Sem spada verski pouk, moralnonravni pouk, delitev zakramentov, služba božja, verska vzgoja katoliške mladine, strogo verske organizacije in podobno. A member The Wage-Hour Problem The status of (proposed changes in the wage-hour law is uncertain. There is a wide difference of opinion ip Congress both as to the figure at which the minimum wage should be set; and also on other very important provisions of the legislation. The "retail exemption” falls into thin second category. It has existed ever since the first fair labor standards act was passed. What it does is to give retailing certain exemptions frtjjm regulations which apply to business as a whole, ^nd this is not, as might appear on first glance, an example of favoritism to on$ enterprise at the expense of others. It is based on the fact that retailing is a special kind of business-with special problems. For example, stores cannot generally operate on a 40-hour week. This is especially true in the 8maller towns, where farmers and others must do their shopping on week-ends and in the evening. If stores were forced to pay overtime after 40 hours, the burden would be a serious one, and it would reflect in higher prices. More important still, retailing offers unusual opportunity to part-time and unskilled workers. It gives young people and housewives a chance, to earn a little money on the side. It gives others a chance to learn a skill and to increase their earning power. However, if the storekeepers were forced by law to pay a high minimum wage for the services of this kind of worker, he would cut out as many jobs as possible. Marginal workers simply wouldn’t earn their keep. And so the opportunity to get the experience they need, by starting in at the bottom, would be denied them. A sound wage-hour law is a difficult and complex matter. A bad law would hurt those it is designed to aid. of the service of the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard and who have served or are serving, in a duly recognized campaign of war of the United States, and who possess an honozaige discharge or who are ellgibtle for ap honorable discharge. They have worked out this special "laugh table” for reference: Ha-ha (“a” as in hat)—cranky perhaps vicious nature. Ha-ha (a’ as in bah)—normal person's laugh. Haw-Haw—vacant mind. Hce-hee—effeminate nature. Hi-hi CT as in high)—dis^re of laughter and wish to 'avoid it. He-he (short vowel as in bed) — sarcastic .nature. Hu-hu (“u” as in huge)—conventional, insincere laugh. Hu-hu (“u" as in hut) — a genuine chuckle. Boiled down there are roughly four ways of laughing. You cap laugh at others: you can laugh at yourself; you can laugh as an involuntary reaction to a pleasant stimulus (tickling): or you can just laugh. Old Glory-With Wing. This is expensive for the farmer’s pocket-book and bad for his blood pressure. The Rural Electrification Administra- forward that the agency now asks Congress to prbvide telephones for farmers everywhere in the country. Farmers are notably tolerant, patient, understanding people. Probably farmers are the only class of Americans who would have put up for so long without telephone service, which city folk take for granted. More farm youngsters, upon completing their education, may agree with their parents that it i3 a good idea to come back to the farm if they have the added convenience cf good telephone service. LOYALTY When the Judith Coplcn or Alger Hiss criminal trials are discussed it would be well to bear in mind that more than two million Government workers have been thoroughly checked for loyalty and approved as being completely loyal. It is of interest tc know that of more than two million Federal employees, there are very few indeed who aie disloyal. As for Judith Cop-Ion, it would be an excellent idea, after she has served her term of imprisonment, if she would be shipped abroad and never again permitted to enter the United states. i TRIAL RUN The aim of backers of the Bran-nan Plan is not only to preserve the income of the farmer and thereby maintain our present standard cf living, but proponents say they will not be satisfied till there is a lefrlgerator,, electric stove, bath tub and telephone in every farm home. They say we must never again return to conditions cf 1932 when cribs were filled with corn which could not be |jld, when hogs were fat and people lean, when pork was selling for two cents a pound and com for thirty-two cents a bushel. In those unhappy days, farmers were not making enough money to pay interest on their mortgages and to pey their taxes. Hie Administration agriculture bill, providing fer a “trial run” upon three basic commodities to be selected by the Secretary of Agriculture, is being actively backed by Administration leaders for passage during the present session If the Adminstration Farm Bill is enacted into law during this • session of Congress, Secretary Bran-nan will undoubtedly select potatoes, eggs and wool for the “trial run.” Farmers like high prices for their products. At the same time, they do not like strict regulation. IT long last we have begun to * recognize our responsibility to the Indians of the United States. The House has passed S. 1407, a bill authorizing $78,670.000 for a Navajo-Hopi Long Range Rehabilitation Program. The amount is insufficient for the purpose, but it can accomplish much. The $25,000,000 over a ten year period authorized for education cannot possibly give schooling to more than one-half of the children, nor can work be found for all the members of the tribes. Many will have to leave the reservation and take their competitive places outside as full and responsible citizens unfortunately without adequate preparation which future Indian citizens will have.
