznika za svojega hišnega prelata. Ko je bil v Rimu ustanovljen slovenski zavod »Slo-venik«, so slovenski škofje določili župnika Baznika za svojega zastopnika v tej deželi.
Msgr. Baznik je bil izvoljen za glavnega duhovnega vodjo K.S.K.Jednote 21. avgusta 1958 na glavni KSKJ konvenciji v Detroitu, Mich. V tej dolžnosti je nasledil Rt. Rev. msgr. John Omana. Msgr. Baznik je vršil dolžnosti glavnega duhovnega vodje KSKJ polnih 24 let, potem je moral zaradi zdravstvenih razlogov svojb funkcijo odpovedati na konvenciji v Ely, Minn, leta 1982.
Nabirala so se leta in kopičile odgovornosti. Ko je bil msgr. Baznik star 62 let, je zaprosil škofijo za premestitev v lažjo in mirnejšo župnijo. Septembra 1969 se je kot župnik poslovil od svoje rojstne župnije Sv. Vida in prevzel mesto župnika v razmeroma majhni župniji v Thompson, Ohio.

sona odšel kot rezidenčni duhovnik k St. Rose župniji na zahodni strani mesta Cleveland, od tam k župniji sv. Kristine v Euclid, Ohio ter končno v St. Borromeo seminišče v Wickliffe, Ohio, kjer še danes uživa zasluženi pokoj.
Na Goriškem in Tržaškem Zelo malo je slovenski javnosti znano delovanje msgr. Baznika, ko je kot ameriški vojaški kurat na Goriškem in Tržaškem osebno opazoval dogodke ob. koncu vojske maja 1945. V tistem času je obiskal tudi škofa dr. Gregorija Rožmana. S svojim posredovanjem in vplivom je tudi pripomogel, da so škofa Rožma- r na preselili iz angleške v ameriško cono ter ga s tem najbrž rešil nevarnosti, da ga Angleži izročijo Jugoslaviji.
Mnogi, ki so bili kot begunci deležni posredne pomoči po msgr. Baznikovem delovanju, še danes ne vedo, da jim je kdaj kaj pomagal vojaški kurat »captain Baznik«. Vse svoje doživljaje v tisti dobi ob jugoslovanski-italijanski meji je msgr. Baznik podrobno opisal v Koledarju Ave Maria za leto 1948 pod naslovom: »Kaj sem kot vojaški duhovnik doživljal na slovenskih tleh«.
Msgr. Baznik, še sedaj smo Vam hvaležni, da ste takrat, ko so celo zahodni državni voditelji bili čisto zmedeni od komunistične propagande, tako zrelo in objektivno ameriškim Slovencem opisali, kaj se je v resnici takrat v Sloveniji dogajalo. Niti ene besede Vam ni treba preklicati — tudi po 40 letih je vse ostalo resnično, kakor ste takrat videli in opisali!

ka, pa je tudi veselja veliko, ko duše k Bogu pripeljajo na stotine načinov v misijonskem apostolatu. Za Božič pridejo ljudje iz velikih daljav v cerkev. Mnogi z oslovsko vprego, drugi peš. Kljub strašni vročini je bila cerkev ponovno nabito polna. Z mladino, ki dorašča, imajo iste težave kot naše dežele.
Vse v MZA naj lepše pozdravlja in za vse stalno s sosestra-mi moli.

skirts the cliffs which had not been available for viewing from the bus ride we had taken in the morning. Again homes of prominent people were pointed out. The boat turned about in the ocean and we returned on the other side of the bay. The trip took about two and a half hours and was very relaxing. A photographer, dressed as a pirate, was taking pictures of the passengers showing him in different poses with a knife or gun threatening the passenger. These pictures could be purchased before you left the boat. A mariachi orchestra was playing for those who wished to dance.
We returned to our hotel and decided that we would go to Carlos ’N Charlie’s for dinner. OH, what a line was already forming on the sidewalk! We arrived at eight o’clock, waited for some time to be allowed upstairs for the priviledge of waiting in the barroom until called, and finally at ten o’clock, we were seated in the restaurant. The wait was worth it as we had the best barbeque spareribs and

Sunday we relaxed. We had been told that we would need 1600 pesos ($8) as tariff fee before we would be able to go through Mexican custom lines. So we went to a money changer, got some pesos for our last day and decided to walk the avenue looking at the different stalls before each hotel and going through the shops that appealed to us.
We could have attended a bull fight or a cock fight, but neither of us had much appetite for that type of entertainment. We decided to go back to our room and while my sister started to pack, I decided to go through some of my shorthand notes, which had been written on a moving bus, to make sure that I would be able to decipher them when I got ready to write up the trip. shuttle bus at 6:30 and arrived at the airport at 7:00. Only one trip is made to Mexico City in the morning so the plane was filled to capacity. Again to our surprise we were required to pay 400 pesos ($2) before we were allowed to board. Luckily we had enough pesos so we didn’t get stuck in line. The trip took us one-half hour to get to Mexico.
We checked our luggage and had time to one o’clock to shop the various stores at the Mexican Airport. At boarding time there was a very long line of people waiting to get the 1600 pesos (no American money accepted) for the tariff to get out of Mexico. Were we lucky to have been told this information beforehand.
We left the airport at 2:30 p.m. and just a little time later the pilot announced that he had been instructed to slow down. Instead, he veared to the left and circled to that we got an excellent air-view of the pyramids, much better than attempting to climb all those steps.
We were buffeted by strong winds on our return to Atlanta. When we arrived, there was a blizzard in progress and we were told that our plane needed some repairs. An hour later, we got the news that a part had to be air-lifted in. About 25 passengers could be switched to the Delta Line which also had been delayed because of repairs. We were lucky to get on the Delta, but because of poor weather conditions in Cleveland, we were forced to wait our turn for takeoff until planes for Chicago, which had better weather conditions, took off. Each delay added another 15 to 20 minutes for the planes to be deiced.
We were finally on our way to Cleveland. Instead of arriving at 9:01 p.m., we arrived two and a half hours late. It was good to get home, but we were warned that much snow had fallen the week we were gone and that our sidewalks and streets were very slippery from the ice underneath the snow. What a let down!
In conclusion, one of the
Scottish mining engineers who was traveling with his wife and two-year old charming daughter advised us that they always carried a vacuum bottle for drinking water and one of those gadgets that you plug in and immerse in water to heat it up. Every night they boiled water, let it stand overnight, and it was safe to drink the next morning; it was not necessary to add water purification tablets to decontaminate the water. Since we hadn’t brought our gadget or tablets, we were very careful to remember the warnings of our friends back home — don’t drink any water unless it’s purified. We never had as much mineral water as we did on this trip. Even when drinking soft drinks or juices, we made sure that pruified water had been used and that no ice cubes were added unless they also had been made with purified water. You read the labels or ask. At times we were tempted to buy food from street vendors, but we abstained. It paid off as we came home in good health — we had avoided “Montezuma’s Revenge” (upset stomach and diarrhea) as it is commonly called which afflicts so many travelers to Mexico who do not take the necessary precautions.
Visitors to Mexico in previous times had complained that Mexico wasn’t very clean. We found the opposite to be true — evidently the president’s TV broadcast urging his countrymen to clean up the streets (tall, kitchen size trash containers were liberally spaced alongside the curbs) and the sidewalks were being sprinkled every day; we saw no graffiti until the day we were leaving the city.
The country itself is steeped in history and rich in its civilization. Mexico, Taxco, and especially Acapulco were a wonderful place to go for a vacation. There was so much to see and do, the weather was very agreeable, its people so hospitable that we agreed that this is one place we certainly would like to revisit. Adios, amigos!

A Rainy Day in Cleveland

When 50 years have elapsed, it represents a sizeable amount of time in the life of a human being. So when one remembers, as I do, that it rained on May 5, 1935, our readers will probably raise their eyebrows and wonder why such an insignificant fact is recalled after a half a century.
It happened this way. In the month of March 1935, our third grade teacher, Sister Philomeen announced one day two young seminarians or deacons were going to speak to us.
When the two youthful and distinguished-looking future priests arrived that morning they were given a most cordial reception by the class.
The purpose of the visit was to ask our class’ permission to postpone our First Commu-
nion Day from April 28 to May 5, exactly one week later. This request was made so the two deacons could celebrate their First Mass at St. Vitus Church on April 28. Their ordination was to be a week earlier at St. John’s Cathedral.
The class agreed to the postponement.
The two deacons, however, further asked us to pray for beautiful weather on their First Mass Sunday. They then promised to reciprocate and pray for a perfect day weather-wise for our First Holy Communion Day, May 5.
Well, we did our part, and the two priests had an enchanting, balmy, flawless Sunday.
But, a week later with the arrival of May 5th, came the arrival of one of the worst rainstorms of the century. It rained cats and dogs the entire day. From dawn to dusk tor-
rential rains pelted us unmercifully. We were contemplating the construction of , an ark.
We all recall the occasion with humorous and fond memories, including the two .priests who were Msgr. Louis B. Baznik and Rev. Joseph F. Celesnik . The two will be commemorating their Golden Anniversary during the next two weekends.
We proudly offer our congratulations to these two outstanding priests who have labored relentlessly for 50 years in the service of our Lord. And we classmates of St. Vitus will again pray they have another flawless day.
However, for the 50th anniversary of our Holy Communion, I think it would be wish to bring our bumber-shoots.

O by MADELINE DEBEVEC 2 On Sunday, the twenty-§ eighth of April, the Right Reverend Monsignor Louis B. Baznik, former pastor of St. Vitus Church and a loyal, active and staunch supporter of the Ameriška Domovina will celebrate the Golden Jubilee of his ordination to the Holy Priesthood.
The observance will begin with a noon Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Vitus Church concelebrated with the Most Reverend Bishop A. Edward Pevec. Coincidentally, Bishop Pevec also delivered the English homily at Msgr. Baznik’s Silver Jubilee Mass on May 1st, 1960 at St. Vitus Church.
The public is cordially invited to attend the Mass and the 5 p.m. Slovenian Litany of the Blessed Mother followed by Benediction. After the evening services, a social will follow in St. Vitus School Auditorium.
Throughout the war years, Msgr. Baznik aided many Slovenian refugees.
Presently Msgr. Baznik resides at Borromeo Seminary. He is known to have a great rapport with the seminarians and faculty there.

Msgr. Baznik, born Dec. 13, 1907 on Addison Road in Cleveland, is a product of St. Vitus School, where his father was among the founders of the parish. After attending St. Vitus for eight years, he went to Latin School in Cleveland, Dayton Preparatory School, Dayton University and St. Bede College in Peru, 111. He studied for the priesthood at St. Mary’s Seminary on Ansel Road in Cleveland.
Rev. Baznik was ordained on April 23,	1935,	by

late Msgr. John J. Oman. There he served until 1944 when he was appointed military chaplain in the United States Armed Forces. He served in the army five years, including two overseas on the Italian front. When he returned to the U.S., he became chaplain of a military prison in Milwaukee, Wis., then spent a year in Japan before being named pastor of St. Vitus on April 9, 1952. Msgr. Baznik added two long-needed "structures, a school auditorium-gymnasium and a convent. A campaign was begun for the auditorium-gym in November 1955 and extended to September 1957. On Sunday, Sept. 22, 1956, the first shovel was turned, and construction started a year later.
The building of the convent, completed in 1962, provided modern living quarters and a private chapel for the Sisters of Notre Dame, who have taught at St. Vitus since 1913.
Msgr. Baznik’s efforts produced increased enrollment, too. By 1967, previously declining school rolls had risen to 720 pupils, and more hard work resulted in a school library and safety renovations in the entire school.
Parishioners of St. Vitus also praise Msgr. Baznik for other accomplishments, including:
•	Reviving the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which helps the poor and unfortunate of the parish.
•	Organizing the Young Adult Club and the Ushers Club and introducing Cub Scouting to the parish.
•	Affiliating the Altar Society with the People’s Eucharistic League and forming the Confraternity of Christian Mothers.
Appointed a member of the Catholic School Board of the Cleveland Diocese by Archbishop Edward F. Hoban in 1958, Msgr. Baznik was named a Domestic Prelate with the title of Right Reverend Monsignor by then Pope John XX-III on March 10, 1960. It was a fitting way to mark his Silver Jubilee as a priest.
The former long-time spiritual director of KSKJ — the American Slovenian Catholic Union — the oldest and largest Catholic Slovenian fraternal in the U.S., and the honorary president of ZSD, an organization of Slovenian
Jim and I and the entire staff of the American Home extend our heartiest congratulations to Msgr. Baznik and may God bestow an abundance of blessings upon him.

On Saturday, April 13, the West Park Slovenian Home celebrated their 65th anniversary with a dinner in the lower hall, and a cultural program, recognition awards, and dance in the main auditorium.
Helen Konkoy was master of ceremonies. Marge Peresutti and Marie Pivik sang the Slovenian and English national anthems.
Charles Ipavec, Federation of Slovenian Homes president, and former member of the West Park Board of Directors and 35 year stockholder, spoke words of congratulations.
Marie Pivik led the AMLA West Park Chorus in a number of songs and did a terrific job on solos as well.
Ella Samanich and Marge Peresutti sang the Wind Song in a beautiful duet.
Dr. Karl Bonutti represented
Mayor Voinovich and presented the Home with a proclamation of recognition. Councilman Dale Miller did the same from City Council.
Al Postotnik offered his congratulations in behalf of the rest of the Slovenian politicians.

He was a member of American Legion Post 343 and SNPJ No. 129. He was a retired meat cutter who was self-employed for more than 50 years. He came to the U.S. in 1911 when he was 18 years old from his native Yugoslavia.
The Funeral Mass was Saturday, April 13 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 9:30 a.m. Interment at All Souls Cemetery. Grdina Funeral Home, 17010 Lake Shore Blvd., handled arrangements.
Friends were received at Zele Funeral Home, 6502 St. Clair. Services were at St. Vitus Church. Interment at All Souls Cemetery.
PETER JANČAR Peter Jančar, 70, was the beloved husband of Mary (nee Dolenc), father of Peter and Frank; brother of Marija Suman, Fr. Franc Jančar (Austria), Matilda (Slovenia), and Amelia Peklar (dec.); grandfather of Michael, Christie, Matthew and Gregory.
Mr. Jančar was a member of KSKJ Lodge No. 172, St. Vitus Holy Name Society, Slovenska Pristava, and Ruritan National Lodge.
Services were held at the Zak Funeral Home, 6016 St. Clair followed by a Mass at St. Vitus Church. Interment is in All Souls Cemetery.

Dobrepolje parish seeks funds for church steeple

Recently, I received a letter from Pastor Franc Skulj of Videm, Dobrepolje Parish in Slovenia, Yugoslavia. He thanked me for the gift that I sent for the parish church not too long ago. Along with the thank you note, he made mention of the plan to rebuild the parish church steeple this year.
Although the project had been in the planning stages for quite a while, other more urgent needs came along, so the steeple project had to be postponed. But, alas, the time has arrived when the steeple project cannot be postponed any longer.
Thus, desire occurred in my mind to write this article so the rest of Slovenian Americans from Dobrepolje region will know about the need to rebuilt the steeple.
I discussed this matter with Msgr. Louis Baznik. Other Slovenian Americans respond-
ed favorably many times when such appeals were made to them and they donated generously to such worthy causes. I am sure that there are many Slovenians from Dobrepolje who came to America and Canada who did not yet forget their old country home parish.

Salute to Msgr. Baznik on 50 Years

Seldom in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of the Slovenian people than Rt. Rev. Msgr. Louis B. Baznik.
Monsignor Baznik, who will be celebrating his 50 years in the priesthood on Sunday, April 28 has dedicated his life to helping others in whatever way he could. His friend Bishop Edward Pevec was proclaimed Man of the Year by the Federation of Slovenian Homes in Cleveland this year. But Msgr. Baznik could easily be declared “Man of the Half-Century” for his 50 years of tireless work for the good of mankind.
A few examples of how he has been available to bring the prestige of his office to Slovenian activities, include last September, when he was one of the co-celebrants of a Mass for the Ameriška Domovina * along with Bishop Pevec and Father Kumse at Slovenska Pristava. A few weeks later he was the principal speaker at the St. Vitus Catholic War Vets banquet; then he was at the KSKJ 90th Anniversary celebration on both Saturday and Sunday. You could hear his resonant voice praying the beads of the rosary as he led the procession up the hill at the Shrine on Chardon Rd.
And he can usually be found at the Fantje na Vasi concerts as well as other Slovenian cultural events.
During World War II while stationed in Italy, he helped Slovenian refugees wherever he could.
He is not one to take a back seat and let things happen. He makes it happen. Before going into retirement from his pastorate at St. Vitus Church in Cleveland, he scouted around for a replacement who could speak Slovenian to serve the need of the parishioners. He traveled to Canada to talk about St. Vitus to a young seminarian. He took the deacon to dinner and pleaded with him to come to the U.S. The man was reluctant. Undaunted, a few months later, Monsignor again went north and again presented the cause of the Cleveland parishioners. Rev. Joseph Boznar gave in and is now pastor at St. Vitus.
Monsignor Baznik was also national spiritual director for the American Slovenian Catholic Union. But he was reluctant to leave the post unless an outstanding candidate could be found to take his place. Again Msgr. Baznik looked around and after much searching found Fr. Joseph Yelenc teaching college in the mountains of Pennsylvania. Now KSKJ has a top-notch spiritual director.
The golden year celebrant is noted for the quality of his sermons, not the length. “I like to keep them short and to the point,” he once told the A.H. If it were not for Monsignor Baznik’s inspirational message he once gave, the Ameriška Domovina might have gone out of existence two years ago.
He said, “Don’t be afraid to take a reasonable chance to advance your cause.” That phrase stuck in my mind. At that time our printing press
was breaking down, and we were told it would be impossible to fix again. We had an opportunity to purchase an offset printing press, but would have to personally go heavily in debt. Recalling Monsignor’s words, we went forward and bought the equipment and consequently, the paper continues uninterrupted, entering our 88th year.
At St. Vitus he was not afraid to build that beautiful auditorium which has become the center of many athletic and social activities. His accomplishments are many and his life full.
He has led many trips to foreign lands. And he is noted as an excellent tour guide. There have been instances where a person has been hospitalized in a strange land
and Monsignor stayed behind to make sure the victim was able to safely reach home again.
Some persons work hard for money or recognition. But a priest is out there doing his job seven days a week from morning until way past nightfall and what does he get? Money? No. Power? No. The priest does it because he has dedicated his life to God by serving mankind.
Fifty years is a long time on the job. Some persons are able to retire after 20 years working, others 25, 30, etc., but 50 years in the service of the Lord is a remarkable record that deserves special commendation.
