V Atlanti, Ga., so vojaki a-retirali čez 200 piketov in jih "internirali" v veliki stokadi, o-grajeni z bodečo žico. In to prej ko bom jaz kaj preklical. V nekaterih slučajih pride do popolnega okreva nja. Paralizirani Živci so mehki in hitro hujšajo in to hujfcanje rapidno napreduje. V dobi pur mesecev slede razne pohabljeno-sti zaradi skrčenja. To si» mora |>o-navljati vsak druiii dan enkrat in skozi več menecev. The natural result was, when the depresnion clouds did mar the view of the future, that thousands of workers were left totally unprotected fraternally and economically. On the other hand, the depression found thousand« of workers whose only resources lay in their fraternal insurance policies. Federations' annual picnic at Moon Run drew the response and attendance of practically every lodge in Wee tern Prima. The affair can be chalked up a« another successful chapter In the Kfe of the Federation. It was the response given by the associate lodges that was largely responsible for the success enjoyed. This same response can be accredited to the interest shown in Federation activities by the individual lodges. The crowd that was present in the afternoon enjoyed the sports' program. In the evening attention was centered on the dance floor. Through* out the day it was a jovial, happy crowd that crammed the most of a pleasant day ere hours fleeted into the night, ere farewells of until again were exchanged. The next Federation conference is scheduled to be held in the Slovene Home at Strabanc, Pa., on Oct. 21. This conference will be the last regular session of 1934. There are quite a few topics to be discussed, which means that every one of the 16 associate lodges is urged to be represented without fail. Topics for discussion (incidentally, lodges take notice in order to have your delegates prepared) will include: 1.) The Nov. 10 Victory Banquet already approved at the July conference. The banquet is the last of a program of three affairs in commemoration of the SNPJ'» 30th anniversary sponsored by the Federation. The Executive Board Is expected to have a detailed report to submit. Each of the lodges will be expected to contribute their support to the successful planning and termination of the banquet. 2.) The athletic board was instructed to be prepared to present further reports on the motion, favorably considered last July, that the Federation sponsor another bowling tournament. A final decision of this matter will be given at this Session. 3.) Final disposition of the postponed presentation of m u s h b a 11 awards to winners in the Federation league this summer. 4.) A report from each of the lodges as to the progress being made in each local in the membership cam. paign for the last six months will be appropriate as well as a stimulating fee tor in "full steam ahead" for the last three months of this anniversary year. Oh, yes, we know some of our pals say we're up in the air most of the time, but this time it's resl, we're traveling in the air,—enjoying the clear skies, sailing through fleecy clouds and enjoying the beautiful mountains. But, oh dear, the motor starts sputtering, we've got to land. Dot: "I wonder where we are, what's the name of this berg?" Marian: "I don't know, it's a pretty little town, or is it? Remember the officers are doing all they can to make the meetings pleasant for you, but like a business customer« you are the ones who have to take it, so if you have any helpful suggestions do not hesitate to tell them to any of the officers, and in that way we will soon roll the perfect acore—a 100% meeting attendance. A total of eighty, nine delegates attended from the different branches and th« lodges affiliated with Educational Bureau. Of this number fourteen represented the "youth element" from four states— Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Saturday's session was opened by the Federation's secretary, comrade Charles Pogorelec, when the credential committee was elected. The welcome address was fiven by Comrade Joseph Jauch. The first day, a large part of the agenda was taken care of, namely: Comrade Pogorelec's inspiring report of the Federation's actfel-ities since the last convention; comrade Frank Cesen's report on the continuation of the JSF, as is; comrades Sular and Terchel told us of the work of the JSF thru the Educational Bureau. Comrade Jauch told us of Cleveland's activities of both the young and old; the report of the national Socialist Party convention was given after which comrade Garden gave a report on the "New Declaration of Principles." Comrade Novak of Milwaukee reported on the Socialist movement at Milwaukee, giving us an idea of how the old «political parties are trying bard to discredit the workers, but are unable to do so. Our publications, ie. the Proletarec, Family Almanac and May Herald, received due recognition here, tQO. The circulations in all three have increased, in some instances doubled; such reports were made by Pogorelec and Zaitz in Slovene, and for the benefit of the Youth, Comrade John Rak reported In English. Our agitators, Naca Zlember-ger and Joseph Snoy gave us some interesting reports, and especially Snoy, who told us of his successful agitational tours, how he talks to the people, and his ways and means to get so many subscribers for Proletarec. Saturday's session ttok up the reports of Socialist movement amongst the Serbs and (Croats, by comrades Pete Kokotovich and George Maslach. The work of the Educational Bureau was well stressed; reports on Its work the past two years were submitted by Charles Pogorelec and Johnnie Rak; Comrades Molek and Owen reported on our cultural activities and a critical review of our comrades and sympathizers at fraternal lodges respectively. Sunday's session took in Alesh'a critical outlook on the question whether the activeness of our comrades in outside organizations help us any. Next came the big question which had been on the youth's minds a great deal—our YOUTH. Reports ware given by Comrades Donald J. Lotrich, Josephine Turtt, Ray Travnik, and this writer; a resolution adopted by the youth at a caucus Sunday eve was also read by Comrade Alice Artach, and presented to the resolutions committee. "Socialists and Unions" was discussed by Comrade Frank Podboy. John Gorjanc discussed cooperatives. The women's side of the Socialist movement was presented by Comrades Frances Zakovshek and Angeline Zaitz. A number of resolutions were accepted such as the Tom Mooney, united front, etc. Louis Jartz of Cleveland proposed that a contest be started among the Slovenes for writing plays of merit in English and Slovene which was endorsed by the delegates and which is in the hands of the Executive Committee for furthering the matter. All young and old writers will be invited. Watch the papers for further announcements concerning this proposed contest. Friday evening prior to the convention, the Cleveland Youth undertook plans for a symposium at which the various youth presented different sides of the social problems. Those out-of-town that took part were: Frank Drasler, Stoyan Menton, Ray Travnik, Tony Pirc, Donald J. Lot. rich, and Olga Vehar. Comrade Sophie Turkman acted as chairman nnd showed us her ability in conducting sn orderly meeting. That night we met some of the active Cleveland youth element such as Rose Sumrs da. Turk sisters, Betty Bogs tay. Christine Illcrslch, Olga Vehar, Louis Jartz. Barbie, etc., besides all the delegstes that came that night. Two big entertainments were sponsored by the Clevelanders during our stay; Saturday evening a banquet was held in our honor. Over three hundred attended; a unique part of the waitresses was their costumes; they all wore white uniforms with cut« little red aprons, being especially designed for this occasion. Betty Ro-gaUy gave me hers for a souvenir, and it was the only ihmg I have in the way of a souvenir frWm Cleveland. Short talks were given by many, all sat» being well represented. Solos and duets were presented by Zarja and l>e!avec singing societies. Dancing took up the rest of the eventful evening until time to get some rest.j Sunday evening a concert »aa presented by Cleveland's five Slovene singing societies; musical number»., and speeches by Donald J. Lotrich.' Dullee. and Frank Zaitz. After this program, the youth delegates with others a»aembled for a caucus, which lasted until after midnight. At this Fathering wa drew up the vital Is. sea in trying to expand oar youth into the Fneiallst ranks. After the caucus, we enjoyed some more danc. ing. We can't find words to express the hospitality of our Cleveland comrades; how energetic they were to see that e/erything was just as at home, and better; they really treated us royally. My thanks go to the Turk family for their kind hospitality rendered me during my four days' stay. When you get in touch with such hard workers as the Turks are, then we have reasons to be proud of our movement! And thus, the convention was over. It left us with a new vitality, to get out and expand our ranks. We have a big job on our hands; it will take our Sloven« youth to advance our Socialist ideals. Leaving you for a bigger and better JSF. Fraacea Laagerhok, Lodge 712. Capitalism S hak or As TtiHIe Workers Wage Big Strike The textile industry received Code Number 1 and it came into the world with the blare of trumpet« a little over a year ago. Today the industry is in upheaval with 600,000 workers more or less involved in a strike. When he signed the code, (President Roosevelt declared that the problem of wages and* hours had; been brought to "a definite conclusion." However, grievances have been accumulating since last March. The signing of the code was followed by more intense exploitation of the workers through the "stretch-out" system and textile workers were being resisted in organizing into unions. By June the industry was facing a strike, but this was averted by promise of a government investigation of wages and hours. When the report was made it denied the demand for a wage increase, although in some sections wages were cut under the minimum, being as low as $7.50 per week. In the meantime the union had submitted hundreds of complaints to the Cotton Textile Industrial Relation Board regarding the administration of the code, especially relating to the inhuman "stretch-out" system. The complaints were ignored and the workers concluded that the capitalist-dominated board was a case of dice loaded against them. The theory* of identical interests of capitalist and laborer, that strikes, could not occur under the NRA, then blew up in the strike that is now general in the industry.^ This is the biggest labor upheaval that the industry has ever experienced and it comes at a tin« when the whole industrial system is again shaky with the disease that has been eating out its vitality. The NRA is being reorganized in a frantic effort to get the wheezy old system into working order, but the economic laws of capitalist production remain a puzzle to its managers.
