Grdina Says Ever since we've been put in charge of this sheet, individuals have approached us with innumerable plans and schemes, some of them publicity getters, others supposed money makers, but none of them plausible or a d v i s a b le. Last night we had a plan brought to our attention which is really worth while and the more we think of it the better we like it. The idea, still in the embryonic stage, is to sponsor an American Home Junior Day, this to be a picnic or outing for ALL the young folks of the community. Such a stunt presents innumerable possibilities" Think of its value merely as a big "get acquainted" party! Of course, to put such a stunt through, would require much work in making arrangements, plans and program. But if our readers are in favor of the affair, the American Home Junior is willing to carry it through to a finish. As we mentioned before, it's still just an idea, but we sure would be glad to hear from our readers as to what they think of it, v;hat suggestions they have to offer and if the response is favorable we'll start "bearing" down on it. Let's hear from YOU! BEST MAN? Who is the best bestman in the community? We don't know, maybe you do. But what we do know is that Anton "Tony" Kramer is head, shoulders and chest above the rest of the field in the race for the title of the most popular best man in town. Though we haven't read her copy yet, we imagine Cinderella Jane will tell you all about the Karish-Slapnik wedding of Wednesday. One " thing though, we are certain, she won't mention is that the wedding was the fourteenth time Mr. Kramer has served as best man or usher. When questioned about it, he smiled and remarked he is only getting started and that before he is finished, he .will have past the record of Mrs. Edward Kalish, who made 23 trips down the aisle before taking the fatal one. We believe that mark of 23 is just about the high water mark of the community. Do you know of anybody who can pass it? A BOOSTER, -i And just now we receive a little Uote from one signing himself or herself, whichever it may be, A Booster. Here it is: "This might be some news—I noticed lately that both secretaries of St. Agnes C. K. of O. are sporting diamonds on their left hands. Wonder who are the lucky guys? Also I would like to see Mitzi's name in the who's who." Fine and dandy. This diamond ring affair is news to us. We'll have to look into it and see if we can't have the dope for you next week. Just what Mitzi do you mean? Tell us the last name and we'll run her in the Bits About Them for you. GAMBLER Besides being a fighter, last Tuesday's brawl showed us Frankic Simrns is a gambler. Sent into the ring with instructions to wait and tire out his opponent, the Slovenian slugger decided to make quick work of it; cither he or Godfrey was going to get knocked out—and in short order. Frankie gambled and lost. Eddie Kovacic tells us that it was only by inches, too. Tough. But wc always did admire the fellow who was willing to take a sporting chance. -O- Laff-O-Lots GODFREY KAYOES SIMMS IN SECOND ROUND OF BATTLE The Laff-O-Lots Club met at the home of Miss Sophia Posch last night. Following a short business meeting, Ihe nimble stitchers discarded their ■sewing and attended a dance as part of the summer program. Handlers Toss in Towel After "Black Menace" Floors Frankie Three Times By EDDIE KOVACIC When the towel came hurtling into the ring from Frankie Simms' corner in the second chapter of his scheduledl2-round gallop with George Godfrey at Taylor Bowl last Tuesday evening, it brought to a close an inevitable occurence. Not that Frankie was conceded to lose, but when two "bulls" are loose in the same ring, both swinging viciously, one is bound to connect, sooner or later, and when he does, the other is a safe bet to do a ten-second Annette Kellerman to the resin-covered canvas. It was just Godfrey's luck and Frankie's misfortune that the former landed his haymaker first. The Slovenian boy's "Old Destroyer," threatened only once, that amounting to a mess of zeros as it landed just a little high of the vital spot. Had that single punch landed just a shade lower—Oh well, we'll play with the "if" deck some other time. Early in the first stanza, the black menace half-shoved, half-punched Frankie to the canvas for a count of nine. The Cleveland heavy got up, still a little groggy, but recuperated wonderfully, putting across his "almost-finishing" punch and making things so merry for the black boy that he earned a draw for the round despite the knockdown. The second round came to an abrupt close when the colored, man-mountain sent over a terrific right to the jaw, sending the local lad down for another nine count and then putting him down once again with the same right as the towel flew into the ring. Asked if he would like a return match, Frankie smiled and nodded his head, displaying a confidence thai will stand him a world of good in his future bouts. Godfrey likewise, expressed his desire to meet the local. leather heaver in a return go. Despite the quick ending, those in the ringside were . pleased with the aggresiveness shown by Simms in carrying the fight to a man holding a 45-pound weight advantage over him and expressed the opinion that though still a long way from the top, he is a comer. Eddie Mead, promoter of the Taylor Bowl mixup, saw himself out of the red for the first time this year, clicking some 8,000 customers through the tul-nstiles, for about a $15,000 gate. -o- S. D. Z. LEAGUE S. Y. M. C. Meets Clairwoods, Saints Crusaders Clash With Cleveland idle and their opponents the tail end Clairwoods, the Slovenian Young Men's Club have a splendid opportunity of increasing their lead in the S. D. Z. league. Clairwoods, still to register a league victory, will be out to upset the dope far, wide and handsome when the two meet at Gordon No. 6 tomorrow in an early game. Though past performances and records point to an overwhelming S. Y. M. C. victory, it would not surprise us to see the Clairwoods, who are now thoroughly fighting mad, eke out a victory. In the other game carded for tomorrow at Gordon No. 6 late, the Modern Crusaders, surprise of the league to date and holders of third placc, will try to tighten up the league by trimming SS. Cyrill and Methodius and moving up on the second placc Cleveland ball tossers. But they'll have a battle on their hands for the Saints are out for revenge. It was the fcrusaders who started them on the chutes after they got off to a flying start and nothing would please them more than to turn the tables on the Modernists. Last Sunday's tilts all had to be . called off due to wet grounds. NEW GAME Novel Stunt Submitted by Reader is Tough on Other Fellow Frank Schneider, one of the Rainbow's End boys, is responsible for the following new game. It's possibilities are limited to drivers of machines only. The chief advantage of this trick is you need not know the person upon whom you are playing it. The disadvantage is. that you have to wait until the opportunity of pulling it presents itself. You and your vehicle pull up at a stoplight—against you. Someone pulls up alongside or is already there. This individual is not looking at the light. Here is your chance to do the dirty work. While the light is still red, start going ahead. Nine chances out of ten, the driver of the other car, without looking at the light, will put his car in motion and try to beat you on the getaway. You merely stop your car and let him get ahead—thereby "crashing" the light. This stunt is particularly funny if there is an officer of the law standing on the corner. Do you know of any "New Games?" If you do, send them in to the American Home Junior, 6117 St. Clair Ave., and let the rest of the readers get the benefit of them. MAXINE STEINITZ TO WRITE SERIES OF ARTICLES ON HER EUROPEAN TOUR First of Articles Written for American Home Junior Exclusively to Appear Next Week Slovenian Girls Drop First Game Suffer 17 to 16 Defeat at Hands of Blepp Sports Wednesday Failure to hold a two-run lead in the last inning cost the Slovenian Girls to drop a 17 to 16 decision to the Blepp-Coomb Sports at Woodland Hills last Wednesday evening. The defeat, the first for the neighborhood lassies since their entry in the city girls' Softball league, dropped them to a second place tie while the winners moved into undisputed possession of first. "Whitey" Doljak started on the mound for the Slovenians, but gave way to Champa when the Sports found her offerings for seven runs in the third. Going into the last of the fifth the Zaletel aggregation was on the short end of the 12 to 0 score. Here they got to Foduska, stellar slab artist for the Sports, and before she gave way to Vinning were enjoying a 16 to 14 lead, going into the last frame. Three Sports runs proved their undoing, however. Singularly enough, Marge Slogar, Slovenian girl in lead-off position for the Blepp team, was chiefly responsible for her kinsmen's defeat. Marge cracking out a homer, triple and single in five trips to the plate. Blatnik and Opalek hit circuit smashes for the Slovenians. Woodhills A, C. will be the next opponent of the Slovenians. They meet Wednesday at Woodhill No. 2 at 6:30. HIKERS Jugoslav Slovene Club Hikes to Knaus' Farm for Picnic An all-day hike and picnic will be sponsored by the Jugoslav Slovene Club tomorrow. The members are meeting at 8 a. m. at the St. Clair bathhouse and at 9 at St. Clair and Dille Rd. From there they will hike to the Knaus' Farm on Highland Rd. Each hiker is asked to bring her own lunch, but a BAR-B-Q supper will be served in the evening. Miss Frances Zulich, chairman of the program committee is making arrangements for a pleasant time at the farm. Many of us would like to take a six-weeks tour of continental Europe. In fact we all would. Unfortunately though, most of us are unable, for various and sundry reasons to do so. The. next best thing then, is to read the travelogues of the more fortunate ones. Realizing this, the American Home Junior has made arrangements with Miss Maxine Steinitz, who is making such a trip, for a series of exclusive articles, relative to the tour. Miss Steinitz leaves Cleveland tonight for New York from where she will sail for Europe aboard the S. S. Leviathan on Wednesday, July 16. Her first article, written while on ship,, will tell of the trip to New York. New York itself and of the ceremonies attendant to the departure from the States. And unless there is a hitch in the air mail connections, the article will appear in next Saturday's »issue of this paper. Miss Steinitz, who has had much experience in the field of writing, will present her impressions of the trip, not as a mere,, drab log of places, peoples and dates but rather as a friendly chat across the luncheon ta- ble, telling us of peculiar and amusing incidents besides giving us something of the lives and customs of our neighbors across the sea. Her articles, written each week, will be published in the American Home Junior exclusively, the Saturday following their receipt. Diverse mail facilities and connections make it impossible to give the exact dates of the appearances of the articles. Miss Steinitz is very well known in this locality for her extensive club and social work and claims the distinction of being the founder of the very active Jugoslav Slovene Club for girls. Miss Genevieve Schneller, also a member of the Jugoslav Slovene Club, is to accompany her on the voyage. The itinerary, as planned by the young ladies, calls for stoppages in the capitals of France, Italy, Switzerland and Slovenia. The staff of the American Home Junior feels itself fortunate to be able to give you these first-hand accounts of the voyage and hopes you will enjoy them even more than what we expect you will. Innumerable Flowers Give Church Gala Garb for Occasion 400 Attend Reception Without doubt St. Vitus' church put on its most pretentious floral garb Wednesday morning when Miss Anne Karish was married to James Slapnik Jr. Never before did the church look so much like a forest lore. Four hundred palms alojie flanked the main aisle and the two side aisles, intermingled with mammoth baskets of gladiolii, candlelabra and single candle and lamp torchieres. The high altar, with its super abundance of salmon and pink gladiolii, ferns and palms, as well as the two floral bowers on either extreme of the sanctuary, added to the solemnity of the high mass of which Rev. Bar-tholemew Ponikvar was celebrant, Rev. Matthias Jager deacon, and Rev. Milan Slaje, St. Mary's church sub-deacon; Rev. John J. Oman, pastor of St. Lawrence church, and Rev. Edward Gabrenya, Lemont, 111., knelt in the sanctuary. The mass of the Blessed Virgin was sung by the choir under the direction of Mr. Srnovrs-nik, organist. Mitzi Grdina was soloist, and a duet, the "Ave Maria" by Rosewig, was sung by Mrs. Anthony Potočnik and Mrs. Peter Srnovrsnik. Miss Karish is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Karish, Biwabik, Minn. She wore a white satin sleeveless gown, with a double tier, edged in tulle. Her veil was a Chantilly lace cap which was fashioned in helmet style, to which was attached a long train of tulle and chantilly lace. Four orchids and lilies of the valley made up the bridal bouquet. Attendants were Miss Frances Slapnik, junior brides-maid, Miss Marie Grdina, maid-of-honor and the Misses Mary Cimperman, Frances Antoncic, Marie Zivoder, Ann Mrzlikar and Ann Novosel, bridesmaids. All wore dresses of printed net, with cape sleeves and single tiered skirts in delicate shades of rainbow color, with maline bandeaux and matching crepe slipper. Their bouquets were of roses, larkspur and baby breath. Mr. Slapnik is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Slapnik Sr., of the prominent Slapnik Bros. Florist establishment. He was attended by his brothers Charles and Louis as best man and prime usher respectively, and Messrs. Joseph Zupančič, Anthony Kobe, Harold Lausche and Anthony Kramer as ushers. Knaus' hall was the reception scene in the evening and the dance music was furnished by the Hoyer Trio. Mr. and Mrs. Slapnik Jr. will make their home on Arrowhead Ave. -O- SOKOLS DRILL Hold Gym Exhibition and Picnic at Euclid Tomorrow Some three hundred athletes, 200 of them Slovenian Sokols and the other hundred Bohemian guest drill teams, will participate in the big exhibition to be staged by the Sokols at the Slovenian National Home in Euclid.
