AMERICAN IN SPIRIT FOREIGN IN LANGUAGE ONLY AMERICAN HOME SLOVENIAN MORNING DAILY NEWSPAPER NO. 191 CLEVELAND, OHIO, THURSDAY MORNTNG, AUGUST 13TH 193G LETO XXXIX. — VOL. XXXIX. Kiefer, centralni direktor Townsend organizacije, in Wm. Dr. Townsend Roosevelta živega ne more videti. — so zamrmrale vse Izgubljene duše. Henry ni vedel, kaj to pomeni. Knock, knock, knock. "Who's there?" — "The Stars.' — "Which Stars?" — "Stars that will twinkle and shine Saturday night at a quarter to nine." By Frank A. Ambrozic This, coming Sunday afternoon, Aug. 16, the Lorain Buckeye Lodge, No. 60 SDZ, will hold its first anniversary picnic at' the Kos' farm on Seneca Rd. We wish to extend our invitation to all our friends in Cleveland Barber- * ton, and Girard to attend oiy: annual affair. We know that you'll not regret attending, for we have quite a varied program. One of the highlights of our program will be drills given by the well known SDZ Honor Guards of Cleveland, under the capable direction of Captain Albina Novak, a softball game between the crack Eastern Stars and the star Lorain Buckeyes will also draw the attention of the younger folks. To top it all we have lined up races which will attract everyone from the very youngest to the very oldest. A ladies' tug-of-war between the "leans" and the "fats" will also draw considerable attention. There also will be free transportation from the Slovenian National Home to the picnic grounds, autos leaving every half hour. A kind invitation is also extended to supreme officers of our Association, and to the officers of the Junior League. So don't fail to stop at the Kos farm on Seneca Rd., Lorain, Ohio this coming Sunday and help the Buckeyes celebrate their first anniversary picnic. You will enjoy being with us. -o- Cleveland Workers' Revue By Tony Brodnik Sunday, August 9 the Cleveland Workers played the Cleveland Slovenes. The Slovenes had reason to remember us, for we beat them last time. But this Sunday the picture was changed. It looked like a walk-away for the Slovenes. Of the Workers' nine players only Stubby Nosse was there, And it looked like a forfeit. The Slovenes were taken by surprise when after a sudden appearance eight players went to their positions. During the game the Cleveland Slovenes still dreamed of a walk - away, but another Worker player came and filled the quota. They were again taken by surprise when Stubby Nosse hit that leather-coated pill three times out of four, two doubles and one single. In the ninth inning the score was 3 to 2 in favor of the Cleveland Slovenes, but in the last half of the ninth the Cleveland Workers made a nice comeback, scoring one run and tying the score. The game went on for 11 innings. At the end of the last Johnny Luzar, who did not have a hit to his record all the game, came up to bat and hit a home run with bases loaded, that won the game for the Cleveland Workers. The final score was Cleve. Workers 7, Cleve. Slovenes 3. Reminder: All players, are to come to a practice to be held Friday, August 14 at Gordon Park at 6:30 p. m. sharp. The Cleveland Workers also won from the NBG Friday, August 7. The score was 9-6. SECRETARIAL CAMPAIGN BULLETIN 250 more new members since May 1st. 16 lodges still not on the go. Six cars will be available to the Junior Leaguers who wish to go. Cars ^vill leave the SDZ Executive Office at 8 p. m. Clairwoods continued their drive for League leadership by winning their fifth game in a row. Their latest victims were the Eastern Stars who were defeated by a score of 12 to 7. By losing this game the Stars were put out of the running for SDZ championship honors. Making only nine hits, the Clairwoods however managed to score 12 runs by bunching their hits with bases on balls and by reason of a few fielding miscues. They got seven runs in the first three innings, then knocked Rudy Lokar out of the box with a four run splurge in the sixth. J. Ka-stelic then relieved Lokar on the mound. LoU Zust, hurling for the Clairwoods, lasted through 9 innings. He limited the Stars to eight, hits and walked eight men, but was stingy when hits meant runs. Frank Zupančič and Vic Opaskar each got two hits for the Clairwoods and for the Stars Larry Kleindienst banged a triple and single. Two-base hits: Hočevar, J. Zupančič, F. Zupančič, Peck Opaskar 2, Yankovich, and Gorjup. Three-base hits: L. Kleindienst. Home run:: J. His full name is William J. Vicic and he was born in Cleveland on March 31, 1916. Njegovo domače ime je "Kročkov Vičič." His first schooling he got at St. Vitus, then at East Madison. He studied at Cleveland Trade School and specialized in machine work. After two years of trade school he went to work for White Motors. Now he is employed at Foot Burte as mach-' ine assembler. We may add that Bill is a strikingly handsome chap, always seen wearing a smile on his bright face. Bill is single, but says he has always had his eye on a certain girl, the unaware object of his affection. For winning the marathon Bill gives most credit to Andy Kocjan who was his coach and trainer. Strict rules, plenty of confidence and his own method of developing stamina brought him victory. Bill never had much of a sports career. The only time he ever engaged in competitive sport was when he entered the SDZ Olympics of 1933. He ran in the one mile event and finished third. He says he will run in the marathon again next year. -—o-- A Woman's View In a 10 inning battle the Cleveland Workers subdued the Cleveland Slovenes by a score of 7 to 3. This game was exciting and thrilling from start to finish. The Workers had only nine men playing, including pilot Stubby Nosse. Heroes in this game were Stubby Nosse, who made three hits and scored two runs, and John Luzar, who walloped a home run with bases populated in the 10th inning, besides pitching a superb game for the Workers. The first three Worker runs were scared on errors. In the sixth inning Ed Cesnik doubled to right and then scored when the fielder let the ball go thru him. In the seventh Nosse made his first double, advanced to third base and then scored when Vidmar threw wild to third base after catching a long fly. The Slovenes, trailing behind 2-0 in the ninth, rallied to score three runs and to lead 3-2. In the last half of the ninth, with one out, Nosse got his second double, stole third and then scored the tying run when Brancelj threw wild to third base. Luzar shut out the Slovenes in their half of the tenth, but Bull Klaus, pitching for the Slovenes, weakened in the 10th by giving two hits and a walk to fill the bases, which then brought up John Luzar who slashed the lusty homer that won him a game. Luzar was in rare form, fanning eight Slovenes and allowing but six hits, while Bull Klaus, who opposed him, gave the Workers 10 hits and struck out eleven. -o- New Committees Named At Junior League Meet Two new committees were named at the Junior League meeting Monday, August 10. These are to plan the future activities of the Junior League. Members on the committee in charge of entertainment are Ulrich Lube, Andy Kocjan, Rose Dusa and Joe Vraneza. The Activities Committee is composed of Larry Kleindienst, Mike Kolar, Tony Piks and Betty Cernelich. -o-- Interlodge League to Have Day at Expo Circle By Rudy Lokar Seven years ago a small group of young Slovenians met at the Slovenian Home on Holmes Ave. to join hands as one to promote fraternal fellowship, to conduct lodge activities their own way (the young people's way) and to do this through the medium of a language they understood. With the help of the senior lodge, Kras, No. 8, they organized July 12, 1929. The beginning was the same as with any other business enterprise, they traveled the good old elevator route, a matter of ups arid downs. This route was sprinkled with sunshine and darkened by clouds; some roads were straight, others were crooked, but just the same they joined hands as one and hurdled all obstacles, large or small. What this group possessed through all this was a little thing called intestinal fortitude. That, my friends, is why this lodge can safely say that it is one of the most successful lodges in Ohio and in the SDZ. Some of the charter members are still with us, others have faded out of the picture; but what they started seven years ago still is being carried on by the four score members, at the present time, working their heads off for their lodge and the SDZ to make the SDZ the best fraternal organization in Ohio, yes, and even in the world. The lodge at present is resting in the social spotlight, known as a group that presents affairs in its own inimitable way, so that everyone attending enjoy themselves. Their predecessors did the same,, and those that worked in previous years shall not be forgotten. That is why this lodge is continuing in memory of its former leaders. This lodge, friends of the SDZ, is the Eastern Stars, No, 51 SDZ. So this Saturday, Aug. 15. the Eastern Stars will celebrate their seventh anniversary with a big barn dance at Manchuta's farm (one mile south of Euclid Ave. on Green Rd.). This is the same place as the scene of the former record-breaking dances held by this lodge. Music will be presented by Frankie Yankovic and his orchestra. Admission will be 25 cents. The barn this year has been remodeled and can accommodate a larger crowd than it did in former times. So now, on behalf of the Eastern Stars, I am appealing to all lodges, clubs and friends to attend this affair anw enjoy themselves under the sky and stars with the Eastern Stars. S. D. Z. NEWS FLASHES By J. M. Vraneza Honor Guards at the Expo When visiting the Great Lakes Expo on Slovenian Day, Aug. 9, whom do you think we met? Why, none other than the SDZ Honor Guards. Who are the Honor Guards, did you say? Well, they are the most popular Slovenian drill team in the city. You should see and hear their drum corps. But just you wait till they get their bugle corps going. Then I believe they will walk away with first place hpnors in the nation. How about it, girls? How are the U. S. soldier boys treating you these days? I am also very glad to report that our wonderful Slovenian Tavern is doing great. Last Sunday they had such a crowd that they were compelled to turn away a great many of its patrons. The well-known Bled Band fr'om Collinwood was one of the big attractions of Slovenian Day. You should have seen them in a parade through the Streets of the World to the International Circle. They were swell, but still a lot of them would like to have seen and heard St. Joseph's Band there, too. There were also other attractions, including St. Mary's Church Choir and Jack Na-gel's popular glee club, Društvo Slovan. They sang songs that you know and like listening to. By Rose Dusa The Olympics have come to an end and what a wonderful day! The sun was a trifle warm, but the crowd was marvelous just the same. What was wrong with the Clairwood girls' baseball team? They challenged the Junior League girl§ for a game and then didn't show up. It was a shame that we couldn't play that game. We'll challenge them anytime and anywhere. Eh, girls? The marathon runners were in good shape, especially the winner. Can those Lorain Buckeyes play baseball? Ask anyone who was at the Olympics. But we'll be out to see the Buckeyes play our team August 16 in Lorain. Everyone come out to see a good game. Too bad the Lorain bus left so early. Anyhow we'll be seeing you soon. The Crusaders have some sprinter in the little girl called Bertha Somrack. She walked off with three or four events. More news will be found on this page about the Olympics, The Interlodge League of Cleveland will have its Interlodge Day in the Streets of the World at the Great Lakes Exposition on Thursday evening, Sept. 3. Basketball teams of the SDZ, which are members of the Interlodge League, are co-operating to make the Interlodge Day a success. Lorain Buckeyes, Clairwoods; Sočas and the Brooklyn Slovenians are members of the basketball division of the Interlodge. Belgium Kiss Dance! Have you ever seen the Belgium Kiss Dance? Well, at the Expo last Sunday we witnessed the goings-on in this ever so popular dance. There are about seven couples in this dance and they go round in a circle (like London bridge is falling down—you know what I mean), with one person in the center and this person picks a partner that he or she would like to dance with and kiss. That part is interesting, but when they pick an outsider it's even more so. The time I'm referring to is when the girls came out and picked on the Modern Crusaders' vice prexy, Adolph Somrack. They got him into the circle and had him pick a girl that he would like to kiss. When he was about to kiss this girl, the rest of the girls were jealous and they all came in and mobbed him, for they, too, wanted to be kissed. While being escorted from the dance floor, Adolph was still unsatisfied with the kisses he had already gotten, so he kissed his escort a few more times. Even the Honor Guards have experienced some of his technique. Vacationing The Misses Mary Pushnik and Helen Nester, both of Homer City, Pa., have been vacationing in Cleveland with your correspondent's family and spent an enjoyable day at the Great Lakes Exposition. Here's hoping they can come again when we have an SDZ affair, where they, can also have a swell time. How many of you Junior Leaguers are going to the Ev-position? As you have probably all heard, the Junior Leaguers and their friends are going down in a body Aug. 24 and just have a wonderful time. Are you going with us? -o- Baseball Schedule August 16 Cleveland Workers vs Modern Crusaders ...........9AM Clairwoods vs Cleveland Slovenes ............... 10.30 ... Eastern Stars — Bye ...
