For centuries, property boundaries have been defined by topographically easily identifiable features such as streams, drystone fences, hillsides, paths, or even ruins. Today's cadastral municipality boundaries have taken the boundaries of the former properties and have remained largely unchanged. Perhaps more familiar to historians and archaeologists than to us geodesists is the fact that the boundaries of the cadastral municipality can be in some places linked to Roman remains, some of which were once easily identifiable boundary features in space. The purpose of this paper is not to provide an inventory of all the boundaries of cadastral municipalities that follow Roman remains, but give only a few interesting examples that might encourage someone to undertake more systematic geodetic research on this subject.
