When a spine injury is suspected, the injured person should be rescued using a rescue board. At least two or three rescuers are needed. The important factors include an appropriate approach to the injured person as well as a suitable and correctly performed immobilisation grip. This is followed by accurate positioning of the rescue board beneath the injured person and strapping the person to the board. The rescuers first fasten the straps across the chest, then also across the waist, thighs and feet; the last manoeuvre is to position the neck immobiliser. The injured person is then pulled out of the water, wiped dry and covered with a blanket until medical assistance arrives. The article describes all procedures in detail.
