Ona bo nadaljevala naše delo, širila in vzdrževala bo naše ideje in načela, ko bomo mi se postarali in šli v g-obove. Zato se vse organizacije trudijo pridobiti mladino za svoje cilje in načrte. V mladini je bodočnost cerkve, naroda in države, čujte! V nedeljo 23. marca ob 8. uri zvečer ima mladina fare sv. Vida svojo veliko prireditev, telovadno Akademijo. Nocoj zvečer ob 9:27 so prišli porotniki v sodno dvorano, resnih obrazov in gledajoč v tla. Pozdrav vsem Slovencem in Hrvatom. Matt Tremac, R. 5., Clark, S. Dakota MUKE NAŠEGA NARODA V PRIMORJU. In to so bile knjige, ki so bile tiskane z dovoljenjem laške vlade same. V Trstu so nedavno tega sežgali) 3000 slovenskih knjig, in sicer pred spomenikom Verdi-ja! Učitelji v šolah z največjp slastjo prižigajo ogenj s slovenskimi knjigami, in slovenski otroci morajo to gledati. iS * >f! To so ga "kampeljni." Here is a quintet that represents the league's maximum offensive and defensive strength; a truly powerful combination. CENTER TOUGH ONE TO PICK This correspondent, in making his selections, struck a snag at the very outstart. We began with the center post and ran into a flock of grief. In looking for someone to fill the tip-off position, three individuals were outstanding: Doljack of St. Ann's, Malovrh of the Flashes and Knaus of the Sokols. Here were three young ladies who were the backbone of J their respective team's play. Offensively, Knaus and Doljack had it on the Flashes' jumper. Defensively, Malovrh was the outstanding player in the league, as anyone pitted against her can testify. That evened matters up, so who was going to get the position? We finally decided in favor of the St. Ann's entry. She had a shade on the others when it came to handling the ball, dribbling and was a surer bet to get the tip-off. So "Whitey" got the key position. A GUARD AND FORWARD But what to do with Knaus and Malovrh? Dear Pagers: Lest, perchance, some of you should picture yours truly as a dashing rider on a spirited broncho, I tender this information: We do not live on a ranch. The average farm In this part of the country ranges from a quarter cection to half a section and curs is less than that. Of late here, as elsewhere, the one-crop farms have given way to diversified farming and dairying or a "little of everything." As for riding horseback, well—Dad bought a horse at an auction once that was said to be a saddle pony as well as a work horse. Accordingly we "the younger generation," acquired a new hobby. We had no saddle but brother Jack said that wasn't exactly necessary. Even I managed to get atop that pony (don't ask me how) and away we went, "Raggedy" and I, at a gait as sprightly as that of the nag that hauls the express wagon! I might have tried again after the stiffness resulting from that first jaunt wore off, if "Raggedy" hadn't decided it was time for a showdown. Jack, the most venturesome of us as well as the ablest rider used to trot to the village for the daily mail. "Raggedy" seemed to enjoy it too and someone told Jack how thrilled the maids along the way were at sight of the equestrian. (He was seventeen then.) A dozen times or so, he made the trip and it must have been the thirteenth time that "Raggedy," with little ado, threw Jack unceremoniously into the one and only mud puddle our main street afforded. Here's how Jack put it: "There wasn't a soul around before, but before I could pick myself up, I guess the whole Young Ladies Sodality was there to take it in, and if that darn horse had the sense to run away or show a little spirit, but he stood right there as if he dared me to .mount him again!" Well, he did mount him again and l*>rse and rider seemed on the best of terms until almost back home when "Raggedy" repeated the trick. This time Dad was a witness and horse stunts of any and all descriptions were banned at "One Pine." Since then we do our horseback, riding at the county fair—on the merry-go round. Believe it or not, Western Farmerette. Overproduction Is Cause Staff Question Man Steps Out of Sphere to Get Answers to Weekly Question The Orels' day of days has again rolled around! Every year that organization sponsors dances, plays, «ard parties, picnics and outings, but the affair for which every member works the hardest is the big annual gym exhibition staged every March, and tomorrow, March 23, is that day! The performance will get under way at 8 sharp at the Slovenian National Home, St. Clair Ave., and before the final curtain falls some 215 members will have displayed their wares. John Susnik is the captain with Joe Sterk, Joe Lusin, Fred Marinko and Frank Brancelj helping him in the men and boys classes. Jean Gla-vich captains the girl teams with Jean Zakrajsek, Frances Kasunic and Julia Lusin assisting her. For the feature performance the Orels will present a decided novelty, a drill with illuminated Indian clubs. This will be the first time that any. such thing has been offered by any Slovenian organization, and should prove quite an attraction. Other features of note, scheduled for the performance, arc the veil dances, the flag and apparatus drills and the tumblers. Those still having unreserved scats are requested to exchange them immediately for reserved seats, for they are going fast and a complete sellout is very probable. Tickets can be exchanged and bought at Kushlan's Kandy Kitchen in the Slovenian National Home building. -0- Comrades Go Into Tie for Third Climb as Collinwood Boosters Lose Three; Leaders Same SOKOLS MEET FLASHES FOR CHAMP GROWN First Game of Titular Series in Intqr-Frat League Thursday Night MEN'S SUITS expertly cleaned and pressed — g Q q ' If we call and deliver, ad 20c THE FRANK MERVAR CO. These matches moved the Comrades into a tie with the Boosters for the third rung in the league ladder. That represents all the changing that was done during the week, and the two leaders, the Clairwoods and the Spartans still are battling it out with the tape just in the offing. The Clairwoods clung tenaciously to their meager one-game hold on the top rung by nosing out the Progressives in three tilts, while the Spartans were drubbing the Betsy Ross Flagmakers. Tomorrow's matches at Del Young's alleys should be much more interesting ,and may bring about a change in the top positions. The Clairwoods will find the going much tougher than it was last week for they will be matching spares and strikes with the dangerous Loyalites. ;The Spartans are liable to run into trouble, too, for they have drawn the fighting Comrades for their opponents, and anything is liable to happen. The Boosters alone stand a chance of making up lost ground as they should have easy picking against the Progressives. By O. I. I think the leal cause is overproduction; manufacturers producing more than consumers can consume, with the result that the goods are not in demand." Editorial from last week's Pittsburgh Press: "Too many married women employed in our industries, tend to take the place of able bodied men. That we honestly believe is one of the causes of the present unemployment situation." And by way of diversion, next week's question is going to be for the young ladies exclusively, "What is your ideal type of a man?" That should b'e a real one and we bet we get some swell replies. Coach Dehler's crew on the other hand are out for revenge and are figuring on staging a big upset. The Sokols made it easy for the Flashes to enter the finals by calling a halt to the St. Ann's great, second half, win streak by copping an overtime tilt 12 to 11 in a, great game Wednesday night. Had the St. Ann's finished ahoad the Flashes would have been obliged to play the SDZ entrants in a playoff. This game, the last of the regular season was the best of the year, with both teams turning in creditable performances. In the other league games the Comrades took the head of the second division by trimming the Spartans 14 to 5, while the Flashes registered a 25 to 3 victory over the George Washington team. -o- Skully Wins Golden Gloves Crown By CINDERELLA JANE The fresh briny sea; the dashing and beating of virulent and foamy waves on weathered rocks; the dreamy ripple of a peaceful brook; vast areas of burning desert sands underneath the canopy of a carmine, indigo, violet and amber sky; stately swaying palm trees; an enchanting, moonlight; an exhilarating sunset: mounds of virgin snow on peaked mountain tops; the charm of # the dusky, narrow streets Of Cairo; the captivating grandeur of Monterey; the heaven-bent sky-scrapers of the great metropolis or—Oh! what's the use. We poor writers can Only paint the words. The artist paints the reality. In this case the artist is Božidar Jakac. An artist, indeed an artist is he, who lives his life in his pictures, and thru them, imparts to us the very happiness and sorrow of his hgart. If you met and spoke to Jakac you will understand how he enfolds his moods in to his creations. Pictures Reflect Mood. Couln't you see him happy and gay in his colorful sunsets and beautiful landscapes. And didn't you feel his gloom, maybe loneliness, in those still water scenes of the mighty green sea, or the placid lake. Did you not imagine that it was the artist himself, who was seated on that baren shore, looking over the serene water, instead of that young woman, in one of his pictures. She looked so sad, yes, you might say forsaken. Did the artist feel the same way at the time (Continued on page 4) aiy'color blind* With Fran *--,-* The Comrades, in their first theatrical attempt at the Slovenian National Home Sunday, drew quite an encouraging audience. The curtain rose at 8 and the crowd immediately took to (Maria) Mildred Tomsic, a maid, who livened the evening with her "free speech." If you took notice, you will remember her peculiar walk. It in itself was an art. The gesticulating Mr. John Alich undoubtedly takes the honor for the most natural ability. Interior decorating was his occupation, but the task of harmonizing proved too much for him. Billy Skully put his name alongside of the Slovenian fistic greats, Frankie and Eddie Simms, by beating Chuck McCarthy in three rounds in the finals of the Golden Gloves Tourney at the Cleveland Public Hall, Tursday night. In winning the Golden Gloves 160-pound championship, Billy attained the goal of every state and local amateur. The neighborhood mitt slinger encountered less trouble in chalking up the final win than what he did in the previous heats. Billy got off to a bad start when the O'Connell A. C. entrant dropped him' for a one count at the very outset, but he came back l&ter in the chapter to plant Chuck on the canvas for a total of nine with a mess of rights and lefts. The second round saw the portly Chuck repeating his elevator performance, going down for a pair of nines. These canvas trips likewise being inspired by messes of rights and lefts. Another right in the third and la'st stanza finished Mr. Mo Carthy's performance and gave the Slovenian the coveted crown. -O- Miss Ann Erbeznik entertained a| group of her friends with an informal party at her home, 875 E. 154th St..! last Sunday evening, a very enjoy able time was hud by all. These others were there of their own free will and accord, while I was the one getting the assignment to "cover" the show. Sort of made me the •'■poor workin' gal." Between the acts, the Sovereign orchestra with an occasional "Lena" kept the crowd in high spirits. Due to unforseen circumstances, there was no dancing at; anticipated, but we were doubly repaid when wn were permitted to see Mr. Jakac's art display by simply presenting the stub. 4 Managed to worm my way backstage after the performance (Continued on page 4) . Hear ye! Hear ye! Hear ye all; country-bred exiles in noisy, sooty cities! Once again the season is at hand when thoughts return to the simplicities of earth, everlastingly sweet. To friendly woods where sap is flowing and giant limbs are relaxing from winter's tension with faint mysterious creakings. To the brooding fields, drying in white patches under the sun. To marshy meadows, exhaling a delicate odor of pale green shoots springing through a matted gray blanket now no longer needed. For each one of us who have known the simple life there is a picture of the old homestead with all its familiar nooks and corners, its crudities softened by time, all of it enriched and endeared by memories of leisurely childhood days. It is still a true picture, essentially unchanged, preserved from the corrosion of the swift mad rush of the modern city. There is the farmhouse, old and comfortable and hospitable, with its plume of smoke curling lazily from its chimney—the clean, pungent blue smoke of wood fire. There are the big, friendly barns and in the yard the faithful work-horses dozing in the sun; a playful colt or two; new calves frisking foolishly about for pure joy of living. Chickens scratching happily for dormant grubs, singing the while in a curious monotone. On the sunny side of a dwindling straw-stack there is a liter of suckling pigs, piled in a row like buns, and a mother-pig all grunts and solicitude. We are accustomed to think of life in the cities as being far more alert, more exciting and more worth while because there is "something doing" all the time. Surrounded on all sides by an effect of motion and rapid progress, we feel the exhilaration of going somewhere at a tremendous rate of speed. A squirrel in its revolving cage is doubtless obsessed with the same delusion. We forget that the speed and bustle and hurry all about us is for the most part merely the restless milling around of the herd and the net achievement little more than a cloud of dust. in the midst of the clatter of a million tongues, our over-tensed nerves twanging from the useless impact of a million sensations, we become confused and forget just where we wanted to go. So we go nowhere in particular in a great hurry in order to be there in time to start back again. We have not the time for a friendly word with the neighbor we meet on the way. He is in a hurry too. Probably started late or is trying to make two round trips. Our lives have become extremely complicated, greatly due to the care and upkeep of the many conveniences we have invented and made for ourselves in order to make living easier and simpler. The result of too much complexity, too many mechanical aids to living, too much standardization of environment is atrophy of the mind; atrophy caused by disuse. Your city-bred child is being guarded and marshaled on his way to school by a policeman while his country cousin absorbs by intimate contact the rich lore of field and wood and weather. The one Is nclsy in the midst of senseless clamor; the other is silent because he is permitted to think. At least it looks that way for American Iiome Junior's correspondence is on an upward swing. Space prevents us from printing all of the letters received, but here are a few of them, March 17. 1930 Dear Editor: I read an article in your paper a few weeks a!go, which stated that members joining an S. D. Z. lodge after March 10th will not he allowed to play ball in the S. D. Z. league. I wish that the originator of this idea would have counted to ten before putting it into print. By living up to this, lodges entering teams 1'or the first time are at a big disadvantage against teams that have been organized for the last two or three years. Maybe something can be done about it, what do you think? Very truly yours, PRANK OBLAK. That's a little bit out of our line, Prank, but we called the matter to the attention of Mr. Frank M. Jaksic, SDZ sports commissioner, who says that enough time was given all the organizations to load up on players before March 10, and that this measure was introduced to prevent the last minute signing up of members for just the baseball , season, and what's fair for one is fair for all. So apparently that settles that. Looks like you'll have to win the championship with just the material you've got, Frank. MORE ABOUT ADS To advertise or not to advertise, that is the question. ("With apologies to Shakespeare), Here we have another letter from a young lady who announces jjer platform for bigger and better reading material and less ads. Euclid, O., March 20, 1930. Dear Editor: After being silent for some time, it seems as if I am compelled to make myself heard again. I wish to second Miss Emma Kresse in her motion to do away with the ads. I am sure that ail our young Slovenians eagerly-await the arrival of the page, with the hopes of finding something very interesting, but to their sad surprise, they find ads. Ray, couldn't we have an English page all to ourselves without any ads at all? I'll admit ads are alright but not on this page. Cinderella Jane is a great improvement to the page—very glad she is back. I am asking Western Farmerette to make herself better known. As ever ALBINA GABRENYA. Well it looks as if our readers are up in arms against the advertisements. Personally we regard the ads as a stepping stone to two pages, which is our ultimate goal. What do the rest of you readers think about it? Let's make our slogan, "Two pages or no ads" and perhaps if we hear from enough readers we can get those up above to give us two sheets. LET'S HEAR FROM YOU! -O- Miss Mary Kasuta, Chataqua Ave., will be hostess to the Laff-O-Lot Club at her home Friday . evening, March 21. BOŽIDAR JAKAC Continued from Page 3 of the painting? He must have, for he says, that he paints just as he feels. And did you note that one scene in which a Mexican, in his sombrero and shawl, is reclining on aA hillside, gazing at the cloisterede waifs of a monastery below him. It's a strange picture. It made you think so many things. But maybe that's just what the artist wanted you to do. Romantic Perhaps the most romantic of all the pictures on display at the exhibit, was that of a rocky beach on which two graceful, tropical, eucalyptus trees were bending over a silver lake, against the background of a clear, midnight blue, sky. Was the artist romantic? He must have been to paint that scene, but he wasn't conscious of it. Jakac is a versatile painter. However, there is one thing that he does npt paint and that is flowers. Upon questioning him in this respect, he replied, "Yes it is true I do not paint flowers, but, that's because I regard every woman as a flower.- I don't know women! I never had much to do with them. When I learn more about them I shall paint flowers." The answer was somewhat bewildering, and you might say flattering. Pleasing Personality Some people invite a friendship and so does Jakac. He has a pleasing personality. He smiles easily, he laughs easily, he can even tell a joke easily. But he does, grow serious when he recounts some of the hardships he endured in his strife for art's sake. However, the artist thinks his life is very interesting, for he says, a knock here and a care and worry there, help to break the monotony of a continual happiness. Travel A Teacher Although the artist has received his schooling in the best educational centers of Jugoslavia and Germany, he says that his greatest teachers are the world and travel. Following his exhibit in Cleveland he will visit Washington where he will make a portrait of Congressman Mooney and perhaps President Hoover. From there he will proceed to J&pan and then to the South Sea Islands. In speaking of our native American art, Jakac stated that our artists lack the originality and impressive-ness 9f the European artist. He says even though we have much better means, wc don't take the time to develop individuality, because we are. too interested in * the" making of the dollar sign. Well, maybe Jakac is right. . SDZ INDOOR LEAGUE By E. M. JAKSIC SDZ Sports Commissioner Well, what's the news in our SDZ indoor proposition? That's being asked of me almost every day. Now then that's my-question. An item appeared in the Feb. 15 edition of the American Home Junior (a part of our SDZ organ, Ameriška Domovina) regarding our expected activities. We requested at that time that societies expecting' to place teams should report to me. And what a result! Nothing but questions! Boys, questions will net play ball; it takes, regular boys to do that. The Indians and the rest of the big leaguers are now in the south getting all set for the 1930 season. There is no reason why we don't get started. If we wait too long I'll be getting worried about suitable playgrounds. You can lighten my burden by letting me know if you want an indoor SDZ league. If you do, don't wait for the other teams to report, but get busy and enter your own team and if you all do that I can proceed, get the grounds, call a meeting and get everything else out of the way so that we can get an early start for a successful league. Now it's up to you. If I hear from you by April 10, I'll do my part. If I don't get enough teams in by then, well, we won't have a league that's all! ALL-INTER-FRAT TEAM (Continued from pake 3) sibly be left out of the picture. Their work all season was far too good and far too outstanding for them to be passed up. Knaus, the Sokol's leading point scorer could very easily be converted into a forward. She has a wonderful sense of team play, is fast and a good shot. So one of the forward jobs goes to the Sokol ace. As for Malovrh, her great defensive play makes her an unanimous choice for a guard position. What the Flash player lacks offensively, she more than makes up in her fast floor game and passing. Malovrh makes an excellent "feeder" and would be a perfect offense starter. , An ideal guard if there ever was one. OTHER FORWARD With 'these three already placed, there remained but one forward and one guard post to be filled. For the forward position, three receive nomination, Laurich of the Flashes, Slap-er of the Sokols and Klopec of St. Ann's. There was no trouble picking this one. Laurich lead the league in scoring and was by far the most feared played in the league.* In most games, opposing teams sent two players out to cover the Flashes' luminary, but they failed to stop her. Laurich w&B a master' in the art of losing her guard and this coupled with her shooting eye made her the league's outstanding player. GASPAREC IS OTHER GUARD And now all we needed to round out the All-Inter-Frat team was another good guard. Trouble picking her? None at all. Ann Gasparec of the Sokols was heads and shoulders a'oove the rest, and the only one who had anything of a look in was Klopec. who can be used as either a guard or a forward. However, Klopec thinks along offensive lines only and has a tendency to let her opponent s;et away for baskets and points. Gasparec, on the other hand, is hard to beat when it Comes to keeping anybody covered, witness the Sokol-Flashcs game, in which she came the closest anyone ever did to stopping Laurich cold, holding the Flash charp-shooter to, six points. She does net receive her nomination on the strength of that game alone, but on her work all year, which was just about, on a par with this one instance. AND THERE YOU ARE And roll them all together, and what have you got? One whale of a cage club! Think of that team going down the floor on the offense! Malovrh to Doljack, on a pivot play, to Knaus coming around, to Laurich, breaking for the basket, with Doljack, Knaus, Malovrh, three centers following in! Boy, whatta combination! Powerful? And hqw! Picture that live dropping back on the defense. Doljack and Malovrh stopping all off-center pivot plays. Gasparec taking charge of all "sleepers" with Knaus and Laurich breaking up the plays before they get under way and making their opponents choc t from the other side of the center. Not very tough to get around! No, not very—just more! ALTERNATES And now that we've got that first five all straightened out, we need at least two more players for alternates, and there is no trouble making those selections, the palm going to Slaper and Klopec. These two can be rushed into any breech that may occur and can be counted on to come through. -o- FREE SPEECH (Continued from page 3) live to enjoy sweeter music. And who can forget the thrill of watching a lark mounting heavenward with long surging sweeps as it pours out its heart, until from sheer exhaustion it drops with folded wings like a plummet out of the sky? Perhaps the day will come when the means of communication and transportation shall have become so perfect that it will no longer be necessary for anyone to live in a large city, even if he has to work there. It is not an impossible dream. And thus through the complexity of our striving for ease we may arrive again at the simplicity of our first beginning. AT "COLOR BLIND" -o- (Continued from page 3) and was surprised to find that Mr. Ralph Danilo, radio announcer, was the makeup man for the Comrades. Na policiji so ga poslušali, kar jim je imel povedati, naredili so svoje beležke ter mu naročili, naj se po- rades organization was reflected in the attending crowd; members of every organization in the community being there.
