V zadnjih tednih so gverilci izvedli več uspeŠnih sabotažnih akcij. Velika maša pod milim nebom z mogočnim ljudskim petjem v raznih jezikih, skupna molitev, prejemanje svetih zakramentov in nezadržno navdušenje številne mladine, vse to je v tem planinskem romarskem kraju dalo lep okvir zadnjemu dnevu papeževega obiska v Avstriji. Kronika še poved, da je sv. oče hotel prav tukaj počasitit predvsem 500 semeniščnikov in teologov. V velikem šotoru so skupno s papežem dobili kosilo-enolončnico in v naj lepšem družinskem razpoloženju preživeli več ur. They support a folk-dancing group of 60 youngsters and an annual dinner in the traditional style of Slovenian villagers during the winter besides Slovenian Day in the fall. The members of the United Slovenian Society Band are taking a brief break following a busy summer schedule. Their local community appearances, among others, included the All Nations Festival downtown, St. Vitus Summer Festival, the I jyw* ’ Euclid Park Library Lawn Concert, and of course, the East 185 Old World Festival Parade where they again went home with a trophy. Highlight of the summer season was the cutting of an album, 12 selections, for a Beautiful Day Draws Big Crowd at AMLA Picnic The sun shown brightly as an unexpected large number of over 500 persons showed up Sunday, Oct. 16 at the AMLA Recreation Center in Leroy Township for a picnic sponsored by the St. Clair area AMLA lodges. J Memo From Madeline' ■ bv Madeline Debeveci—- This has been some week, having spent most of it on the phone arguing with the U.S. Post Office. Postal rates are higher than ever and service is slower than in the stage coach era. There is no reason for a newspaper mailed downtown at the Main Post Office at noon Oct. 11 to be received at the 44103 station on E. 55th Street a full week later, but it happens. The downtown post office blames the stations; the stations blame downtown and the mail carriers. Mr. Gerome (443-4130) of the mail processing department said this week that the mails were very heavy with political literature and various flyers. I asked him what rate they pay and he answered bulk rate. Since our newspapers are mailed at a higher rate, I asked him why they don’t take priority over the rest and he couldn’t answer. Instead, he suggested I contact the complaint department. After explaining that I had called that department numerous times already, I suggested that he connect me with the Cleveland Postmaster. He did, but only with a girl in that office who took the facts after much hassling. She also told me to contact the complaint department and said she would get back to me. Mr. Gerome called back and told me that all the mail had been delivered by Monday (six days late). Of course, that still doesn’t explain why our customers in the 44103 area didn’t get their papers until Tuesday. There just has to be tighter control over mail service here in Cleveland. When I asked for a credit or refund since we are paying top rates while delivery is so deficient, I was told we needed to show proof of when subscribers are receiving the paper. Therefore, if you did not receive any recent American Home or fraternal papers, please call our office at 431-0628, leaving your name, address, phone number and name of the paper you never received. We need the documentation to try and solve the postal problems. In addition, if you are not receiving the paper as promptly as you think /you should, call the postal service’s complaint department at 443-4086. If everyone cooperates, we should put enough pressure on the post office and hopefully see some positive results, perhaps even in the form of the kind of prompt delivery service we’re paying for. Thanks for your patience, understanding and help. * * * Lorain Slovenian Home Celebrates 60th Anniversary The Lorain Slovenian National Home is celebrating its 60th anniversary Saturday (Oct. 22) with numerous dignitaries from the Lorain Slovenian Society in attendance. Some time has passed since my last letter and even though I’ve been kept quite busy, it is not a good enough excuse to not keep in touch with those who are so very near to my heart — all my Slovenian friends. I am writing, once again, in the hopes of having you pass along as little or as much of the following through the Ameriška Domovina. It would mean a lot to be able to have all my friends, who I miss so very much, know that I am doing well and in good health. It’s quite difficult to stay in touch with them having the job I have and always being on the move. I would like to be able to share my exciting life with you all and appreciate your allowing me the opportunity to do so. My regrets for not being able to do it more often. Well, let me begin with the big news. Last February I got engaged to be married to the world’s most fantastic and beautiful girl (I may be a little biased). Her name is Stephanie Ann Dorn. She’s from Hopkins, S.C. (a suburb of Columbia). Steph is an air traffic controller at McEntire Air National Guard Base. She previously has controlled aircraft in Europe and in Upper Michigan. She will leave her current work to join me, as my wife, on my next assignment, following our wedding at Columbia, S.C., on Dec. 10. She is the daughter of Lt. Col. and Mrs. Yeadon Delgar Dorn Jr., also from Hopkins. Lt. Col. Dorn is a highly decorated Air Force fighter pilot with massive flying experience, including Viet Nam. His credentials, in my opinion, are why he is the squadron commander of the first and only guard unit (157th Tactical Fighter Squadron) to be flying America’s newest multi-role fighter, the F-16. My parents, as you know, still reside in the Collinwood area of Cleveland on Saranac Road. Dad (Joseph Kokal) is retired and keeps quite busy with his own projects of constant tinkering and renovation. Ma is still very active in church with her singing and keeping a tidy household. Both have taken the opportunity to go out together and travel a little more. As for myself, I am approaching the end of / my assignment here in Europe. Flying fighters in Europe has to be, by far, the most exciting yet demanding mission, especially with the world’s tensions building as they are. I have the chance to fly in every free country in Europe and enjoy the continent’s many varied cultures, food and people. I’ve enjoyed it all — from lying on the beaches on the Mediterranean and skiing the finest resorts in the Alps, to sampling some of the world’s finest Scotch in Scotland. The flying experiences and training I’ve received while here are far more than I thought possible. I have been assigned now to Holloman AFB, New Mexico. There I will be a fighter pilot instructor. My job will be teaching students, who have received fighter assignments, the fighter pilot tactics and discipline of flying before they go on their assigned jets. The teaching will include air-to-air combat (dog fighting), low level flying and navigating, surface attack bombing and straffing, and tactical aerial maneuvering. It is an assignment I feel very proud to qualify for. I will be flying the AT-38B. I plan on arriving in Cleveland around Dec. 1 to visit with my family before going on to South Carolina for my wedding. Then, with my new wife, we will move to Holloman AFB for a Dec. 13 report date. Once again, Madeline, I appreciate your help in allowing me to keep in touch with our Slovenian community. Whenever I get the Domovina, even though it’s usually a month late by the time it gets here, I read it from front to back and feel good about keeping up with all the activities. It also allows me to keep fluent in my Slovenian. Keep up the good work and keep in touch. Pozdrave iž Evrope, 1LT. Andrej Kokal Box 2813 APO N.Y. 09755 * * * On Monday, Oct. 24, “Lou’s Brothers” (pseudo Alpine Sextet) will play at the “House of Swing” (where jazz is king) at Mayfield and Green Road. The group will be featured every Monday thereafter from 9 p.m. to midnight. Followers of the Alpine Sextet are welcome to many fun-filled evenings. MZA Missionary Notes By Joseph Zelle This Sunday, Oct. 23 is designated as Mission Sunday. This World Mission Sunday is sponsored by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the Catholic Church. On this occasion Catholics are asked to be especially generous in their contributions to the missions. MZA is proud to be a part of the missionary work throughout the world. By the collection of postage stamps, coupons, and moneys, many Slovenian missionaries toiling in the far-flung fields are benefited, spreading the word of the Lord. Fantje na Vasi says Thanks On Saturday evening, Oct. 1 we presented our sixth annual Fall Concert at the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair. The Fantje na Vasi from Toronto, Canada, and the Alpine Sextet also performed in various segments of the program. This year, as in five previous, we again had the privilege of performing before a large audience that was both warm and receptive. All the toil and headaches associated with the preparation of a performance are quickly justified when you are fortunate enough to pre- sent that work to a good audience. So, to all of you who shared that evening with us, we extend our deepest thanks and appreciation. We would also like to acknowledge our fellpw performers, the Fantje na Vasi from Toronto, Canada and the Alpine Sextet. Both displayed their usual zest and high quality. Thank you, fellas! Finally, we must not forget the many individuals who have worked unceasingly, year after year, to insure that an enjoyable evening is had by all. It would be appropriate to list them by name, however, they are not the type to seek recognition in any form. Therefore, to our advertisers and writers, cooks and bartenders, hall ushers and ticket sellers, we extend our most sincere awareness and gratitude. Without your devoted efforts, the very continuation of our group would not have been possible. We understand the group from Yugoslavia, Koleda, which performed at the opening of Epcot a year ago will be coming back to the states in 1984. Frank Sterle’s Slovenian Country House on E. 55 Street will sponsor two ensembles from Slovenia — the Štirje Kovači in mid December and Tone Zagar for the New Year. The Avsenik 30th anniversary double album and the new violin LP have finally arrived at the Polka Village. And in answer to many queries, it doesn’t look too hopeful for the Avsenik Ensemble’s ap-perance in the states in 1984. A good bet to see the group might be to join TV’s Jan Jones trip to Yugoslavia in March. Graduated 8 Grades in 2 Years Many times I have wanted to write about this experience. 1 decided to write after reading the article in your paper titled, “Plain Truth, What Teachers Wish Parents Knew About School.” In 1920 I immigrated to the U.S. with my widowed mother and my 16-year-old sister. I was a lad of 14 years. We landed in Cleveland, couldn’t speak English, were penniless and had no job. My mother sent me to her cousin in Upper Michigan, 1200 miles away. He sent me railroad fare of $26.38. To pay it back I worked nine months for nine cents a day and room and board. He refused to send me to school, although I was only 14. After nine months a family friend borrowed me for one month at $30.00 and room and board. After my 30 days were over I was told if I wanted to stay there I would have to go to school. I began with the first graders in a one room school house. The first year I managed to catch up to the sixth grade. Everyone was eager to help me. The teacher came to our house a couple of times each week. During the three months of school vacation, I went to work for Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad for 40 cents an hour. I was happy I c0U* buy some clothes and books. Before school started, ^ landlord (or adopted father) approached me and saiu. “John, you conquered hard part of your schooling and won. Now, if you make the seventh and eighth graje and graduate, I’ll give you a $ gold piece as a graduation pre sent. To make only two grf^ in one year wasn’t too difficU as I handled English fairly we by then. I graduated with a mark. Three other scholars made the grade with lower percentage and our country school superintendent made speech and said to the other three graduates, “Aren’t y° ashamed this immigrant ma the highest score?” teacher gave us a gold P*3 safety razor for a graduah0 present. At school and at home had wonderful discipline an strong will to learn.
